I have an M2C DCT too. I'll add this: the DCT does have an automatic-emulating crawl mode: after you put it in drive and release the brake, just touch the accelerator pedal (don't keep it pressed), and the car will start to crawl continuously at a constant low speed. It's useful in flat terrain. I use it when getting out of my parking spot and specially in traffic jams. It's cool to see a video about this transmission, which is quirky but lovely :).
@TunedIntoCars4 жыл бұрын
That's what I said in the video. Tap the accelerator and the car starts moving :)
@mambodiehard4 жыл бұрын
@@TunedIntoCars Right, but since on 3:13 you talked about the "no crawling feature" of the DCT, I think it's better to use the term "crawling" instead of "moving" to avoid installing the idea that the DCT doesn't crawl.
@mambodiehard4 жыл бұрын
BTW, today I tried crawling uphill to see what the DCT would do. Since the hill was very steep and the power applied for crawling wasn’t enough to climb, the DCT just disengaged the clutch and the car started rolling backwards downhill. So, avoiding stall is the imperative for the DCT!
@MrSvolte4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, crawl works poorly when reversing too. My parking spot is tiny, and it's quite a pain to park in a "fine manner" with ~ 10-20 cm margins in the front and rear combined.

As said before this is the only video I've seen talking about the gearbox. Well done on the overview. The M2 Comp is basically a racecar for the public roads and as such the DCT transmission is built to suit race conditions meaning, The gears are not in mesh position preventing the gears from getting heat spots from touching each other while sitting still, this is also why the engine stop button needs to be pressed twice to put the car in park and turn everything off. After the first press you can leave the car (really only while at the track for security) and allow the gearbox to cool before putting into park thus preventing any possible damage to the gear surfaces. I hope I've explained that so people understand (make sense in my head :P) Have a great day peeps ;)

Two presses to turn off is just a curiosity of the cars. It releases the clutches, not gears, after a while of being stopped to prevent wear to the clutches.

I have a 2020 M2C and based on my experience, I will say this is a pretty good explanation of the DCT. I previously owned an E46 M3 6MT, which had an autosolutions 30% reduction shifter and CDV delete. In my opinion, BMW manual transmissions don't shift very well. I don't miss the 6MT at all. DCT is much better and more fun to drive in almost every way. First, it's not humanly possible to shift a manual as fast as DCT, so all things being equal, a car equipped with DCT will accellerate faster than a car equipped with a manual. Second, yoiu can drive without taking your hands off the steering wheel. This is a good thing on the M2C because it's a very tail-happy car. If you are accelerating around a corner and you downshift, the car will immediately oversteer, which is a lot of fun. For a car like this I feel a lot safer not having to take a hand off the steering wheel to shift. I drive my car in sport plus mode and in manual almost all the time. It's a great driving experience and I feel involved as much as if I was physically changing the gear using a manual transmission. The thing I really dislike about the DCT is how it goes into park. There is no park position or button on the shifter. The transmission automatically goes into park when you shut the engine off, which you only can do in drive or reverse. You cannot shut the engine off with the transmission in manual. In fact, the only way you can put the car in manual with the engine off is to lift the car on a hoist and manually move a lever on the transmission. I don't know what the engineers were smoking when they came up with this.
@JohnSmithCars11 ай бұрын
I have an M2 Competition (automatic) and when I first got it, I often had the issue of the car rolling backwards whilst in drive or - in some cases even worse - rolling forwards whilst in reverse. You get into the car, turn it on, you're parked on a decline with you foot on the brake and select reverse to pull out, you release the brake and before you have a chance to accelerate out the car starts to roll forwards... Almost hitting the neighbours car in front. Nightmare. In order to reverse out safely I had to keep my left foot down on the brake whilst squeezing the accelerator, "counting to 2" whilst the car wakes up and releasing the brake only then. Quite dangerous for this to be the required input especially for people buying this type of car for this first time, or from a dealer that is unaware of this consideration when safely pulling out from stationary. The Hill Start Assist seems only to work with reliability when you come to a stop after driving and you're about to set off again. If you reverse however, then put the car back into drive whilst on an incline/decline the Hill Start Assist does "not" work and again, you have to left brake brake whilst applying 1.5 seconds of acceleration, releasing the brake only after 2 seconds before moving off. Having forgotten to do this a number of times I went ahead and developed a solution with code, plugged it into the M2 and now the hill start assist "always" works, whether I'm pulling out of a parking space or driving forwards after a reverse. No more rolling or left foot braking for me. Not sure why they don't set it this way by default.

