WHAT ARE TURKISH GERUNDS (VERBAL NOUNS)?

Gerunds are words that are made in verbs but used as nouns in a sentence. Unlike in English where gerunds are usually nouns that have an ‘-ing’ ending, in Turkish we have many more derivatives, we add different derivational suffixes to the verb root to make gerunds. The Turkish language uses gerunds as nouns, adjectives and adverbs in a sentence.
Here is a list of gerunds we will learn in this lecture:
For ‘-ince/-ınca’ as ‘when’
For ‘-ir ..-mez’ as ‘as soon as’
For ‘-diği/-dığı/… zaman’ as ‘when’
For ‘-diği/-dığı/… sırada‘ as ‘at the time when’
For ‘-dığında/-diğinde/…’ as ‘when’
For ‘-madan/-meden önce’ to say ‘before’ the action occurs
For ‘-dikten/-dıktan sonra’ to say ‘after’ the action occurs
For ‘-ana kadar’ and ‘-ıncaya kadar’, to say ‘until’ the action occurs
For ‘-dıkça’ to say ‘as’ and ‘-dığı sürüce’ for ‘as long as’

Hello good people, is there any lesson on differing participle such as -dık (for example - konuştuğum) and verbal noun -ma/-me (for example konuşmam). How can İ know when to use which one while speaking. Are there some rules to follow? Thank you all 🙏

I think the most suitable English translation for gerund of state is "while" not "by"

Yes, that's normally the case. But please remember that grammatical translations and literal translations may not always be the same. In this case we don't actually need either a while or by inside the parentheses.

Hey -me/-ma are also used for negatives as well as to make gerunds So if we ahve to say i am not waiting how will we say that i turkish?

Merhaba! the '-me/ma' suffix is the negation suffix used in most grammar topics. Sometimes the e/a inside this suffix is dropped and only the '-m' is added prior to the main grammatical suffix. The sentence 'I'm not waiting' would simply require the Present Continuous Tense. 'wait' is 'bekle' in Turkish. If we were to add 'to wait' 'beklemek' a negation suffix it would be 'beklememek' meaning 'to not wait'. The Present Cont. Suffix is '-iyor' added after the stem 'bekle'. In Present Cont. we drop certain vowel sounds like the 'e' at the end of the stem verb 'bekle'. The sentence would be 'Seni beklemiyorum' meaning 'I'm not waiting for you'. @@zoya2823 The Pronoun 'beni' is the 'I' pronoun with the Accusative Case. It is used to say that the action (verb) is done to the pronoun (ben). It is similar to the English 'the' definite article used before a noun. 'Bana' is the Dative Case (to) suffix added after the pronoun 'Ben (I). When you say 'bana' it simply means 'to me'. Let's see some examples: 'Beni seviyor' = He/She like me (The pronoun is effected from the action) Bana hediye verdi = He/She gave me a present. The verb 'vermek' requires the Dative Case added to the pronoun/noun to show the 'TO' movement. Please don't try to do direct translation from Turkish to English or English to Turkish. Try doing literal translations focusing on the meaning that is being portrayed.

We don't say 'kapı çanı' in Turkish. If we want to say the 'door rang' we say 'kapı çaldı' which means 'the door bell rang'.

If you're giving advice to somebody else "ezberlemen lazım", if you're saying it to yourself "ezberlemem lazım". Both is correct depending on the context ;)
