That bungee trick is spot on! Glad you took the time to tape off the bearing hub. I see so many other channels just leave that all exposed and go to grinding or machining. I have a vintage Brown & Sharpe 18" vernier caliper that t I picked up at an estate sale for $20. It's a beaut.

My preference is to take apart and clean after machine work. I have had poor luck trying to keep every bit of grit out of assemblies. Usually that stuff needs taken apart and inspected anyways to do a proper job.
@hilltopmachineworks21318 ай бұрын
@@bcbloc02 I agree. Hopefully he cleans it thoroughly before assembly. I figured I would at least keep out the majority of it.

When I did brake drums &rotors,the first thing was to remove bearings and seals, clean the hub then turn. You Need to repack the bearings. The fillings will destroy the bearings. Good job.

@bcbloc028 ай бұрын
Sounds like it might be cheaper to buy the kit to switch the trailer to disk than to fool with those high priced drums. My electric over hydraulic disks are awesome. I would never have another electric drum brake trailer.
@hilltopmachineworks21318 ай бұрын
I am guessing he does not want to fool with it since he is going to sell the trailer once he gets it back together.
@TheAyrCaveShop8 ай бұрын
Yeah makes total sense, $400 x 4 drums = Ouch, probably what the trailer cost.. And enough iron shavings to keep the local high school science department supplied for a few years. 😂😂
@hilltopmachineworks21318 ай бұрын
Yeah Dean how crazy is that. I forgot to ask the customer what the gross weight rating was for the trailer. I am guessing it is up there.

Run an OEM drum until it is out of spec. Easily 500k miles. Then buy OEM again. Sure the after market seems like a smokin deal. But there is less material. The new to discard is half or less. They also tend to deform more easily, although not as bad on a trailer.
