[Tutorial] Automatic Mining Script by Kezeslabas - Basics

This is my very first video that I ever made to KZbin. I'm sorry about the poor quality of the video, and my bad English.
This is a tutorial video about how to use my Automatic Mining Platform script in the game, Space Engineers.

Hey, thanks! I did the mining manually too at first, but after the 5th manual station I got bored of it and decided to automate it. The result was a script, that worked out really well, so I polished it a bit then here we go. I'm glad that it's working well for others too! :)

Leaving this for the new ones stumbling upon this glorious piece of work If you setup a rotor at the base of the crane don't label it as part of the /Mine 01/ instead make it accessible to a custom turret controller to make it last longer by giving it the ability to swivel and dig whenever maximum depth is reached without having to dismantle or modify it, but only if you're collecting rocks to process into iron, silicon and nickel.

Man, I just started playing Space Engineers recently and I'm really, really impressed with how easy it is to mine with your script. Basically I started my game with 1 horizontal piston and 1 vertical piston having to change position from time to time and this is extremely boring and tiring. Hey, thanks! I would say the making of the video took around 50 hours, but half of it was me experimenting with different recording, video editing a sound editing softwares, since this is the first video that I ever made. The other half was the writing of the structure, recording the scenes, the sound and the editing. In total, I've spent a whole week working on this as I remember.

Love this, I am Building Thunderbirds 2 Plane with 5 Pods, I incorporated this into One pod, Open Roof, Stand up Mast, Hit START on the block and away it goes, Love it. I can drop these anywhere and leave them. (Pod 1 is Mobile Base, Pod 2 your Miner, Pod 3 if I can get it working just because I have a P.A.M Mining system as well, Pod 4 is a Grinder, drop it near a salvage and grind huge pieces as a time, thinking Pod 5 will be a fold-out Welding Wall.)

Hey, I'm glad that you think that! :) You can use the script in any environment. There is nothing that would stop you if you want to use it in space. :D

@@theextreme3151 Well, it's hard to say, because the different modded Drills could have different properties, like size or drilling area. The script will uses the Drills anyways, but the efficiency and speed of the Mining may not be optimal, because the script got optimized for the default Drills. Also, in some cases the drills could stuck. You can avoid this if you use Unique Piston Step Lengths, that you can enable and set inside the script.

Not understanding the set command with relation to horizontal and vertical pistons. I've tried moving them with the set command, I don't understand the "amount of movement" per step, 2, 4, 6, 8....and so on. For instance, say I set "set;12", how do I know how much that's going to move a single vertical and horizontal piston from the "home/set position"?

the script is complete but im having a slight issue, when I start the programable block using the start agrument the drill turns on for 5 seconds doesn't move then turns off. Then the programable block says its 100% full when there is nothing in the connected cargo container. Am I missing something? -edit: nevermind I got it to work thanks so much works great!

Could you give me a super dumbed down version of why the script is necessary opposed to having rotor+ piston velocities harmonized? Is it able to detect when the drills are/are not in contact with voxel? This system looks awesome by the way. Found it while browsing things relevant to my most recent drill construct

The purpose of the script, is to be able to set up a Mining Platform fast with any number of Pistons and Drills, and after you started it, you could leave it and do other stuff while the mining is in progress. If you would set the speeds and stuff manually, you would have to go back and reverse your rotor, do some calculations, manage the pistons, etc... multiple times. It's possible to set up a system that you can leave there with timers, but it's not really movable, so you would have to set it up from zero all the time if you make a new platform, which is relatively time consuming. (I've done it multiple times, before I decided to write a script instead.) With the script, after you built your platform, you just have to rename the blocks then run it with the "set" then the "start" command and it works.

I have been using this since it came out (or at least near to) and I am soooo shocked this has never made it to the top of the work shop items. This is the first thing i rush to build when starting a new save. Its bitter sweat with how fast you can get resources and takes away a lot of survival aspects but BOY do i have hours of endless searching and mining resource nodes for Iron, Silicon and Nickel. I think since using this i may mine the occasional node of Iron but i have not had to search out nodes for silicon and nickel. I like to build these on a shallow Cobalt node if possible early on if playing on a mod like progression resources so I can leave Earth fairly early.

Hey! I made this script for myself in the first palce, but I'm glad that so many people likes it! :D I don't mind if it's not a top item, it's still amazing that so many of you are using it... :D I also build this first when I start a game, it makes your life so much easier. You can focus on building and progressing, instead of endless grinding. Also, I don't feel like that the script is overpowered, because you still have to find a good spot and build the platform, and that needs effort. I also like to build it to near cobalt, it helps you so much. :D I found that starting with an Iron deposit is quite good too, since you can trade away steel plates and large steel tubes for good money, and buy ores or components to fill the gap from stations.

