Being Catholic, every Friday was tuna casserole, macaroni and cheese (homemade), fried fish dinner or fish chowder. I rarely eat anything tuna. Can’t believe I ate fish chowder. It was very odd tasting and I was the fussiest eater. I’d never eat it now. Fish, peppercorns, potatoes weird spices, butter and milk or cream, but I think it was milk. I’m sure it had other things in it, but who cares. I actually liked it then. I get chills just thinking about it now. I make a mean tuna salad for a friend when I visit and it’s pretty good. I mix my dressing ingredients separately and then add to the pasta. Much easier. If you put chicken in it and told people it was tuna, they’d taste tuna.

My Aunt Mary used to make the best tuna/macaroni salad. I think it was the love she put into it. She used little shell pasta and diced the onions tiny and would chop up a tomato from her garden. Catherine does this bring back memories. I was a hairdresser for 30 years and my first Boss kept a big bowl of this in the fridge with a big cup to scoop it out. She kept it there to nourish her hairdressers and she made it exactly like you. I love Kraft mayo because of the hint of vinegar that cuts the richness of the mayo. When I use a full 16-ounce box of elbow macaroni, I use 3 cans of Bumblebee chunk light tuna (in water). I also add a tablespoon of dill weed and a generous topping of shredded mild cheddar cheese. A few hours in the fridge to allow all the flavors to meld, and what a delicious dish!! Everyone I’ve served it to has requested the recipe!! Didn’t know that handy little tip about putting the baking soda in the water when boiling eggs-will definitely do that from now on. 🥰 My husband and I love your videos and watch them together!

When my mixing bowl is a little on the small side to mix and stir all my ingredients, I use a one gallon ice cream pail, or even a stock pot, for mixing. Then I transfer everything back into my nice glass salad bowl to chill and serve. It’s an extra pail to wash, but it’s so much easier and faster that it’s well worth it to me. My mother made this with sliced olives with pimento instead of peas (use less salt when seasoning) and she used some smoky paprika on top at the end for a little kick and some pretty color. I've been making it myself now for about 55 years too. Love it. I use tuna in the pouches instead of in the can. Might be my imagination but sometimes canned tuna tastes a bit like metal.

We had a recipe years ago called Tuna Pea Salad. We used a shell shaped macaroni because the shells were perfect to have the peas and other ingredients inside the shells. We had chopped red onion with finely chopped celery with salt and pepper and a good quality mayo. If we used water packed tuna and we used a bit of olive oil to stir through the pasta before adding the mayo. We did not use albacore or white tuna as the chunk light has the darker more flavorful tuna. This salad is better the day after you make it and it has been in the frig overnight. We never used eggs. I always thought this was a southern recipe since almost everyone that tasted it loved it but had never heard of this before. It's really good.

Thats been a favorite of mine since I was little. My grandma got me hooked on it. We'd come from out if town to visit my grandparents & she'd always have this same, big glass serving bowl FULL to the brim with cold tuna noodle salad. She made it very similar to yours, but no pickle relish & lots of eggs cut up in the salad, but the entire top was covered in sliced hard boiled eggs and sprinkled with paprika. She made it the day before we would get there & wouldn't let anybody have any till I got there & had the first plate! (MY poor grandpa❤️) She loved green onions so there was always a lot of those in there and she put really thin slices of radishes cut in half. She never got the peas heated up, just drained a frozen bag in a strainer to get any ice off. Basically just rinsed them to separate them. I do that to this day because they stay nice & firm that way & also seem to help the salad start to chill a little faster. My mom makes it basically the same way still, but has decided she likes seedless red grapes cut in half in hers. I like it that way too, but never think to put it in my own batches somehow. I think I could eat my way thru a big bowl of this stuff every week in the summer! By myself!! 🤣🤣 It's just always been my favorite. I also make the dressing in a separate bowl & mix everything together but the tuna & eggs. Once I have plenty of dressing on the noodles & veggies, I fold in the tuna & eggs so they don't get so broken up by folding it all together. I like them to stay in bigger chunks. But get those sliced eggs on top as a garnish, cover it loosely with plastic wrap & give it a couple hours in the fridge & WATCH OUT! YUMM! 🤣 Thanks for the walk down memory lane!! Miss my grandma every single day & she's been gone since 1985. Nobody spoils ya like grandma, right? 🥰🥰 God bless. 🙏🙏

Great video, easily explained. I’m not a fan of peas, but the rest sounds wonderful. Have you ever made a version with red grapes and toasted pecans? They worked well in a chicken pasta salad that I made recently, so I would mainly be switching out the chicken for tuna. So many options, it’s confusing at times. 😂

Yea! You’re right! I pray that we have more people like you who remember their grandmas. It is a blessing to have them around and get spoiled if they are given the chance to do so, sometimes they are limited and not be able to spoil their grandchildren as much as they would like to. That’s today’s world for us. But I’m sure grandparents will always be remembered when they are gone, sadly it will be too let for them to spoil their grandchildren. Thank you for this recipie and your method for hard boiled eggs... turns out perfect. I only like tuna in macaroni salad... i get the skipjack for low mercury. I don't like peas so I put in sweet pepper. Used only 1/2 lb quinoa pasta to make this gluten free and higher protein., so lowered the mayo (avocado) to 1 cup for the reduced amt of pasta. Turned out great

I'm not sure I've ever had macaroni salad with Tuna.. I'm going to try this one! Might add a little bit of cubed, sharp cheddar. I used to make a macaroni & cheese with tuna and peas for my kids when they were young and they loved it.

Make sure to not use Wisconsin cheese. It ruins this dish. Any other cheese is OK. Illinois Washington or Vermont cheeses are good choices

Me too, though I cooked peas separate because I had some that didn’t like peas. Weird because they both LOVED to eat sugar snap peas right off the plants!!🙄🤣

My son makes this for me. He uses corkscrew macaroni and also puts radishes in it. It's so good.
