A dictionnary too. But better : English is not my first language and voc is not translated.. most of the time. So no : I need to make researches because... it's wrong. I tried with my mothertongue : same matter, plus the problem of the pronounciation. Too less "human", so the app can't really teaches. But it's useful : I use it. But for the voc clearly it's very poor

I became fluent in Romanian and French using Duolingo. Not only, of course, but it helped me a lot. I'm starting Turkish now, and even if sentences are weird you are still learning grammar rules and words in context. If you know how to say "the dog is at the office" and "is the spider working ?" so you know how to say "I'm at the office" "I'm at work" "are you at the office" or "are you at work ?" ... And never forget that Duolingo is free 😉

I completed the entire Turkish course on Duolingo while living in Turkey. Whenever I met actual Turks, it was like they spoke an entirely different language. I couldn't understand a word, and most phrases from Duo were useless in real-life situations. It was really frustrating. Like, Turks use the expression "Kolay gelsin" a lot. It's like street Turkish 101, the basics of real Turkish. Not a single "Kolay gelsin" mentioned in Duo. So, Duolingo Turkish is better than nothing, but you better stray from it as early as possible. Go talk to real Turks and ask them for guidance instead.

As a person who has primarily used Duolingo to learn Turkish, I would say that this isn't entirely accurate. It's true that some sentences are extremely strange but, in my opinion, Duolingo has many positives as well. There are some grammar notes before most lessons (although only available on the web version, as far as I know); the comment section after each exercise can be a gold mine of tips, pointers and explanations about WHY a certain thing is the way it is; and most importantly, there is no barrier to entry since the app is totally free. That makes it so easy to just try it out first and later decide whether you want to only use Duolingo or use it in combination with other resources/courses/apps.

It’s the random sentences that the app teaches that no one will use.

My 171 day streak cries inside. That aside, I think it's unrealistic to expect to go from Duolingo straight to conversation. My goal is to able to read a children's book 😂

I tried Duolingo Turkish and it was awful: pointless sentences, no explanation of rules or why you got something wrong, having to redo sentences if you get one letter wrong in a sentence, robotic fast voices, no stories so you never hear a coherent Turkish sentences, and more. I switched to Babbel that at least gives me basic words 🤷🏽‍♂️

@@Turkishle Duolingo just has random, silly sentences in Turkish like your examples in your videos. At least, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and French has sensible stories and very basic grammar rules while having silly sentences in the lessons.

This. I tried Duolingo for Turkish and it’s really bad. 😅 I ended up taking private lessons and using other resources like this channel, for example.