Well, the script can handle only one Platform at a time, but you can use multiple Platforms in the same grid, if you place another Programmable Block and you use a different Main Tag for the other Platform.

Well, you would have to handle hinges yourself, but outside of that, it would work i think :D

What is the maximum radius of one vertical piston aka max depth of one horizontal? If you put several of those next to each other, what would be the maxe depth and width you could achiev?

For me, usually a pretty deep hole works nicely, like where I use 5-6 Vertical pistons in total. When I use more than that, then the drills wobble too much, and sometimes they get destroyed. Horizontally, the limit is smaller, because of the rotor's limitations, but I usually go with 1-2 Horizontal Pistons. I've used 3 a couple of times, and that worked most of the time without issue, but I did notice, that sometimes the rotor is buggy and it stops turning the rotating arm, even though it's properly set to rotate by the script. This occures more frequently with 3+ horizontal pistons. The script can handle any number of Pistons, but for game physics stability reasons, I would say Horizontally max 3 is the recommended, and Vertically max 6, but it can depend on the design you built. :D

@@kezeslabas9137 Thanks for the answers. So downwards with 5 i am within a safe margin and sideways with upto 3. Well making an underground base seems to need some special efforts then =) I found a mining laser mod which i will try out to get maybe precise and formost larger areas dugg out, but not sure yet that would be the solution as depending on settings it seems that one just diggs special ores out. Then there is a mining nanite mod which builds up on the nanite repair mod, but it does only rectangular squares. I will find a solution eventually :)

set;4 and set;6 are doing the same function, set;4 should retract the horizontal piston to the start, but it is doing the same function as Set;6. This is repeated also on set; 12 and 14. I'm a layman in the game, but I've tested each Set and those I've pointed out do the same thing.

No, you can change the max and min limit of the rotation in the Custom Data of the Programmable Block. :D

The stopping if inventory is full is a nice feature :) Other than that this thing can be built much easier using sensor blocks or timer blocks. Since you can sense subgrids you can simply put a sensor on the piston and that way you get a signal once it it extended/retracted and you can build your system using that mechanic. More flexible too since you can store it as a blueprint and it will work right out of the box without any setting up. Would be nice to have that "stop when full" feature tho.

Hey! Yeah, it's a pretty useful one! :) Yeah, it's possible to make something with Timers and Sensors and it works just fine. :D I made this script for myself then decided to polish and publish it, so others could use it as well. As far as I know you can make a working Mining Platform in creative and save the blueprint too, and the names will be correct and the Programmable block's script should be there if you want to place the blueprint or weld it up. I like this script, because it works with any combination of Pistons and Drills, and calculates the optimal extensions and retractions automatically, so I think it's a bit easier to set it up if you want more complicated systems. But, it doesn't means that you must have to use it. Building a Mining Platform with Sensors and Timers could be pretty fun! :D

Yeah, I guess it is faster to just rename pistons than to calculate all the timings/set up all the sensors :) Btw, if you’re looking to enhance the platform/script you could look into making a drill platform which automatically extends the drill. Hey! Where did you change the name for the script? You have to change it in the Custom Data of the Programmable Block and use the SET command to change it, otherwise it won't be registered.

Hey, it's still working :D It's possible to go 100m deep with it as the script can handle any number of pistons, but the longer you go, the more unstable the actual mining arm is. The drills can be destroyed because of the long piston arm's wobbling, so there is a practical limit of how long of an arm you can use.

Ha hozzáadod, akkor amint lekapcsolod a connector-t, a script be fog crash-elni, mert egy olyan blokk-ot próbál elérni, ami már nem része a grid-nek és ezt a program nem tudja kezelni. Egy új verzión már dolgozom egy ideje, ahol ez már meg van oldva. Ha kész lesz, talán működne amit mondasz :D

Yea, eventually... xD I want to make an other video about this mining platform script, and it would be nice to do some intro videos for some of the ships that I want to release to the workshop. It would be fun to make a playthrough video series as well. I will work on these when I find enough free time for it. :D Right now I'm quite bussy with my studies, I'm doing two semesters at the same time, so I don't know when it is going to happen. I love Space Engineers tho, so I'm pretty sure that eventually something is gonna happen with this channel too. :D

Yeah, sure, you can add as many as you want, the script can handle it. What limit's you tho is the physics of the game, like if you add too many, the rotor may not be able to turn that much weight, but up to 4-5 Horizontal pistons I think the structure should work.

Sadly, no. Xbox doesn’t have the computational power to run scripts, mods, etc. and has a very low block cap. Meaning you can’t build much. Sorry man.

Yes. If you are firmly attached to the surface with landing gear, it works on asteroids, however is harder to align.
