I, too, would recommend the DR paints. Many years ago I bought a tin that included a brush, 5 watercolor pencils, an eraser and 10 colors. The tin broke right away but the colors are lovely and the pencils a nice touch. The set was called "artists' selection" and I got it for an insanely cheap 'closeout' price online. I almost didn't buy them because I thought "you get what you pay for" but how wrong I was. I'm loving your reviews! Thanks for sharing.

+lansing street blues Thanks! I had the same experience as you. I didn't expect a lot for this very low price, but indeed, how wrong I was! Isn't that awesome?! I can't get this paint anywhere near me, but if I could, I'd certainly buy it. It's got some pretty neat colours in its palette, so it's a definite recommend from me!

Thanks for this very nice informative demo and product testing Mandy. In fact i got this product few months back and i really liked it a lot. Lately i found myself needing to upgrade to a better level of paints and to expand my palette to include other colours, so i got Daler-Rowney Artists' Watercolours and i tried it and i can summarize what i think of it by saying really big WOOW. The colours are so vibrant, highly pigmented, very pliable and yield gorgeous results when mixing with eachother. The distinctive thing of Daler-Rowney Artists' Watercolour is their highly pigment content in them which gives strong vibrant colours that flow very easily. And in order to get the same colour strength you need to take more brush fulls from other brands. I truly love them.

I really like the DR pallet - mine is quite old now... when they were sold under the name Georgan Watercolours. Mine has a little latch on the hinge so that the mixing area can be removed for rinsing - do they still have that? I still prefer it over my Cotman sketch box for some reason although I fill both from what ever tube colours I am currently using. I think DR Aquafine are probably much improved over the old Georgan watercolour which where a bit chalky from what I remember and took a lot of scrubbing to liberate much fresh paint.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review! I recently bought a small set of Schmincke (and absolutely adore them!) but then decided I needed a larger range of colors to truly launch into the world of watercolor. As I can't afford any more Schmincke right now I've been looking for an affordable, good quality kit to work with for now. Love your review of the Daler Rowney paints. I have the set of 10 Aquafine in a small tin. Beautiful very highly pigmented paint. Dale Rowney Artists Watercolours are available in hues and the more expensive real pigments and my theory is that the Aquafine range is actually the same paint as the budget friendly hues in the Artist's range but it's just my opinion. My Daler Rowney Aquafine Ultramarine is as strongly coloured as my tube of Winsor and Newton professional watercolour. That makes me very happy. Aquafine is much cheaper.

Aquafines were my first watercolours many years ago. bought the Pebeo paints for the metal box and the pans. Tried the paints but threw them in the bin. I use DR artists quality paints, they are very nice.
@MandyvanGoeije8 жыл бұрын
Ah, so the Aquafines were really bad back then too? That is really sad to hear. I own a great set of Pébéo gouache paint that is really wonderful. So I kinda hoped that this was perhaps a made-in-china one off. But apparently it isn't. Too bad. I think Pébéo should invest in a better studio quality watercolor paint because this set really muds their name...
@terencemolloy18277 жыл бұрын
The Aquafines used to be branded under the name "Georgian Watercolours". They're pretty decent for student paints. It was the Pebeos that I thought were rubbish. Not even worth keeping to doodle with. Ikept the metal box and emptied the pans. I filled them will Holbein artists paints.
@OneTrueWord19885 жыл бұрын
Terence Molloy: I bought the Pebeo also (before seeing this,) and yes, they are really bad! But I have a suggestion for paint that is less than satisfactory: I use it for stamping. Works great, and doesn't go to waste. Have a great day!

I just put the Sennelier review online and I always thought that Sennelier might be competition for Schmincke Horadam, but it's not (see the review!). @MandyvanGoeije8 жыл бұрын
+Sparkling-icetea I can't make that decision for you, but I teach as well and I can say that the pleasure in painting goes up with the use of good paints and especially good paper. So if someone can afford it, I think it's always worth it. And it's not even necessary to jump to artist quality. Paints like Van Gogh, Cotman and this Daler and Rowney are not too expensive and really, really good. Should you decide to move up in quality, will you let me know what you think? I'm very curious!
@hunnybean2698 жыл бұрын
+Mandy van Goeije that is true, and thank you so much for your review videos they're great help. I'll porbably get the paint sometime next year after I developed my art skills.
@MandyvanGoeije8 жыл бұрын
:-) That's really great! But might I suggest you get those paints NOW? Because, you see, developing your art skills really does go a lot better and faster with good stuff. Working with mediocre supplies highly greatens the risk of quitting... A bad workman always blames his tools, they say. But in this case, up to a point, the tools really are to blame sometimes....

Thanks for the review!! People are still watching in 2018 lol. After watching your review and Marty Owings' review, I have officially been convinced to purchase the Daler Rowney Aquafine WC....the colors that you swatched just look so gorgeous and intense..tbh I don't get why so many people bash them so much. I did like the Van gogh wc set as well so I will be getting both of them (DR Aquafine 24 set + Van gogh 12 set) but I have always been considering getting the Mission Gold Watercolor set (7 mL- 24 tubes for $40) but I'm not completely sure on that bc of the contradicting reviews I have watched. Some say that they are amazing while others bash on them bc of their "fugitive, fading qualities" and expensive price. I can justify getting the aquafine and van gogh bc for that price, the quality is amazing, especially since they are student grade wc but the mission gold is supposed to be artist grade and I have heard disturbing things about them. Are the mission gold WC worth the price (p.s. Idk if this is the pure pigment set...it is 24 tube colors for 7 mL and no palette)? Do they fade a lot? If I do get them, is it okay to sell them (based on how lightfast they are). If they are not worth it, what WC brand is affordable and reliable? Thanks for your time!! Your reviews and videos are very encouraging for self-taught artists like me...they have encouraged me to consider art as a career despite the challenges!

I had the same problem with the lid, trying to claw it open too, until I figured out that you just press the tab on the bottom portion of the box, and the lid pops open by itself. It's branded differently here in Canada, here they call it "Simply" Watercolour Pocket Set, it comes in a blue and white paper box. This paint retails here for $15.98CAD. I wasn't a big fan of the brush that came with it, too stiff for me. I prefer a squirrel brush for watercolor, it holds a lot more water, I just ordered a kolinsky sable brush set from somewhere's in Russia, twiddling my thumbs waiting patiently till they arrive...perhaps I'll prefer those more than the squirrel brushes.
