Ed! I've tried to understand double exposure, and tried a bunch on my own, and nothing helped me understand it the way this video did. Thank you for keeping it simple. Now I'm all excited to go shoot more, and I know I won't feel so defeated.

Just getting back into film, and now into double exposures. This is the best and most useful explanation I’ve seen yet, particularly about the light and dark, and using black and white film to emphasise the point. Thank you.

Excellent Eduardo! Understanding the "white" effect is key. The first girl & tree was my fav, she doesn't seem very happy... I do night photography so we do layers for a composite. In fact I did one last night. The Christmas tree was blowing-out the Nutcracker figurines set-up next to the tree so I metered & shot them separate, then stacked them in PS. Safe Travels!

i once tried to do some double exposures. I have an Argus C3 Matchmatic, a camera you have to remember to advance the film after each shot otherwise you'll accidentally use the same frame for a second exposure. Neither did I know I had to shoot with -1EV or use the white and black for better effect. However, I got one nice picture. My FM2 allows multiple exposures. I'll try it again following your advice. Thanks for the video.

Hey Eduardo, you've helped me through about five rolls of film with my Minolta X-700 in the last two months or so. It's really satisfying shooting with film again lol. I was wondering, will you do a video of the best way to display photos in a portfolio or gallery/home setting? Like if there is a certain way to display portraits, black and white, etc and if they should be matte or gloss finish, etc? Thank you 💖❤️

¡Excelente video, Ed! ;)

Wonderful video. First, let me understand... you shoot on film, enlarge, then scan the print into Lightroom? Second, if I want to do this on my enlargement, and I don’t want to use Lightroom, I must dodge the unwanted information out to the extreme, yes? Thank you for your willingness to share your experiments and expertise with us!
@edpavez
@edpavez 6 жыл бұрын
No, I shoot the film, develop it, scan it and throw it on Lightroom. At no point I print with an enlarger. That would be extremely expensive and time consuming and would render to be impossible to post videos weekly, unless uploading videos would be the only thing I did. Hahhaa

Thanks a lot for the video ! I do have a question when you say -1 EV , do you mean it’s adding more light ? Because -1 is to add Light and +1 is to reduce light ... 400-1 = 800. 400+1 =200 . And I am 100% correct it’s how it works on film and a lot of people confuse 400-1 = 200 which is wrong !! So what do you mean by -1 EV ??? Thank you!!
@edpavez
@edpavez 5 жыл бұрын
No, you got it backwards: EV is calculated as EV = log2 (F2/(ISO * s)) meaning -1 EV is one stop less of light. It's not about "adding light", it's about lowering the exposure. Here's how it works: If you have correct exposure at EV0, in order to *maintain* a correct exposure at EV-1 you need to add a stop to some parameter (f/8 to f/5.6; 1/500 to 1/250; ASA 200 to ASA 400). I guess that's what confused you. But in this case, if you have correct exposure at EV0, when I say go EV-1 without compensating, that simply means lowering one stop to a parameter (f/8 to f/11; 1/500 to 1/1000; ASA 200 to ASA 100).

For everyone who is using 35mm Film cameras: to take multiple exposures you need to push and hold a button at the bottom of the cameras and rewind once. (Normally you push this button when the end of the film is reached so you unlock the possibility to rewind the whole film. ) It is not a very exact thing as sometimes the Film is still moved a Little but it works even with the cheapest camera.
@edpavez
@edpavez 6 жыл бұрын
The issue is: not every 35mm has a rewind button, and there’s no way to rewind the frame exactly, because the wind moves different amounts of film, depending on where in the roll you are (beginning, middle or end). So I would highly suggest getting a 35mm camera that allows for double exposures, instead of trying this (the Canon A-1, for example, can do it!).

Yes. Thank you! A really good video, more of these tutorial kind of videos :) One would be nice of color correcting a color scan in photoshop/lightroom. Now i use Vuescan to scan my rolls as a linear scan. Then ColorPerfect plugin in Photoshop and select a correct filmtype for the inversion process. I get lots of gray and grain in that process so would be nice to see a different workflow also :)
