Should have mentioned the iron block was specifically chosen because after testing the connecting rods for so long, they had no time to test an aluminum block. Also the super stallion would have been a great example of the testing of a supercharged Mustang before the terminator. Important to mention 2002 was not a Cobra year, because the Terminator was taking up all of SVTs time, and 2000 was skipped because they were fixing all of the underpowered 99s.

No both here are wrong. In the book iron fist, lead foot the team specifically chose iron for strength. The then factory produced WAP block was not able to withstand the svt/ford longevity and durability testing which was brutal on a supercharged application. The Rods which svt was forced to outsource to manely was primarily due to ford not having been able to produce a powdered metal rod that could withstand testing mentioned earlier.

i believe it was bcuz Ford has never struggled for car sales so they test their limits with small motors n since the Mustang has always been lighter than it's rivals Ford never felt pressured to use the 5.4L more.. Also Ford loved going low compression which limited hp, 9.4:1 vs ls 10.9:1 is a huge bump..
@JROC734
@JROC734 2 жыл бұрын
LS1 had a 10.25:1 CR. LS6 was a 10.5:1 CR. It's a trip thinking how GM required you to run 91 octane or better in them, and today you've got engines like the EB running the same CR as a LS6 at like 12+ PSI's and it's rated to run on 87 octane. Hell a GEN 5 6.2L runs a 11.5:1 CR and GEN3 Coyote runs a 12:1 CR, and in the F150 it's even rated for 87 octane. Talk about pulling timing. And people wonder why GEN5 6.2L's and GEN3 Coyotes respond so well to E85 tunes. The fact of the matter is 3.552" is just too small of a bore diameter to try and make big N/A power with. I personally feel that a LS1/LS6's 3.898" bore diameter is too small to make for a great N/A, 2V engine. A 4" bore should be the minimum on a 2V engine. A LS2 with a 4" bore for example has noticeably more N/A potential than a GEN3 LS 5.7L engine, as does any 6L LS engine which all use a 4" bore. 6.2L is even better with a 4.065" bore. All these GM engines use the same 3.622" stroke BTW, so their difference in displacement comes from their respective bore diameters. I've always said Ford should make their Boss 6.2L into a DOHC engine. With a 4.03" bore that thing would be a N/A beast. Just look at how potent a GEN3 Coyote is with a 3.66" bore. BTW LS3 had a 10.7:1 CR, and LS7 had an 11:1 CR FWIW.

Well in an era of 275-325hp cars, Ford released a 420 horsepower mustang, rated it at 380hp and its also one of the easiest to modify platforms with massive aftermarket support. But what else were they gonna do when there were cammed LS1 cars breaking into the 10s with only baby shots of nitrous. 2003 was the era where you could still see actual 302 powered foxbodys. GTPs, single cammed civics and turbo AWD cars weren't quite taken seriously enough yet. 400 horsepower was a lot back then and when those things hit the streets it changed the game. I believe they are single handedly responsible for the horsepower wars of the late 2000s that eventually led to things like the C6 ZR1 and the Dodge Demon

I wouldn't say Terminators were so "dominant". I certainly think a C5 Z06 would have something to say about that, with its 3100lb weight and just as easy to modify if not easier. It was no slouch for holding power either, as there are plenty of procharged Z06s on stock bottom ends making reliable power. Again, they don't hafta make as much because of the weight advantage. But yes the Terminator is when any advantage the LS1 had over previous Mustangs disintegrated.

