You could make your dirt in front of the window, a little bit deeper, and slide the concrete chunk into the hole in order to cause a mud free zone. Sort of a mini patio in front of the window.

Make that concrete slab a mini plant patio

It is my understanding that all egress windows in basement areas must open inward so they cannot be blocked from opening by anything on the outside.
@theweekendbuilder Жыл бұрын
Building code requires that the window open fully but doesn’t specify which direction.

Your reaction after conquering that slab is awesome. Must have felt awesome haha

How much did the saw cost to rent?
@jbstepchild2 ай бұрын
Three round ties 4ft long to remove the concrete block or break it up or put it under the window Was that a fire window for easy escape

The slab? Dig hole deeper and use as a standing platform just outside the window

What did you end up doing with the slab? i would find a local business that delivers concrete entry stairs or concrete risers for septic tanks. call them up and ask them if they might take it away for some cash. i cant imagine renting a jackhammer to break it into small pieces for removal would be a fun afternoon.

Question so a 72x24 window is that under guidelines for a room? I’m also in Atlanta. Shoot I might need your help lol my first time doing it
@theweekendbuilder Жыл бұрын
It depends on the type of window. If it’s a casement window than it might be okay, if it’s a traditional window it might be small. Your window has to have an opening that is at least 5.7sf and 20” wide. It’s most likely that a 24” window doesn’t have a 20” wide opening. I bought one and had to return it because it was like 19.5”

I'm looking to do this for my basement. My question is I have a room in the basement already but does the egress have to be in that room or can it be in the main part of the basement?
@anayar2 Жыл бұрын
Depends on code where you live but generally it must be IN the bedroom. Of course, if you don't call it a bedroom then the egress can be anywhere i.e. if you're just making more living space (in which case an egress may or may not be needed in the first place).

In snowfall or raid does this kind of window work?
@theweekendbuilder Жыл бұрын
Yes, works great in rain! I imagine it will work perfectly normal in a snowfall too except maybe if you live in a heavy snowfall region where the snow could pile up high enough to physically stop the window from opening
@ajay72588 Жыл бұрын
do you have the link for the window?

You might have to copy paste this. I’ll put it in the description soon as well www.homedepot.com/p/TAFCO-WINDOWS-36-in-x-48-in-Right-Hand-Vinyl-Casement-Window-with-Screen-White-VC3648-R/203819917

Yep, I would say 3-4 days of work total.

Wouldn’t you need an structural engineer to look at it? Since you are changing the basement structure? I want to do this men I’m in PA
@theweekendbuilder Жыл бұрын
It’s a great idea to get a structural engineer to look at it before building. All of that will get checked during the permit process though

I would suggest wearing a mask when cutting concrete. It contains silica fibers and is similar and dangerous to inhaling asbestos.

Drain is not adequate, weeper must be installed vertically all the way down to gravel at footings, interior header also not built correctly, needs to sit on queen studs and tacked to kings. The fact you barely excavated is irrelevant to how to build.
@theweekendbuilder Жыл бұрын
Incorrect, this is not a window well, it does not need a drain going down to the footings. And I don’t know how much experience with framing that you have but you’re referring to jack studs I don’t know what you’re going off about with “queen”?
@michaelthoma18 күн бұрын
@@theweekendbuilder I'm betting you didn't get this work permitted. The framing around the window, including the header, isn't sufficient. The left side (as looking outward) doesn't have a continuous vertical piece of wood (rim studs) backing up the cripple stud. The number of rim studs on each side needs at least equal 1/2 the number of cripple studs above the header. Which means you basically need at least two on each side (plus the cripple stud). Not one as shown on the left or zero on the right. Good luck with disclosures when you sell the house.
@michaelthoma18 күн бұрын
@@theweekendbuilder Also, those saw slots left in the foundation are terrible. It leaves concrete cantilevered / unsupported. Concrete doesn't do well in bending. Expect cracks to propagate from those locations. You should have drilled fairly large holes at the two corners (tangent) and not sawed past those holes. You should also saw from both sides to compensate for the circular blade. This also minimizes the remaining concrete needing chiseled to finish a clean rectangle.
