Turning a penny into a light bulb

For this one, I'm going to be turning a copper penny, into a light bulb. The magic happens when a red hot penny, is lowered into a beaker, over some acetone.
NOTE: It's important that the penny is pure copper. If it's made with zinc, it'll melt.

It’s important to note the year of the penny. It has to be an older penny as they are pure copper. Post 1982 Pennies were zinc coins plated in copper. Zinc melts at relatively low temperatures… red hot does exist with Zinc. It will liquify and drip out of any deep scratches.

Its remind me an object called "chaufferette" here in France. It work with a little platinium mesh on the top of a coton filled metal container impregnated with lighter fluid (like a Zippo, but larger). When you heat the platinium, it start to catalyse it and produce its own heat for several hours. Very usefull in cold winter evening, for keeping your hands warm in your pockets ^^ Please let me know how you call this object in English, i'm curious to hear it :)

This reaction blew my mind when I heard of it the first time. I tried it with coiled up copper wire. This increased the active surface area and decreased the thermal mass at the same time. It produced a decent amount of light but tended to catch on fire.

Probably worth noting that for US pennies, you need to use a pre-1982 penny for this. Pennies from 1982 onward are copper plated zinc, and trying to heat them that hot may cause the zinc to melt.

Cerium, iron, manganese, nickel, platinum, rhodium, palladium, as well as copper can all catalyse the reaction between hydrocarbons and oxygen. But nickel can produce nickel tetracarbonyl, which is poisonous. If you have any of these metals lying around, it would be interesting to see if there are any differences when they react. Does the "light bulb" get brighter? Is it a different colour? Do they get hotter?

So I actually have a use for this kind of dim red lighting - it's beautiful and provides vision to critical areas in the pitch when you need it. However, one question - how long can you get a reaction like this to last efficiently, and how small a space can you fit it in? Does using a larger metal plate and a mixture of water and acetone work better? Perhaps alcohol of some sort? I would actually like to see this taken to the extreme. If nobody else has a reference to someone doing this as a main focus, please let me know if you would be interested or there is another video like this. I would be glad to research more on how to make my own low-energy night lamps with this.

It lasts as long as there is enough Acetone evaporating beneath it. Acetone evaporates relatively quickly, but if you keep enough of it below the penny, you could keep it going for a while.
