Tudor Black Bay 58 vs Lorier Neptune

Comparison of sapphire and acrylic reminds of the comparison of digital vs analogue, or transistors vs tubes in the audio world. True that sapphire is more durable, practical, and clear compared to acrylic, just as digital is to vinyl. But there's something endearing about that acrylic dome on the Lorier. That distortion and colour is so good. In the end, it depends on what you want to get out of the watch, and what you're willing to put in to get it. How is the refection of the sapphire vs acrylic? In the video, it looks like the sapphire has just a bit more reflection, but it could be the angles and dial colour.

I can say that the acrylic is way more reflective…but so worth it. Like you said it’s endearing, and I couldn’t agree more.

I agree with you about the acrylic crystal. It feels warm to the touch, and there is something special about it. As far as the reflection, it looks about the same to my eye, but the distortion of the plexiglass kind of makes it hard to tell.

Really appreciate the zoomed out view of the watches on wrist. Everyone else seems to focus closeup and it gives no overall perspective to the sizing.

Thanks for the video. Both are exceptional watches. Yes, the Tudor is built better, but the cost is so far out of most of our grasps. That Lorier is amazing at the price.

I agree with you. The Lorier is a nice watch for the money, put a top hat sapphire crystal on it, and it would be a keeper for me. I also agree with your thought about the Tudor BB58.

As an owner of both watches, I appreciate this Comp. The Neptune is a great piece but no comparison to the BB58. I still enjoy the Neptune very much. Great video

The Tudor has to be a better watch because of its price but I still think the Lorier is great value. I don’t see myself buying a bb58 because it kinda overlaps with the Neptune. I’d rather get the bb41 non diver or the pelagos.

I went with the BB58 over the BB41 as I felt that the BB41 is too big for my wrist due to the larger dial as it does not have a rotating bezel. I really do like both of these watches though.

I have had the Neptune for over a year and I really like it. I sometimes think about upgrading to the BB58 but I’m not sure it’s worth the extra cost, especially for how much I enjoy the Neptune. Great comparison!

Thank you. I think that is always the question regardless of which watch you have. Is it worth it to "upgrade". The answer of course is different for everyone. The Lorier Neptune is a nice watch for the money, I wish I still had mine, but I can't keep them all.

you get far better accuracy, longer power reserve, much better bracelet.. thats pretty much it.. the newer ones have t fit clasp which i love.. not this one. my ranger keeps about +2-3s/week time when worn. The seiko i had, (Lorier uses Seiko movement) was a few minutes off by the end of the week.

Good video and comparison! I recently purchased and am currently wearing the Lorier Neptune Series IV. I have not experienced any Tudor as of yet. However, the Neptune IV, to me, is perfect.

Its funny this past Friday I impulse bought Neptune 3 in Black guilt, but what I really wanted was the new Omega Seamaster 300 Heritage. Since I'm not financially ready to add another several thousand dollar watch to my collection, and was itching for a new watch, this will have to stand in its place till I inevitably get the Seamaster300

Im saving toward the BB54, but I also really like the design of the Lorier. The only think stopping me from buying it instantly, aside from them being located in the US, which would add about 20% import tax to the price (no used ones available on ebay from within europe) is the large crown. It looks a little too clunky to me. Maybe I‘d love it if I see it in person, but that‘s the issue with microbrands. It‘s likely I‘d absolutely love it, but because I‘ve got nowhere to actually look at it in person it‘s still a gamble.

29% import tax is crazy, we do not have a 20% import tax for goods into the USA. I think it is a nice watch for the money, however the 20% import tax would make me reconsider the watch for sure.

Just came from the gram…sorry man I didn’t pay attention and see that you had a channel. I’ve got the regular black bay, not the 58…and the lorier. And I gotta say, I kinda prefer the lorier. The lorier was a touch harder to come by, not in cost obviously but just in availability, so that added to the appeal a touch. And that acrylic crystal….just can’t get enough! The bezel unfortunately isn’t the grippiest, or the best feeling…but hey they can’t all be zingers eh.

Hey, better late then never, LOL. I also really like the look and feel of an acrylic crystal. I have a couple of other watches with an acrylic crystal that are keepers in my collection, I should wear them more often.

Really nice video. I’m also a fan of the no-date watches. A friend gifted me a Neptune v3 and I absolutely love it. I’m wearing it with the dark blue nato strap and will have to try out the bracelet. Hopefully I’ll be able to get a Tudor BB for my next daily watch.

Seeing them side by side is great. The dial on the Neptune looks way better and I also like its slim bezel. I prefer the lugs and crown of the BB. In fact the crown of the Neptune seems strange to me. The bracelet on the BB is way better, but then again it probably costs only slightly less than the entire Lorier.

Thank you, I am glad that the video is helpful. I sold off the Lorier some time ago, but I do think about adding another one to the collection. However, since I own the BB58, I am not sure how much I would wear the Neptune. I think it is a good looking watch, and a good value though.

I wonder if its possible to flip the bracelet of the lorier inside out so the more rounded side is on the outside and the flat side is on the inside? The rounded side of the bracelet just looks better to me.

I don't believe that the links would be able to flex around your wrist that way. The rounded edges are what allows for the bracelet to flex.

You couldn’t flip the bracelet the other way, but the newest Neptune has a different design and they have rounded the edges to the links. I personally don’t like the new one as it’s thinner and doesn’t have the same weight to it.

It’s an interesting comparison, which shouldn’t really stack up. If you have the money for a BB58, you wouldn’t look at a Neptune. As well as the Lorier, I have a 2006 Omega Seamaster Professional. I’m selling the Omega really because the Lorier is so good, and I can’t justify walking round with £2500 on my wrist. I have a test now which is if I lost the watch, or it got stolen, could I go out and get another the next day, financially speaking. If I couldn’t replace it straight away, then it’s too expensive and I shouldn’t be buying it.

That is a good rule to have about your watch, and other purchases that are not totally necessary. I think the Lorier Neptune offers good bang for the buck, however I still prefer the Tudor BB58.

My OG bb58 is my favorite watch. I almost have no faults for it. It’s just awesome all around. It’s also going to age very well imo. That Lorier is sweet as well!

The Tudor looks good on you, money well spent Kevin, sell a few of the ones your not that crazy about and the price comes down on your new purchase. Plus on the Tudor it has the real markers on the dial that seals the deal. Jack

Thanks for the excellent video. Personally, I think the Tudor BB58 is an almost perfect watch (add glidelock to the clasp and it would be perfect). It is in a different class of watches than the Lorier and is arguably the best value in luxury divers, especially with its Rolex connection and in-house movement. I want one! As to the Lorier, the plexiglass is the deal breaker for me. And I would love to see a comparison with the Glycine!

I agree with all of your points again. I would also like it if the BB58 had a matte ceramic bezel insert. Glide lock would be awesome as well. I will make a note to compare it to the Glycine Combat Sub, which funny enough is less expensive then the Neptune.
