Interesting fact, Virgil Abloh helped design the cover of the album. It represented the death of the CD era in music (with the streaming era coming to fruition at the time). The empty CD case with the blank CD inside actually symbolises an open casket of the CD, much like funerals. That's the genius of Kanye and Virgil (RIP).

One thing I've noticed recently about this album is that On Sight and Bound 2 are both opposite yet perfect bookends for this album, with On Sight being a very hard, intense song cut up by breaks of a much softer sample, whereas Bound 2 is a soft sample song that is interjected by a hard bass more reflective of the rest of Yeezus throughout. Amazing that 9 years later there are still layers that you can uncover from this album

About “Bound 2“ not supposed be there: pretty sure this song is supposed to act as a very tongue in cheek ending to the acid induced nightmare that is Yeezus. It is a complete shift in tone with themes centering around true love and finding the right person/building a family, almost suggesting an antidote to the previous nightmarish journey. But of course that comical happy ending reminiscient of a 60s TV show seems to good to be true and feels out place, we kinda know something is off. Uh-huh honey.

The sample used in "On Sight" that plays in the middle of the track states that "He'll give us what we need, but it may not be what we want.". This not only perfectly shows how he knew people would react to the album, but also it explains Yeezus as a whole. The album may not be what people wanted, but Kanye felt that we needed something not done yet by him, and something new in the mainstream world of music, which he definitely brought attention to.

JUST AN FYI, the effect used on “Hold My Liquor” is called the “Prisimizer” effect. It’s used by fusing any auto-tune and the Antares Harmony Engine (really any harmony multiplier) together. Bon Iver was one of the first artists to use it in his music. Really beautiful sonically 🥰

Hold My Liquor isn't Prismizer, just the Antares Harmony Engine software - but they're related. Francis of Francis and the Lights "invented" the Prismizer by controlling Harmony Engine with a MIDI keyboard (obviously the functionality was there already but he was the first known to use it this way). Then he showed this to Justin Vernon of BI, whose engineer Chris Messina recreated the effect in hardware (Eventide H8000). The version that Justin uses on his albums is called the Messina. But on Yeezus it's just Harmony Engine running on an auto setting, no keyboard, which is what really makes the difference.

Fun fact: Kid cudi didn’t even record his feature for guilt trip! Kanye found those vocals that Cudi recorded for a demo and just chopped it and put it on guilt trip. It’s so crazy cuz his vocals go so well with the song and beat…also around that time was when Cudi left GOOD Music…kanye ironically used the part where he says “if you love me so much then why’d you let me go?”
@jiketagg4251

Yep and it also caused a riff between the two that ended with Cudi checking himself into rehab and Kanye getting the crowd during the Life of Pablo tour to sing for Cudi’s well-being with the number 1 song in the country at the time, “Father Stretch My Hands pt.1”. Eventually they’d heal together and spawn the all powerful Kids See Ghosts

Bound 2 is meant for the album. It’s a purposeful contrast as it’s actually musical as opposed to the harshness of the rest of the album. It’s supposed to demonstrate the potential of the romance. It was overall indicative of him finally starting to date Kim and the hope he had for the relationship. It’s why you have that interlude in the middle of on On Sight. It foreshadows the music you’ll eventually get on Bound 2, an antidote to the intensity of everything else. Hope in the midst of darkness.

@@doitright5819 very similar to his in this videos but that was simply due to me experiencing the music and composition first. It was very different from what I’ve heard of Kanye up until that moment (not to imagine music in general in the early 2010’s). But as I listed again and again and finally looked into the sample he used, it became that much more grounded. It added onto the weight of the song. The original sample is so eerie and just overall morbid so although he changed it up here adds onto the monstrous theme I remember when I saw him live at SP tour, when it was dark and I heard that intro piano key - goosebumps. This song hits different when you experience it live

