That tug doesn't have enough length or HP to manage those barges in those currents----minimal leverage on the barges
@TheMeradАй бұрын
The currents are brutal at that bridge. Any vessel over 40' is very difficult to pass during mid-tides. That barge-tug set up is not something you want there except slack tide.

Some tiny tug boats are more powerful than they appear. Just a wheelhouse and a big engine. No bunks, no galley, no TV lounge, no spa.
@railroad9000Ай бұрын
Appears the pushboat is under powered to handle those barges in that current!
@songbird6362Ай бұрын
Yep ur right too small for that load n current ..

2 Hopper barges and a small pushboat, what were they thinking.... Or not? Well at least the fender system worked.
@bradmagnuson6963Ай бұрын
What direction were they moving?. How fitting: poseidon on the side of the barge

I am a retired locomotive engineer and union officer, and am now a very part-time Paralegal/Investigator still looking at cases where federal transportation issues come into play. My father was Director of Port Facilities for Conrail during the 1980s, and I spent a little time observing his maritime operations while I was in high school, though that hardly makes me any kind of authority; I know the bow from the stern and port from starboard. I have done a lot of investigations into incidents that could potentially result in federal decertification for locomotive engineers.. I have also extensively studied incidents where human-factor inputs might contribute to the incident. This could be one such case. My first question for those in the know is whether that tug had sufficient power to handle those two barges, especially if they were loaded. It looks awfully small, which makes me curious about horsepower/propeller thrust and steering ability in adverse currents. My natural inclination is to advocate for the Master of the vessel first and foremost, and to document as many contributing factors to the incident in hopes of preserving her/his operating credentials.

keep in on land buddy, jk....those little tugs are built for that and the barges are empty as you can see how high in the water they are riding and how little water they are displacing

With all due respect, get a Captain's License before chiming in. That tug is more than powerful enough to handle 2 small scows.

Nothing to see here folks happens all the time Tug can wait for slack tied or just have an other assist boat show up !

What's wrong with the existing bridge? Worked just fine when i crossed it last.
@BoatClubCaretakerАй бұрын
Boring day in NJ it seems. its a non issue..... Soon as the current changes it'll be off the pilings. I would hardly call this "crashes into bridge".
@randyb1890Ай бұрын
It looks to me like they are going to need a large tug boat( or two) to pull that free, or they wait for slack tide if a slack tide occurs at that spot in the river.

Isn't that called a barge, not a tugboat? It's being pushed by a small boat - I'd hesitate to call that a tugboat.
@jerseyshorefireresponseАй бұрын
@@minerran that small boat is called a tug boat. A tugboat or tug is a marine vessel that manoeuvres other vessels by pushing or pulling them, with direct contact or a tow line. The tug is pushing or pulling the barge.
@BoatClubCaretakerАй бұрын
It's a harbor tug, and those are scows (the 2 barges)
