This is my process for doing turquoise inlay in woodwork. I learned this overtime and it holds up well. It may not be the best way but it works. I am including some call outs of the glue products I use, not because they are sponsors just because it is a great product.
I do not consider myself and expert and am open to constructive feedback.

I have seen many ways to use CA glue and powder but your way of joining and holding the 2 pieces of wood is very good. Thank you very much. Please keep sharing your videos.

I believe I would have used a bow tie that was about 1/2 or 2/3 the depth of your hole and glued that in first, then finished it off with the turquoise. I don’t think the ca plus the crushed turquoise will hold up with the movement of the wood through expansion and contraction. Plus it helps to conserve the turquoise.

Good vid Salvaged. Think you can mix that turqouise powder with clear resin. It will fill all the gaps inc the long thin cracks and be stronger / prevent the split getting any worse. Hope it's helpful :)
@salvagedcreation

Thanks and yes you can use it with epoxies or resins. This process is just faster and the inlay is extremely strong.

thanks for the video. what grit sandpaper do you use to sand it down?
@salvagedcreation
@salvagedcreation 3 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the question. I start back at the rough inlay with 100 grit on an orbital. But carefully work the rough crushed material off with the edge of the sander. If you just lay it flat it can knock off a big chunk and really swirl around marking up the wood. This might be a good idea for me to try another video, Thanks.

Does the CA glue cause blotchy staining when finishing? Thanks for the great video!
@salvagedcreation
@salvagedcreation 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question! It really doesn’t if you sand through it. You would think it would create a blotch where the glue hits the clean wood. You can see it dissipate as you sand. I am working on another video to try to show more of the finished product just so you can see. Best of luck, feel free to hit me up with more questions.

Pretty nice first video! Where did you source that beautiful stone? Can I just sand flush with regular sandpaper?
@salvagedcreation
@salvagedcreation Жыл бұрын
There is a link in the video description for purchasing the crushed stone. I use a 5” orbital for sanding it flush. Honestly that’s the most common question I’ve gotten so maybe I’ll do a sanding video. Thanks for the comment btw. Blessings, Scot

I notice all using inlay powder work on UNFINISHED pieces of wood. I am trying to replace missing inlay on very nice little Indian elephant leg table. How do I protect the finished wood?
@salvagedcreation
@salvagedcreation 2 жыл бұрын
That might be tough. Is it on a flat surface that you would be able to sand? If not I would try some of the Mica powder pigments and CA glue. Tape off the finished area with painters tape and wipe all the excess glue while it is wet. Let me know if you try it please or if you have more questions.

How do you sand the material? What type of device or sanding material is used?
@salvagedcreation
@salvagedcreation 2 жыл бұрын
I sand with an orbital 100 grit then work up. I need to do another video someday on the sanding process. There are a few little tips hiddin in there. Keep the material low low low so you are not sanding it off is the best advice.

Do you do the same thing with epoxy? Or would it be easier/cleaner to mix the pigment in with an epoxy and inject it into the cavity? Thanks a bunch!
@coyboy4ever
@coyboy4ever Жыл бұрын
Hey, great question! I should make another video for that. I pre-mix the epoxy and then add the pigment. But the trick I ( and a lot of others) use is we build a dam around the area with hot glue. It planes right off with the epoxy and leaves an excellent level surface.

Hey..Thanks for the video. I knew you were a midwestern. I'm a Yooper. I haven't ever built anything. My husband is carpenter, but he doesn't want to help. He's still working full time. I did my best to save a 150 year old Live Oak in my Houston neighborhood, but no - the developer could not move the driveway. I have a beautiful piece of the truck which I have treated, but it has large cracks in it. I liked your video, although I have CRUSHED TINY STONES. I's not power. I'm hoping to mix it with some gold dust. I understand the repetition of the crushed stone and glue, and you are sanding it. However, I do not know how to sand, or what to use. I think we have hand sanders somewhere in the garage, but could you clarify that please? Seems like with all the information, social media, and people in the world, it should be easier to get help. A big problem is that I can't just "pick it up" cuz it takes both my husband and myself to turned it from one side to the other. It's heavy.

The crushed turquois is just sanded and finished. I did not add any color to it per say. The finish added a little warmth of yellow to the project typically.
