I was always taught to bring your working yarn forward, in front of the hook, put into the vertical bar in front, then yarn over and pull through and it makes a purl stitch. This is an actual reverse stitch. But it's a nice stitch, none-the-less.

While I am a relatively new crocheter, that is not what I was taught to be a purl in tunisian or regular crochet, but would agree to the term "reverse".
