Dude your instructions were spot on! thanks for making this so incredibly easy! everything worked. I would add an edit however. Tell people to back up their storage with a separate file. Going to settings > system > back up restore. This makes sure to get all the settings and capture gallery and other things that uploading to the cloud doesn't back up.

I replaced the 500GB hard drive to a 2TB. I followed your instructions to the tee. I get to the reboot and install the new system update, and it keeps telling me that the update can't be found. Please help. Update: After I realized that I installed the 300MB file (it's easy to get confused with there being three links) instead of the 900MB file, I corrected the error and the system has been updated and the gaming has begun. Thank you! The new firmware (4.50 - as of March 2017) does everything for you. It detects the new drive, realizes it needs to be updated and asks you to toss the USB drive containing the 800 mb update on there. Thing is, if you have a chubby usb stick, it won't fit into the slot - you'd need an extension cable to do so! I used a 1 terabyte sshd drive and I ended up with 861 gb after the required system stuff on it....

@@LeksandSupport I got a 2tb blue western digital. More reliable but now I'm being more safe because the last 2 hdd's broke on me. So I recommend keeping 500gb if you don't play alot. If you play a lot like me I'd keep 600+ gb of free space. I've lost my data twice so I'm taking precautions. I'm not a hdd expert but since my hdds broke twice im just saying that.

Thank you so much for this video. I wanted a 1TB PS4 but didn't want it in black or any colour that was available so I bought the silver 500GB (couldn't get gold anywhere so silver second choice). I have never used a screwdriver in my life and don't know anything about electronics, I also never comment on youtube videos, but just wanted to let you know your instructions were crystal clear and nothing confused me or made me panic during the process because you had already warned us of things like the internal HD not fitting the tray, the software download onto the USB and so on. I went to authorised Sony service centre and they told me that this PS4 is not repairable. They got me a 50% discount to buy a new PS4 as it was only 2 years old. Never been dropped, never spilled anything etc... one day I got a error code ce-36329-3 and I couldn’t put my PlayStation in safe mode. Took it to a computer store and they said $130 to fix it. I went on Amazon and bought a 1TB Toshiba internal hard drive for $50. Followed these steps and my PlayStation is back working. I been searching alot on a solution on how to do this and more specifically how to completly remove the partition table and start completly fresh with a new formatted drive. If you are trying to find a solution to this and can't figure out why applications won't format PS4 protective drive and your hard drive is just either bricked or badly curropted then this tutorial is for you. Generally this tutorial is used for people that have almost like a dead hard drive in other words the safe mode built into the PS4 won't even work or you can't access any bios repair function from the system. So I just want to share what I have learned. The Playstation drives have what is called a GPT file system on it which stands for GUID Partition Table which is a Protective file system. Generally these types of file systems use like over 20 partition tables on the drive. That is why many users are running into trouble trying to format this type of hard drive because most systems and applications will not allow you to format this type of disk drive. It is encripted and protected. Something I figured out is what you need to do is "remove the Protective partition" GPT before you can use partition recovery software to sucesfully format the drive. In order to do this you must use the "Diskpart Utility" This is autmatically embedded in windows and you can run the tool directly from the command prompt. It is a powerful tool that over rides any other application and removes the partition even though its locked or protected. The steps are as follows: 1. Open a Command Line Tool, type in DiskPart and Press Enter 2. At the diskpart prompt type "list disk". ... 3. At the diskpart prompt, type "select disk x", where x is the disk number that you want to remove the protective partition. 4. Type “list partition” which will display a listing of all the partitions on the selected disk. 5. Type “select partition n” (where “n” is the partition number you want to have removed). 6. Finally, Type “delete partition override” which will then permanently delete the partition selected. This will allow your drive to no longer be locked by windows and if you look in the disk management, the disk should now say "unnalocated space" in which you can proceed to format it with a fat32 or exfat file system to be ready to run on your PS4 again. Or if you prefer a NTFS to run on your windows Operatying system. Note: In order to find the disk number, usually its listed in disk management but if your operating system is not able to identify it due to serously bad curroption of the drive, this may be a bit tricky so you want to download MiniTool partition wizard which will allow you to see the drive and what Number is designated for that drive. Hope this proved valuable for anyone that has had alot of difficulty figuring this out.

What happens if you put a 2TB SSD hard drive into the ps4 slim and then boot it up without going to the Sony website

It won't affect the warranty...Sony would not make it easy to change the HDD if it did plus they did made it easy on PS4 cuz they knew people would need it.

This helped me fix my playstation as it wasnt starting up and was stuck in a safe mode loop but just take the hard drive out clean it put it back in and initialize your playstation

yes and no you can but the hdd are married to the mobo so you are forced to reformat once you do so their is no real benefit unless the one in your current ps4 is bigger

You saved me a lot of headache, thought I was gonna have to buy a T8 torx screwdriver, but this was easy to do. Took the 860 evo ssd I had in my computer, formatted it to exFAT and got it into the ps4 without too much screaming lol

with the 4.0 update, you can now transfer everything from one ps4 to another by connecting an ethernet between the two and then choosing the right option

no, just like in the ps3, the ps4 will automatically format the HDD regardless of which HDD you put in it. Do NOT put your previous ps4 HDD in the slim unless you want to lose everything on that drive.

+TheSherlockHokage Really, I would have thought Sony would have done it to stop piracy like what they did on ps3, either way, at least they gave us the option to transfer through an ethernet cable like what they did on ps3. but have you yourself ever taken the HDD out of a ps4 and tried putting it into another system and have it boot up with all of your previous stuff?

+TheSherlockHokage just read up that you can use as many hard drives in one console as long as you use the same psn account, unfortunately, you can't use the same drive from the old ps4 to the slim one because it has information about the serial number and other info about the previous console and when you switch the hdds, the ps4 slim will automatically format and add the info about that system instead. maybe it's a bit too complicated but it's the best I can do to explain how it works.
