Anakin is such a true Jedi, that he isn't attached to not committing war crimes either. He tries to educate others in the Jedi code forbidding attachments, like helping Tusken raiders have their heads not be attached to their necks. He spoke truly when he said he would share these lessons with the younglings.

@@travisleabeck2572 That goes both ways. If they were prepared for that then you could've just done a different move. Just because a counter exists doesn't mean it's not a viable technique. By the way, there's lots of ways to make this technique work that weren't shown in the video. The most obvious one that comes to mind is if you're attacking and they're blocking, you can just turn it off/on for an easy bypass and kill.
@natchu96
@natchu96 Жыл бұрын
The turning blade off stumble really only works when the two duelists are already pushing against each other, you can't completely cancel forward momentum no matter what you do but some sort of off-balance response should still be possible if they know what they're doing. Now passing the blade through just seems suicidal and relatively useless.
@bobbirdsong6825
@bobbirdsong6825 Жыл бұрын
@maxlohmusic Anyone who’s ever fenced or boxed will dispute this because it doesn’t make sense. You can simply… move your lightsaber into them once they turn theirs off. Given how long a lightsaber takes to ignite and turn off anyway, it’s not practical because there’s a variety of force moves that are more effective and accomplish the same thing without getting rid of the thing that keeps you alive.
@MaxLohMusic
@MaxLohMusic Жыл бұрын
@@bobbirdsong6825 Why do you assume I haven't fenced or boxed? You simply aren't thinking it through. First off you're obviously not going to use the technique if it would've resulted in you being skewered; you would've sidestepped in some way to prevent that and allow you to capitalize on it. Secondly there are tons of ways to use this technique beyond what the video portrayed, which you can imagine using just an ounce of creativity. The most obvious one being when you attack and they're blocking, you turn it off and on really fast to bypass the block. If they've committed to the block because they assumed you wouldn't use this technique, there's literally no counter.

@@mehcide4767 Weight is not a problem, applied force is a problem. Weight or not, you still push your lightsaber into the other's... Beam? Beam which provides resistance, it pushes back. Powering off the lightsaber means that suddenly all the force applied goes at once. Sure, having less weight makes it more maneuverable but it's still a surprise and a few moments to get back into a stance. Those few moments can be the difference between life or death. Then again I may be reiterating what you just said, I didn't really know what you meant.

There were also lightsabers equipped with “flicker blades” or something to that effect. The idea is that they would randomly turn off, just for a split second, so that even the wielder didn’t know when it was going to happen. The idea is that since there was no method for activation, there would be no tell that it was coming, and the opponent would have no way of reacting in time. However, using one of these was incredibly dangers, because if you were ever the on on the defensive, that random flickering could cost you your life. So you basically had to play all out offense when using them, never giving your opponent a chance to get one over on you. They were eventually outlawed for obvious reasons.

@@Gen0ration9k what you are referring to is a style that had the blade RANDOMLY turn on and off so it would surprise both combatants. the one who uses it would have trained to better react the randomness. It needed to be random to mess with the force telling your opponent your intention of turning it off. turning off a saber mid-combat is extremely dangerous because among other things force sensitives can see the future, sense danger, feel the power fluctuation of a lightsaber, and move so quickly as to take advantage of the mechanical time it takes for a lightsaber to turn on and off. one of the darkside's many powers is to cloud the force making it harder for lightsiders to see the future and anticipate their actions. so the on off moves work best for a darksider then the jedi in this "100% cannon clip" from star wars. on a side note the 4 sith we see in the saga, are all expertly skilled in saber combat. they are all to arrogant to try this, even vader who by all evidence invented it and used it to beat yoda.

One aspect of Trakata people don't even comment on is the ability to momentarily point the blade at yourself in order to get the blade to appear in an unexpected angle. For example, say you're blocking a hit from the left and want to retaliate with a slice downwards. With the blade on, you'd need to orient the blade upwards first, giving your opponent time to react. But, if you turn off the blade after the block, you can use the momentum FROM blocking to point the emitter at yourself and use a more spontaneous hand movement to flick the emitter at the opponent. Once you have momentum, you can then turn on the blade. This limits how fast your opponent can physically react to how you attack and would be a godsend for double-bladed use.

