thanx for testing these turkey loads and for taking the recoil....better u than me LOL

I bought the Carlson's. 640 choke as well. At 20 yards it had a nice tight pattern. It opened up on me more than I expected at 30. I just shoot 2 3/4 7.5s or 6. The 4s didn't pattern very well at all. I did however just buy a Patternmaster choke, some 3 in. Grand Slam and some 3 in. Longbeard XRs. Hoping to get that 30 and 40 yard pattern where I want it.

The long beard XR Has been the best pattern out to 40 yd for me. Regardless of choke. Thanks for watching.

Too late to help you now, but I found that a pair of leather gloves between you and the gun really helps taking out some of the pain. There are special recoil pads you can buy, but sometimes you just need something at the moment.
@mitchweigel67132 жыл бұрын
That's definitely good advice. Shooting rounds like that off the bench is not easy. A lot of times I'll take my Sweatshirt and put it between my shoulder and the butt of the gun. But that has a tendency to mess up your site plain and aiming the shotgun. Luckily I only use the bench for testing purposes. When you're actually hunting and in the zone It really isn't that noticeable when you pull the trigger. Thanks for watching and good luck this Spring!

@Mitch Weigel Touching off those 3-1/2 artillery shells from a rest, the recoil is cruel. Federal makes a 1 oz slug load called a truball. It has a round nylon ball as part of the items launched down the barrel at 1600fps. They are very accurate with an astounding level of recoil. You really want to get those zeroed with a few shots as possible.

those big loads shot better than i thought they would out of that .640 choke. i think you would have more even patterns it you went with a .680 or .690 choke. i would also add a scope to raise point of impact a few inches.
@mitchweigel67133 жыл бұрын
Honestly I was a little surprised myself. I thought the factory full which I believe is around the .680 mark would have performed a lot better.but that's why I like to pattern everything because you never know.
@yourmomma29953 жыл бұрын
@@mitchweigel6713 the sxp has an overbored barrel and uses invector plus tubes. the factory full tube for invector plus is .710, i tried a .640 with my standard bore (.729) with standard invector choke and it was too tight for it, there were clumps of pellets and large holes or gaps in the pattern, i found i get denser patterns without the gaps in them from chokes around the .660 to .670 range.

I was going to ask why shoot a 3 1/2 shell ??
@mitchweigel67133 жыл бұрын
To be completely honest I'm not really a fan of the 3 1/2 inch shells. I feel that the advantages DO NOT out way the extra recoil that they produce. 3 inch shells with a 1 3/4 oz. or 2 oz. payload will perform just fine with a decent choke, and are way more forgiving on the shoulder. 3 inch 20 gauge is also a very good option as well.

Because killing turkeys is 100% strictly a numbers game meaning numbers of pellets you can put on target in a dense enough pattern to essentially gaurntee a killing shot this pattern density combined with level of retained energy determines your maximum ethical effect range Why do you think #8, 8.5 and #9 shot TSS are the undisputed kids of pattern density in both 10 and 20" circles all the way to 70 yards A 2oz load of #9 TSS has 724 pellets or 224% MORE pellets than 2oz"s of #5 shot I shoot #5 plated lead shot as IMO it is the shot size that is the best compromise between maintaining the highest possible pattern density and highest retained energy to achieve a maximum ethical effect range There are +/- 300 #5 lead pellets in a 12ga 3"" 1.75oz shell In a 12ga 3.5" 3oz of #5 There are +/- 346 #5 pellets or over 15% more #5 pellets vs a 3" 1.75oz I shot both out of both guns using no less than two different ID's of factory 870 and one factory Benelli and 3 AM chokes of different ID out of both of my 3.5" 870 ESM and 3.5" Benelli SN and the 2oz of #5 shot and the superiority of the patterns I got from 45-60 yards with the 3.5" 2oz #5 vs the 3" 1.75oz definitely justified using a 3.5" shell. I will readily admit n some guns and choke combinations 3" shells pattern as well as 3.5 " shells Just so happens 3.5" shells gave me superior patterns and increased my maximum ethical effect rangebby 30% so IMO they are absolutely worth using vs 3" shells I have shot most of the 3" and 3.5" turkey shells made by all major ammo manufacturers and all I shot will kill with a 90%+ consistently at 40 yards its between 45 and 50 most fail and 55-60 90-98% fail to produce IMO an ethical and effective killing pattern density out of my guns Unfortunately if you wish to take shots beyond 40 yards you MUST pattern you gun & choke combinations is the ONLY way to ethically do so. And yes IME aftermarket chokes definitely made a significant improvement in pattern density from 45-60 yards. Bottom line if your maximum acceptable range to shoot a turkey is 40 yards 12 gauge 3" or even 20ga plated lead shells will work fine but again even at 40 yards IMO patterning and checking your zero is still unquestionably a must. I practice as much as is required to be a competent shot on turkeys to 60 yards and top my guns with both 3moa RMR's or my VariX-II 2-7×33 SG scopes so accurate shot placement beyond 40 yards is no issue. It all comes down to what your personal maximum ethical and effective range is based 100% on your patterning results. Winchester Long Beard XR 12ga 3.5" 2oz #5 shot with a AM choke gives per my patterns consistently 15 pellets in the head and neck area at my maximum ethical and effective killing range. Unfortunately it took over 5 boxes of WLBXR's to determine this along with over 50 36"×36" patterning sheets I cut from brown contractor paper sold at big box stores like Menards or HD Patterning your turkey gun past 40 yards takes lots and LOTS of time and considerable cost again IMO it would highly unethical and you have no business shooting at turkeys unless you pattern your gun and shots beyond 45 yards should never be taken unless your patterns show you have a high enough probability to make an ethical killing shot. Just my personal experience based on test firing and patterning 100's of turkey specific 12ga 2.75", 3" and 3.5" shells.

