The Republic established by Ataturk was an ambitious project. In the aftermath of the great leader’s death in 1938, a tricky road lay ahead for Turkey. It had to manage its transition to a multi-party political system. At the same, it had to deal with the fact that the Army viewed itself as the purveyor’s of Ataturk’s vision and thereby would get involved in politics if they saw fit. On top of all this, Turkey had to grapple with social instability caused by socio-political violence between left-wing and right-wing groups.

I personally believe so. Democracy in Türkiye has not produced the best of results. The most democratic and liberal period in its history (1965 - 1980) was the most violent and unstable period. The military had restored order the two times they actually seized power in 1960 and 1980, albeit the latter military leader was far more brutal and heavy handed in that pursuit. One thing that the current President deserves to be commended for, is bringing political stability to the country. Perhaps, he is the only Turkish civilian leader who has brought an end to political instability. Therefore, I believe the military has in general been a positive force - restoring law and order in the country, despite their high-handedness.

Any country that regularly installs new leaders via coups has an unstable political system, where the leader's position is based mainly on force and favouritism. So it probably has not been a good thing for the polity in the long term

@@McVaySwifty To be honest, I have to agree with you. Constant coups is detrimental to a coup in the long run. However, they were a necessary short-term evil that had to be carried out in order to maintain stability in the country.

It’s values are good but it doesn’t have to be the only system that works. Certain countries became powerful under other systems with the secular value (allowing all religions to happen in the country)

I really like secularism myself since I think it's the best way to treat all people fairly a nation, however I believe it's also important to have some common principles/beliefs/ideas uniting a nation. For the USA, it's freedom and democracy (at least according to their constitution) but I think it can also be reasonable to to choose religion as a common denominator. I really like and respect Atatürk's achievements, but attacking religion in the name of progress is a form tyranny just like a theocratic state persecuting minorities would be. I believe it would've been wiser if he tried incorporate more tolerance in his reforms.

Isn't it funny how the guy came to power by promising a parliment then closing it 2 years after and after that oppresses the people, bans any form of literature that questions his rule, destroys the navy that his uncle created with such effort becouse he was afraid of a coup, gives away Cyprus to the British, Tunisia to the French and then he reopens the parliment, makes a fake uprising so the parliment gives up then gets stomped and thrown off the throne is the last great Sultan. His only good doings is that he opened a bunch of schools, made railroads and held good relations with the Germans so they would modernize the army and keep the crumbling countries shit together if Russia invades again. Imagine if you will, a country, that saw one of the greatest historic figures who ever lived, single handedly saved a destroyed empire and turned it into a republic. The kinda guy who made turkey be the first and only nation which resisted colonialism through military combat and won. A guy who let religious extremists disappear, and argued westernised democracy to be the most pragmatic and reasonable path his nation could take. Just so that a few decades later, people who he saved and gave a second chance with a new future, return to their ignorant ways. if any other nation had a man like Ataturk instead of Turkey, trust me when i say this, that nation would easily be one of the top global powers today.

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was a man ahead of his time who foresaw how the west was indoctrinating the hardliners across the Middle East back in the 1890's. He saw Britain and France fanning the Wahabi flames and sending Laurence to Arabia to create the original Arab Spring that left no Arab with tulip leaf to show for it. Ataturk painted a vision of less fundamentalism and more cultural, technological and artistic impression. People forget the context of the times in which he operated which was a time less than 80 years after the British burned down the White House so its key to appreciate the context of the day

An Islamic majority region can exist well with a secular government.