Hold my Liquor sums it up: Chief Keef who just emerged to the scene, Bon Iver who were already a recognized indie band. On the production, freaking geniuses like Mike Dean and Noah Goldstein, as well as this independent venezuelan producer turned into electronic glitch music revolutionary ARCA (!!!!) Arca was one of three leading producers on this album. I believe she has production credits for "Hold My Liquor", "I'm In it", "Blood on the Leaves", "Send It Up", and "New Slaves". Although she only has credits on those songs, her sound and impact is absolutely felt on the entire project. According to interviews with Arca, Kanye basically needed help making the album sound as industrial as it is. By that time, Arca had released her EP Stretch 1 and her album Stretch 2, which attracted Kanye's attention. Although she had other crazy projects out, like "Xen" and I believe "Mutant", it was the stretches that really got Kanye on the Arca wave. Kanye's team then reached out to her, and she responded by just sending them back what she considered to be her most insane and out of the ordinary production at the time. In "Hold My Liquor", you can actually hear some direct samples from Arca's album "&&&&&" in it. If you love this sound from Kanye and are looking to get into more industrial or "avant-garde" music, I really recommend Arca. I genuinely don't think there is anyone better making music currently. She also collaborated with fellow producer Sophie on the song "La Chiqui" off of her of album KiCk i and it's literally divine with how extravagant and extreme that track is. That quote your dad said about "Blood on the Leaves" with how it sounds like a two hour climactic movie condensed into song is basically the perfect way to describe all of Arca's music. Everything she does is indescribable and leaves both musicians and producers baffled at how she does what she does. If you particularly like the sound of Yeezus, I recommend starting with her album "KiCk iii", as it is her most straightforward, aggressive album. Arca is like a psychedelic for music -- none of it makes too much sense at first glance, you can't really grasp it, but once you get comfortable with the experience her art is genuinely profound. It also shows how tasteful Kanye actually was, as Arca was really underground by the time Yeezus was coming out. With that being said though, Arca was attracting attention to herself at the time due to her collaborations with Bjork -- which are also phenomenal and life changing. I can't imagine having enough respect as a musician and producer to be directly requested by KANYE to be one of the lead designers of his project. It also really shouldn't matter, but considering how hypersexual, homoerotic, and transsexual Arca's work has always been, it again is just a testament to her craft that Kanye and his collaborators looked past all their biases to just collaborate with her artwork.

I think that Bound 2 having quite a different feel to the rest of the album is really a metaphor that speaks volumes on how abstract the album feels compared to lots of other music, including his own. The song takes you to a different place artistically, only for those 2 cuts throughout the song to suddenly drag you back into the Yeezus soundscape, feeling almost jarring (again like the entire album) and acting like someone falling asleep, only to be snapped back to reality.

Charlie Wilson is an old singer. He just continues to make contemporary music. He was the frontman for the hitmaking Funk band The Gap Band. Check out their songs "Early In The Morning," "Outstanding," "Yearning For Your Love" and "You Dropped A Bomb On Me." He went solo in the 2000s and is highly in demand for hip hop acts like Kanye and Tyler The Creator.

Idk why people hated this album so much when it first released. I remember vividly hearing On Sight when i listened for the first time and instantly loving it. I had never heard anything like this album before. Coincidentally, this album led to me discovering Death Grips and i ended up loving their stuff too. Lol.

I was so hyped when I heard all the fuzz about the death grips influence but the second I pressed play on On Sight, it was hate at first sight. I still hate it. And I am a God. And Bound 2. And yet it's probably the record I have listened to most in my life.

Yeezus was the first Kanye album that I listened at launch, and I absolutely loved it. On Sight is such a great intro track because it just let you know that the album is different and that kanye is coming, "yeezy season approaching, fuck whatever y'all been hearing". Also he says to you is not what you want, "he'll give us what we need, it may not be what we want". That is directed at the guys that wanted the same things he did before, some wanted before 808's and some wanted MBDTF.

The outro section of "New Slaves" is sampled from a Hungarian rock song from the late 60's, titled "Gyöngyhajú Lány" which was originally performed by Omega, and was written by Presser Gábor, who is credited in the songwriting credits of Kanye's song thankfully