It took me a long time to appreciate the mustang, since it was and still is such a popular car I never really payed any attention to the car, that is until I got one for myself. My 2015 5.0 with the MT82 manual transmission is violent and scary as hell. At over 400+ hp to the crank it’s nothing special but damn is it a riot! But I think the saddest part for dodge owners is the fact that even with my manual Transmission holding the car back there hasn’t been a single stock 392 charger or challenger that could keep up with me in my 5.0. On top of a manual transmission i was also dealing with the coyotes known little misfire problem and was still wreaking dodges and even Camaros (sorry chevy guys, I know how it feels as I too love chevy more then ford). Being lightest out of the 4 cars mustangs are insane muscle cars these days, my s550 is again nothing special but I’ve gotta say I’ve only ever lost to ten speed mustangs, one 2017 mustang gt, and a 2016 Camaro running e85, with an intake, and tune. Givin that information people still don’t believe me when I say my car kept up with that same Camaro pretty damn well. I’d even go so far as to say if I had the same mods my s550 would of taken that 2016 Camaro with ease. My mods consist of cat delete and a tune and with just that I was set at the door of that Camaro and gaining ground even. But honestly I always asked the question of what makes the mustang so damn special. I have definitely figured it out, I’m not a one brand kind of guy, I can appreciate every brand name on the market today because they all have a respectable place in this world. But I’m for sure sold on mustangs, I’m even going to go so far as to build a 5.2L voodoo motor for my s550 5.0 because I just can’t part ways with my car as it’s become a permanent part of my family after proving itself to me as a bitchin car. My 06 Cadillac Escalade with a stage two cam, heads, cat delete, built 4L60e, and street tune will still 60ft my mustang in a drag race though lol 😂

the original cobra 4.6 just needed to have a new intake and some better bottom end (the aluminum couldn't take the heat). It honestly would have been better to beef up the original 5.0 pushrod (the one BEFORE the coyote) that could make some good power when tuned correctly. The 4.6 DOHC ended up being a good option later, and then moving to the 5.4 (triton) supercharged versions that made 300 or more HP standard (lightning/F150 Harley edition). Just like the older cast iron 2JZ and RB's that you could boost to the moon, the aluminum bottom ends from late 90's early 2000's were not as strong as you could make them now.

Also the 4.6 dohc blows away the original 5 liter pushrod even in the original pre terminator spec. All you need is forged rods and pistons to make 700-1000 wheel...that is stock block and forged crank where on an old 5 liter you need forged piston and rods too plus forged crank and an aftermarket engine block over 500+ rwhp. Ford Mustang’s SN95 and New Edge were so legendary that their strong sales Terminated the Chevorlet Camero and Pontiac Firebird. Whilst fighting the Corvette their supercharged engine and strong sales pushed them into the sports car segment because they could not rest on pure engine power alone as a muscle car. Meanwhile, Dodge had to cancel Challenger chassis development just to focus on building a hellcat engine good enough to seal the throne in Horsepower Wars.

Ya agree to disagree. Camaros and TAs were outperforming Mustangs pretty much yearly outside of a few models from '93 till their last year in '02. Despite this, they couldn't outsell Mustangs and they never will. That's because of the Corvette. Think about it, Ford doesn't have another sports car competing against itself for buyers like GM has. And dont say the Ford GT that car is nowhere near affordable like Vettes have been in the past. It was pretty obvious that the Camaro was on the way out long before cars like the Termi or even Mach 1 came around.

The first cobras were heavily overrated on power, like you said. But a missed out detail was how Ford, trying not to make the same mistake, underrated the power output on the Terminator Cobra. Google will tell you it’s 390 crank horsepower. But many sources have said they dyno’d it bone stock when they first came out and the output was somewhere between 410-420 wheel horsepower. The Terminator cobras were heavily underrated from the factory which is why everybody thinks they’re slow.
@midnight347
@midnight347 2 жыл бұрын
They weren't "heavily overrated" they did make under advertised hp tho. It was because of casting issues within the intake manifold and some kind of restriction in the exhaust system. Basically all you gotta do is get your intake ported good and add an aftermarket exhaust which everyone does anyways and it'll make the same with those mods as an 01 would with those mods. They would fix them for you by porting your intake and changing the exhaust out on it. That was called "the fix" it wasn't stuff that couldn't be very easily fixed and it was made much more of a big deal than it should have been. The 03-04 dyno around 360-380 hp putting them solidly in the 430 hp range at the flywheel.

The reason i think that even low boost superchargers add so much power is just that NA has a volumetric efficiency of like 0.6-0.8 at peak power but with forced induction you can increase that to between 1-1.2 with low boost. Its that just the suction from moving the piston isnt enough and pushing the air even slightly into the cyclinder helps a ton with power.
