Willamette River fish have been found to have mercury and PCBs, especially in their fatty tissue. Practice catch and release.

I like your drop shot setup but, the very best way to save your line is to throw on another swivel on the bottom and use a rubber band to attach the sinker. I learned this with bigger setups for ling cod in Humboldt Bay fishing from the jetty. This saves a ton of time not having to re-tie the leader whenever you lose a sinker.

Steel loads seem to always pattern worse thru any choke tighter then modified. Should've stuck with a modified or even improved cylinder. I'm not sure if this is a characteristic of steel or just the large pellets used for waterfowl. Lead Buckshot doesn't seem to do well with a full choke either.

Eleven plus pound of physical weight compared to 7.5 pounds for the 12 helps with recoil too.

Great video, the only issue I have with the 10 gauge is its availability in both firearms and ammo. It would be nice to see it make a comeback…

So funny, apples to apples😂So compare the 12 to the 410 with the 410 equivalent load in the 12. Not apples to apples. Far from it. How about the percentage of powder and shot equivalent to size of shell. Might have to use your calculator😂So tired of these 12 gauge people with these modern hot rodded loads saying they are comparable to a ten gauge. No one makes decent 10 gauge loads. Bottom of the line hands down 10 gauge destroys a 12. A 12 destroys a 410. Apples to apples is not a hot rodded load vs a weak load in a larger caliber. How about same length of barrels, similar chokes, and comparable loads per volume of shell. This was a bullshit test like all the others. I have been shooting guns for 40 years, the 10 gauge out performs the 12 all day long. Also barrel length more important than chokes, chokes over rated. Shoot the old Marlin super goose 36” barrel and try to find another 28” modern gun with any choke to drop birds at the distance the old fixed barrel Marlin could.. mostly marketing hype on these chokes.

What do you fish with? I’ve been fishing around the WV for about 2 years and all I have caught was a half inch pumpkinseed. I lot ST. Louis ponds but never catch anything

The bass at SLP are a hard catch. They get a pretty good amount of pressure. I find that Soft plastics ( Senkos, Baby Brushhogs, Craws ) fished weedless are most affective. I've never had much succes with top water there. Green pumpkin, Watermelon, and purple colered baits are the best colors in my opinion. Sometimes black or motor oil colors if the water is stained. Ponds 1 and 6 are my first stops, then I usually go to ponds 2 and 3. There are bass in all of the ponds, but some are better fishing than others. Fish will bite all day from about April to early October. But the last 2 hours of day light form late May to around the middle of July are probably the most productive. Then Middle of August to Early October in the evening and early morning. But it changes slightly from year to year. Hope this helps you out. Please practice catch and release with the bass. It takes quite a few years for them to grow large. GOOD LUCK!

The 10 gauge weighs 11 pounds, so that soaks up recoil. More pellets, going slower, makes a better pattern. The guy that makes Muller chokes did an interview, and he was talking about how the ammo companies are selling all this HV ammo that sucks. The black cloud also has a flite control wad, so... Yeah, your gonna get better pattern from slower, more pellets, flite control. What's the weight on your 12 gauge?

My winchester SXP is no more than 7 lbs. Probably more like 6 and half pounds. It is pretty light. I should make an update video. As this was made a few years back. I still enjoy my 10 gauge. But my opinion on ammo has changed a lot since I made this video. Going through the ammo crunch a few years back made me try different types of shells. And I found that both my 10 and 12 guage guns perform much better with heavier payloads, smaller shot size and lower velocity shells. My go to shell in my Winchester has been just the old Federal Blue box 3" 1 1/4 ounce of #3. I beleave they are advertised at 1425 FPS. I use a carlson Cremator mid range choke. It has been working out really good for ducks. Thanks for watching!

Just shot a melanistic turkey in South Dakota that we had been targeting since the springtime. I hope you guys got that bird mounted, the odds of finding a wild melanistic bird like that is approx 1 in 50,000-200,000 birds. Congrats guys! You shot a unicorn in the turkey woods! 🥳🥳🥳

Thanks Brother! Neither of us were too sure what was going on with that tom. We are not super expiereinced with turkey hunting. But we both could see that something was different about that bird. One of the locals said that it could be a cross between a wild rio and a domesticated spainish black. The bird is now with Jeremy in Montanna. He has not had it mountded yet. But is planning on it.

Opener this weekend. Thinking about takine the boat out. How busy does it get out there on opening day? Is it worth it for a new person to venture out on opener?
@mitchweigel6713

Opening day on the LC is a ZOO! There are hunters that show up Thursday night and camp out at the ramp. Then they head out Friday night and sit on there spots. It will die down a couple of weeks into the season. But the opener will be very busy. I would suggest going a little later in the morning, if you dont have a specific spot your heading to. I wont be hunting the opener there this year. But if you go be safe that part of the river is big and dangerouse! Good luck! let me know how you do.

Finally made it out there this year. Definitely a different hunting environment than what I'm used to. A lot to be learned. Manged to shoot a few, but retrieving was difficult. I saw you using a small kayak on few of your videos to retieve ducks. What kayak is that?

@@vouavue8309 Glad to hear you made out it out to the LC. I think its a place every duck hunter should get an opportunity to go. Its quite an expierence your first time. Unfotunatley I may not make it out there this season. Jeremy ( my buddy ) moved to Montanna. I also have been caring for my grandfather and have not had much time to hunt this season. The kayak that we use is a beavertail phantom. Its not my first pick for a retrieval vessel, but it works. Its pretty heavy for what it is. But they a more affordable then some other options. Merry Christmas, and stay safe out there!

I plan to go hunting for Hooded Merganser here in Texas this year. I've been doing my homework on preparation, and so far I see that there is a right and wrong way to prepare certain animals. Im glad your duck tasted as well as it did. They say these guys are fishy and liver like.

Since the making of this video I have had the opportunity to eat a few more Hoodies. They have been consistantly good. However I cant speak for Common and Redbreasted Merganser. But I think it really comes down to diet and what a bird has been eating. Like Mallards, some can be very good and others can be very strong tasting. Thanks for watching, and good luck to you!

Using 2.5" salted tubes with 1/8 oz weighted tube jig hooks on large mouth bass last week. Caught a few nice larger bass. 🙂. ever tried? Also I tied a fish gripper (for Bass only, net for trout) with about 4' of para-cord to kayak. Helpful in giving time to sort out gear and iphone for pics, while fish is back in the water.

I was using the KVD Bitsy tubes and jigs a couple weeks ago on the Willamette down by Hebb park. The smallmouth were smashing them. Caught multiple 2 lb fish with my buddy. It was one of the best days of smallmouth fishing I've had in a long time. I'll try the gripper idea. I need to pick another one up. They make it so much easier to weigh fish with out hurting them.

Gripper is useful! Don’t know how you film and fish in a kayak…. I’m glad not to drop a rod or iPhone in the water, stab myself with a hook, go for a unplanned swim, etc while respecting and carefully handling a angry bass. Keep up the videos! Always on the look out for good ideas for the kayak or float tube.
