Kanye West - 808s & Heartbreak
/ 808s-heartbreak
open.spotify.com/album/3WFTGI...
808s & Heartbreak is the fourth studio album by American vocalist and record producer Kanye West. It was released on November 24, 2008, by Def Jam Recordings and Roc-A-Fella Records. West recorded the album during September and October 2008 at Glenwood Studios in Burbank, California and Avex Recording Studio in Honolulu, Hawaii, with the help of producers No I.D., Jeff Bhasker, and others. The sessions also featured guest appearances by vocalists such as Kid Cudi, Young Jeezy, Mr Hudson, and Lil Wayne.
Conceived in the wake of several distressing personal events for West, 808s & Heartbreak marked a major musical departure from his previous rap records, instead featuring a sparse, electronic sound and vocals sung through an Auto-Tune processor. The production also abandons conventional hip hop sounds in favor of a minimalist sonic palette, with prominent use of the Roland TR-808 drum machine. West's lyrics on the album explore themes of loss, alienated fame, and heartache, inspired by the breakup with his fiancée, his struggles with pop stardom, and the death of his mother.
808s & Heartbreak debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling just over 450,000 copies in its first week. Despite varying responses from listeners, the album received positive reviews from most music critics, who generally commended West's experimentation, and was named one of 2008's best records in several year-end lists. Four singles were released in promotion, including the hit singles "Love Lockdown", which became West's highest Billboard Hot 100 debut of his career, and "Heartless". Despite its positive critical reception, the album was largely overlooked as a contender for the 52nd Grammy Awards, although the single "Amazing" received a nomination in the category of Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.
In the years since its release, 808s & Heartbreak has since been cited as a prominent influence on subsequent hip hop, pop, and R&B music, pioneering emo rap and experimental R&B developments in particular. This was due to a new wave of rappers, singers, and producers coming to adopt aspects of its style and thematic content. Rolling Stone included 808s & Heartbreak in its list of "The 40 Most Groundbreaking Albums of All Time" and ranked it number 244 on its revision to the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. By 2013, the album had sold 1.7 million copies in the United States, and was certified triple platinum in the US by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2020.

I get what you’re trying to say but you worded it kinda poorly. “Pays attention to the songs sonically”, I mean yeah, that’s the bare minimum for any music reaction channel. Maybe instead you should’ve said something like “he notices and appreciates every little sonic detail.” My comment may seem petty to criticize you over this but it’s important to communicate your ideas right or else people won’t take you seriously in a serious context

For me, "Pinocchio Story" is essentially Kanye realizing and coming to terms with (or at least trying to) the fact that everything that he achieved is worth less than the dirt underneath his fingernails compared to no longer having his mother around. It's haunting, it's beautiful, it's brilliant, it's tragic - and it's just incredible music and art.

I also feel that the fact the song is live makes it even better, he’s singing his heart out with deep lyrics and the crowd/fans cheering and listening as if it’s just a usual ‘non-deep’ song makes it so paradoxical and haunting in a sense.

While making the record and promoting it in interviews he did around this time (2008) he acknowledged a laundry list of new wave artists as a primary influence on the record, including but not limited to: Gary Numan, New Order, Phil Collins, and Tears for Fears. He also shouted out Portishead and Radiohead, and even proclaimed himself as 'black new wave' in one interview. I've always said his encyclopedic knowledge of music history was underrated.

Funfact, after the BAPE store encounter, Kanye almost brushed Cudi off, but after the hit of Day N Nite, Kanye called up Cudi to Hawaii, where he co-wrote 4 songs on 808s, including the Heartless chorus, and hooks on some songs in the Blueprint 3 for JAY-Z. I was 13 when 808s came out and at that time, I thought it was pure genius as a teenager. Heartless and Amazing were my top songs at the time. And what’s crazy is that this album is still genius and fresh till this day. Way ahead of his time. Kanye never disappoints…. he’s just a genius overall. And I’m glad your dad appreciates his timeless music.

Same bro. I was 14 and this album blew my mind I’m from Europe and I think Heartless and a few other tracks from 808s were the first time I heard Kanye and I associated him with that sound first. Became a fan since then

As the album came to a close and I sat here listening along with you both, I couldn’t stop the tears from falling. I lost my dad in 2008 and when this album came out, it resonated with me on several levels. I haven’t heard it in a while and I’m happy to have re-experienced it here. I appreciate what you’re both doing and I’m always stoked to listen along. I needed this. Much love & happy new year.

Coldest Winter is my fave too.....Saw Kanye perform it live in Toronto laying down, hanging off the point of a stage rising into the air, blue spotlight, & snow blowing as he belts this into the open air above him. There was also a mountain on stage as well. It was glorious. I can't wait until Your dad reacts to Yeezus, it's going to absolutely blow his mind.