Doesn't really explain why Sith don't do it. The real answer is - because it would've been hell to choreograph and impossible to implement on screen when the OT came out. It's an obvious lore hole that you're expected to roll with, there will never be a solid enough explanation that won't just be a crutch. There was a CGI trailer for The Old Republic that featured this kind of constant flicking of the switch, it looked cool. Edit: to everyone who says Sith don't do it cuz it's honourless\cowardly\they have standards: there might be some Sith like that in the expanded universe, but in George's movies we see only Sith who don't give a damn about such concepts. This was addressed in legends, and it was said that it was a "forbidden" move that both the Sith and Jedi banned from their trainings. The Sith viewed it as a move only the weak would use since they believed it showed that whom ever used it lacked the skill to actually win a duel the traditional way. The Jedi just viewed it as unfair and uncharacteristic of a Jedi, so they banned it. I think they even associated it as a "darkside" technique at one point.

For like the three people who don’t know, this is an actual fighting style in Star Wars lore. It’s called Trakata and it’s shunned on both sides because the Jedi think it’s dishonourable and the Sith think you’re a pussy if you use it.

In the Jedi Order, turning on and off a lightsaber to gain advantage over someone was against the code, and among the sith as well it was mutually agreed that it was dishonorable to do so hence why it's never done.

In the expanded universe this was actually brought up in the lore as a dueling strategy that neither the Jedi nor the Sith particularly liked. But in all practicality it would be tricky to pull on another Force-user, and a risky gambit besides, because of the whole "precognitive reflexes" thing. It strikes me as the kind of trick that would only win a fight for someone who already had an advantage against their opponent anyway.

I practice longsword and actually just learned a similar technique to this that involves doing an overheard slash, but midway through the slash you fake out and pull back into an overhead guard. This leaves your opponent exposed as they would still be in mid reaction to the initial slash, thus leaving their entire side exposed to your now pointed blade and you can just stab them. It's proven to be a very effective technique in my limited uses of it so far. This whole retreating the lightsaber thing reminded me of that technique and I would totally be turning my lightsaber off mid combat too if they were real. lol

A lot of comments have probably said this already but i‘m gonna say it too. This was a strategy used by ancient sith. It died out due to both the jedi and the sith saying they hate it (for different reasons ofc)

This is actually a legit lightsaber technique.. but considered a double edged sword because it also leaves you vulnerable
@WufeiLord

It only has to work once. Once your opponent catches on, it's much less effective, but can still cause enough hesitation to get a strike in. And as was just said, one strike is all it takes.

_"This is actually a legit lightsaber technique.. but considered a double edged sword because it also leaves you vulnerable"_ Not a very smart one. In actual combat your aim is to target your opponents body, not their weapon. Which means that if I strike at you, you block my strike and suddenly remove the weapon which you used to block my strike with, my strike will continue towards the original target which was aimed at you. I would not suddenly falter away from you, because you are in the line I was aiming and pushing at. The joke works here visually because they are not trying to actually hit each other, they are just trying to push against their opponents weapon.

Lightsabers have been shown to active quickly or slowly there’s probably some lore explanation probably involving the force or a quickdraw button. This technique was canon back before Disney but was considered a cowardly method by Sith and a Sith method by Jedi. You’d deactivate your saber in a clash, avoid the blade of your opponent whilst reactivating to deliver a blow. Cal Kestis performed it against the Second Sister although it was done in a way to escape an unfavourable position.
@laestaca7182
@laestaca7182 Жыл бұрын
@@Lifeislikeadoughnut just hear the sound of an igniting lightsaber, it's at best too slow to regain ground quick enough, and the force it's not a get out of jail free card for anything even though that's how Disney uses it so stop making excuses, every iteration of the technique that is really useful it's when the blade turns so quick that the blade wasn't even off completely. Also the lore reason has always been stupid. The sith are asholes, many of them didn't cared for "honor" or "showing weakness" (like Palpatine or even the brotherhood of darkness, exar kun even was famous for using every advantage in battle no matter the context and that's why he made the double-bladed lightsaber) so they were always asholes that would definitely use the technique. Overall, the Canon is nonsensical and would have been better off just saying that the lightsaber just don't turn on quick enough, because it doesn't.

The best technique is just to create a droid that looks like you, have it draw a lightsaber, and when it and the jedi clash, it explodes delivering a wide area payload with the force of an atomic bomb.
@formdoggie5
@formdoggie5 Жыл бұрын
In the older books, they did actually account for this. Every lightsaber actually has a coded number of clicks, presses, and holds on the button to turn it on or off -- otherwise the person you were fighting would just turn yours off for you. Makes it difficult to pull off when your hand is often nowhere near the buttons while you are spinning and concentrating on not killing yourself with the thing, resisting being mind probed for your button combo, and resisting or concentrating enough to use the force on objects or people to do the same thing back.

Turn it off mid overhead strike and turn it back on as soon as youre passing the blades thickest point, when the saper meets the one now behind it it will be propelled forward, since they do an overhead block their blade is propelled up while your stroke downward is now propelled by the physical impossibility of overlapping sabers