As it's been noted, there is a crawl function, just tap the accelerator. Comparing to a ZF auto is wrong, because this is a semi-auto. Some complain the car hops at low speed - this is no different to a manual being fed too little or too much power. Best options are to set one of the M steering buttons to comfort/level 1 and the other to full attack. Set off the lights with easy mode and quickly switch to other for no hopping. Lastly, the box doesn't need a P position because like a manual there isn't one. The box will lock once the engine is off.

Yes, i have said in the video that the car starts moving when you tap the accelerator. Also, i wasn't comparing it to the ZF box. I was just pointing out it's not as smooth. I've spoken to a lot of people that expect the DCT to behave like a ZF box in auto mode and that's just not the case.

I think people need to realise that this is a robotised manual gearbox with dual clutch technology. The pro's from torque converter automatic gearboxes (crawling etc) are not really benefits but things we got used to and drive around. The DCT (and DKG from Porsche) are the best boxes around that are as close to manual boxes as you can get. I have 300.000km experience now in M5's, M3's and since a year in a M2comp, the fact that BMW dumped the DCT for a booring TC automatic gearbox really hesitates me going for another ///M in the future, so maybe Porsche it will be :)
@TunedIntoCars4 жыл бұрын
Yup. Although you can still get the new M3/M4 with a manual
@cw205mi1610 ай бұрын
It's not a robotised manual gearbox though, it's a dual clutch gearbox. A robotised manual will always be essentially a single clutch manual gearbox with solenoids working the selectors. BMW just made the DCT to behave in a certain way; it could have creep on brake release (instead of throttle tap) and it could hill hold forever but it releases clutches to save wear. VW's DSG copies traditional auto more closely. Porsche's PDK is the best IMO, no creep and shifts are perfect feeling like a sequential without the unsettling "shove" of BMW's DCT.

Even in sport gearbox mode, it still changes at low revs if you don't apply much throttle, and the more throttle you apply the more it holds on to the revs, much better than this DCT. And now it's been upgraded with XHP3 software, it changes just as fast as the DCT too.
@TunedIntoCars3 жыл бұрын
Much better than the DCT? I really disagree with that statement. Having owned cars with both, if I had the choice, in a sports car, I would take the DCT without looking back. The ZF is quite excellent but at speed, the DCT is just faster. It was especially noticeable when I drove the new M5 and then jumping straight into a DCT car. You can clearly see the differences then.

@@TunedIntoCars The DCT is faster comparing standard cars. Did you miss the part when I wrote mine has upgraded XHP3 software ? It is also much smoother as slower speeds with none of the clunky jerks that the DCT has. So yes, it is better. Maybe that is why BMW now use the ZF8 in modern M cars huh ?

Compare the two transmissions as stock. What's the point otherwise? You can flash the DCT as well and make it even faster. But yes, it is much smoother than the DCT and more efficient. That's why BMW added it to the new M cars. Again, it's a matter of preference, not a fact, as you claim. You really can't go wrong with either
@DjNikGnashers3 жыл бұрын
@@TunedIntoCars Both standard, and I still say the ZF8 is better. It is still extremely fast to change gear in sport+ or TC off modes with the auto in sport box mode. The DCT is literally a few milliseconds quicker to change when both are standard, but is clunky, jerky, and has other annoying flaws like the way if you are on a hill in drive mode, and don't accelerate as soon as you take your foot off the brake, the car rolls backwards. What about the 2 second delay when going from forward to reverse ? I have driven both, I work in the trade too, I know the truth. The ZF8 is better in every way as standard, apart from a few milliseconds slower to change gear than the DCT. XHP3 cures this, and I actually think it's faster to change gear than a DCT when this is done, although we are talking milliseconds so it is hard to measure. So as much as I respect your channel, I stand by my opinion as the truth.
@TunedIntoCars3 жыл бұрын
Every 'flaw' of the DCT is in this video, why bother repeating it? I'm very familiar with then. And that's the whole point of the video. To mention these things for people who are considering buying a DCT BMW. So that they make an informed purchase. What I find surprising is that you're trying to get your opinion across as facts, or truth. It's not, it's just your opinion. Except for the fact that the DCT is faster at speed and the ZF being smoother, more refined and more efficient, everything else we BOTH said is simply an opinion or a preference. And yes, despite everything you've just said, my preference is still the DCT is an M2 Competition. If I had a daily driven BMW, for sure I'd go for the ZF. It's much better in that scenario, while still being quick enough when changing gears manually. But in a sports car, when you're fully on it, those milliseconds make all the difference in the world.