That can be a hard one to pin down. Especially at the moment when shells can be few and far between. I've really been a fan of the long beard XR in number 5. Along with the Carlson long beard XR choke. This has been working very well in both my Winchester and my Remington. But I highly recommend buying a couple different shells and possibly a couple different chokes if you can get them. And patterning your shotgun is really important not only for pattern but for sighting in your gun. Most shotguns don't shoot exactly where you aim LOL! Thanks for the question. Let me know if there's any other way I can help out.. Good luck this Spring!

Carlson's choke are very popular, I got one in 12ga that was designed to shoot TSS it did nothing for me in my gun, the old choke jelly head worked much better, but just waste money so Carlson's as whole I would never buy again, I enjoy shooting shotguns, but I ask this as a question I don't own a 3 1/2 why would you pay extra cost and take hammering of recoil, when I seen lots people pattern guns in 3in and 3 1/2 and there is very little difference, and I ask why 3in 12ga vs 20 3in with tss in some case the later will out preform 12ga, it really is a just choice you make, the TSS is really costly but 1 shot 1 Gobble at what ever distant you yourself has set 10 yds- 40-50-60 the TSS in 410 shotgun 1 shot 1 gobble at 50 yds which was never possible before TSS AMMO, it's not the gauge it's the right choke and TSS AMMO that match worked together that has made all the 50-60-70-80-90-100yd wow patterns. which actually is not needed to kill a turkey, learn to call, learn how to set decoys, learn patience, scout and find area and you will enjoy the sport of 10-15-20 yd kills, turkey hunting is a sport not long distant precision shooting like you need to get 400 pieces of shot in a 10 in circle at 65 yds to go turkey hunting. will lots people falling for the sells pitch being made, it's hot subject and it has got more people patterning their guns, but main thing it's done other companies seen all the wowing jumping up down, so they try to get in on the action, and lot if not all doing it, but there is always winners Apex all their custom rounds really really good then Boss they are good, Federal and Browning not bad and there are others that really good, But they are all in common they want your cash and those TSS loads will suck your bill fold dry, as all Ammo these days, the shortages were created for a reason, and then virus hit at the right time to help with profits, Gun Control, limitation of companies and companies selling out business more and more shortages, until stores took ammo off the shelf and you had to ask, you could no longer see how much they had or kinds or weighs if you bought you got whatever an employee handed you. Yes me too fell for sucker pinch TSS in 410 but without it no using 410 for me, Yes 20ga also TSS really makes it a power house, Why not? aren't we all after 1 shot 1 kills and no other ammo has had such affect on guns. yea was a big jump going from muzzle loaders to lever action repeaters, then to galleying gun

I don't understand why people want to shoot 3 1/2 shells. Before they even started producing 3 shells, everyone shot 2 3/4 shell for decades. I personally refuse to shoot those magnum or super magnum shells. I shot 2 3/4 and I do very well. To me, those magnum 3 inch and the super magnum 3 1/2 shells are just a waste of money. Just learn to shoot better.
