To remove that fringe of lights in volume fog, you have to set the step length value less than 2 in medium setting. It will take longer to render but fix the issue. Same with alpha textures on polygons.

would you know a workaround when using emissive materials? I've uncheck "visible on specular" but the halo of the light ball (sphere) is still visible

If you don't want to see the light in the scene you just uncheck "camera visibility" in the visibility tab on the light. Turning off the specular will get rid of highlights.

Christopher Middleton Uncheck “camera visibility” the light itself will disappear but the fringe still shows up in the fog. Because the photons scattering in the fog. So if scatter’s V value in medium is high enough, the fringe will more blurry.

when I do this the stuff inside my box disappears

With the box method, would I have to bind the box to my camera if I were to animate the camera in a larger scene? Or does it look fine if the camera were to go through to the inside of the box?

I'm actually not sure, I've never tried that. Might have to do a little render test and see what happens!

this makes zero sense. WHY, would I want to disable specular....
