Why do we have a tendency to hold on to the past? Why do we continue to let the most painful experiences in our lives not only influence, but control our future? And what would life look like if we were able to let go of the past, shed the stories that we carry with us and move forward in a way that is untethered to the pain?
Welcome to the Tony Robbins Podcast. In this episode of the real breakthrough series, we’re diving into a particularly sensitive subject - letting go of past trauma.
Some of you may have endured unspeakable trauma in your lives. But as horrific as these experiences were, you may continue to hold on to them, fervently at times. Because letting go can be terrifying.
But holding on has profound consequences of its own. We continue to give the pain power. We keep cords of energy tied to the people that hurt us. We even let these terrible experiences become part of our identity.
In this episode, you’re going to hear from JoLynn - a woman who endured tremendous trauma in her past. And for years, decades even, she allowed that pain to dictate her life. She lived in a story of hurt, and she suffered massively because of it. But by working with Tony, she was able to step outside of that pain and gain a new level of understanding and perspective. And in a moment, she broke through to the other side - where she was able to let go, find forgiveness and choose a life of love and appreciation.
Discover Date With Destiny - Tony Robbins’ most intimate event, where tens of thousands of people have committed to designing their most beautiful lives. Over six immersive days, you’ll explore the depths of what drives every behavior, thought, decision and emotion you experience - and you’ll learn how to take control of your life to feel more joy, freedom and love than ever before.

Don't rent space in your mind to those who have hurt you. It's empowering to know that what's occurred in the past doesn't have to prevent you from doing the extraordinary going forward

The statement that people are addicted to problems is a fact. I witness people associate their needs for significants and attention everyday at my job to problems and it has become a culture that everyone uses to justify their lack of personal accountability. They never seek solutions just keep creating more problems. Great lesson in this video!

A very inspiring story. Life experiences can give a huge contribution to who you are and who you will be. It will leave a certain mark to yourself that you can use as an inspiration throughout your life journey. People say leave the past behind but don't forget the lesson you have learned on that experience. 🚀

It’s crazy that we all traumatize each other and then spend millions to undo the trauma we all did and do.

That's a amazing story. I'm very proud of her. She's got a great husband. Words are very powerful, they can make us and they can break us down, rip our world apart. My experience with words started the day, I asked myself these two questions. Who am I? How did I get this way? The many trips to the library to learn about the brain wasn't of much use. The answers to these two question would come 15 years later. And I wasn't mentally prepared for them. By age 50 anxiety, insomnia, hearing things are ripping my mental state apart. One evening while I walked my dog for an hour, I stopped and asked myself a question. How did I live as a kid? I wanted to know how I connected with the life around me. What I discovered was that I had a monk like mind. The way my parents raised me was very much like that of a child being raised in a monastery. I was never talked to, I was never shown any affection, I was never taught anything. My father would redirect my attention to keep me from getting hurt. But, he would never stop me from trying to do something that was dangerous. "If, you want to do that, you have to find another way" While, my siblings attended school. I spent my days out in nature. The first six years of my life, I didn't have a mind, so, I was dependent on my mother. After the a near drowning, I still had no mind, but, I wasn't passive anymore. This traumatic experience was never talked about and I wouldn't have been able to grasp what they were telling me, anyway. Each evening, as I walked Vica for an hour. I would spend that hour recalling my childhood. What I discovered was that, I had pretty good recall, being that I lived fully in the moment. The memories are like video recording, sometimes with smells. So, it was like going back and looking at home videos of my childhood. I could clearly see that I simply didn't have a mind. And this state would state with me into my late teens and most of it into my early 30s. This is what I discovered, which by the way brought me a great deal of success in school and working in any kind of business. I woke with an open mind, went through each experience with an open mind. 1. Accept everything, everyone and every situation with an open mind. Thats means, there's no assuming, guessing or judging. 2. By being open minded to the moment, it fully accepted as not being right or wrong, good or bad, or positive or negative. 3. At some point the moment comes to an end. Let it go, forget about it like it never happened. 4. Because, there is no mind, there is no past, no past, means, Move on to whats coming next. Repeat 1 thru 4 all over again. It took about six months to get this down and when I did, I realized it as walk meditation. A Zen state of living through each experience, eating, showering, listening to someone talk...etc Within the next 6 to 8 month, my sleep returned, the music went away, I got my weight down to where it was in high school. Through neuroplasticity, I woke up a part of my brain that was never present in my entire life, which is affection. So, here I am at soon to be 59, and life is just opening up new experiences in ways that I have never experienced in my entire life. When, I give or receive a hug, its so amazing, although it came a little late in our 37 year marriage that ended in 2017. The things I'm experiencing today, are the things I didn't get to experience in the beginning of my life. You could say that, this is what she is experiencing.

Tony is wrong when he says everyone has been hurt before at different levels and overcome it. Some people have been hurt worse that is a BIG deal, there are different levels of pain. That is a BIG deal. Others have over come but still others have not. That is another BIG deal. People are different, some need help, others don't. Depending on individual experiences, circumstances ect. If a person cannot it is not their fault! So many people victim-blame. He should say if you cannot overcome trauma, its not your fault but please reach out for help. Please take another chance with humanity because yes there are a lot of evil people who enjoy hurting others but there is a lot of heroes in this world and if you can find one they might just remind you there is still a reason to keep fighting. I don't know. Most people dont really get it but I do.
