Whitney, never apologize for troubleshooting out loud when you’re making these types of videos for us. That is exactly what any sewist would do when “Frankenstein-ing” two (or more) patterns together. I talk to myself all the time in my sewing room and I don’t have an audience!!! It is such a bonus learning moment when you show us how you think things out in order to make the two patterns come together. This was an excellent video and one that I’ve been anxiously awaiting since you mentioned that it would be next in the Sunday Tutorial lineup! I own and have made both the Arlington (for myself) and the Dockside (for husband and son) and would never in a million years have put them together. I LOVE a johnny collar and this one is going to be a must sew for me (at least once or twice…) Great “mash-up”, Whitney! ❤

You are a real sewer! I laughed when you said "go back to were it was good". I hope your daughter is as appreciative of all the thinking and effort that goes into the things you make her as we viewer's are.

I love this kind of tutorial video, thank you. I also love that you have to think about what you're doing when you're going off piste from the pattern, never apologise, it helps us to know why you've chosen the option you have. I have the Arlington pattern and plan to sew it up next when I have completed the tops I am making at present. No idea which of the necklines I will choose, it may depend on how much fabric I have.

You make this look so easy. Love the collar and placket. WOW beautiful.. How do you know how much to cut for the neck binding? Did you do 85 or 90% because it's knit? Sorry for the question, but I'm not sure.
@TomKatStitchery2 жыл бұрын
The pattern includes a pattern piece for this binding so I just used that!

I had plans to make an almost identical top for this winter, inspired by a RTW top I saw. I bought the Style Arc Bert top pattern for it, but I'm nervous about doing the placket with their little instructions. I'm hoping this tutorial will be of use for it! Thank you!

I've made the Bert and I think this would be VERY similar!

Lovely top, your daughter is very lucky. Can you tell me what kind of paper you use to print your patterns?
@TomKatStitchery2 жыл бұрын
I have been trying out newsprint, but I'm not crazy about it. Typically, I just use the cheapest printer paper I can find because it's usually the thinnest.

Another great tutorial, thank you ! Question: You sewed this knit fabric with a straight 3.0mm stitch. I thought that we should only be using a small zigzag stitch on knits in order for the stitches not to pop up ???
@TomKatStitchery2 жыл бұрын
The only thing I used the straight stitch for was the neckline and the placket. This is because this area does not need to stretch so these stitches aren't in danger of popping. The rest of the top was put together with the serger so that it would stretch without popping stitches.
@celestestricklin15572 жыл бұрын
Very nice! What are the wires that wrap over the foot of your sewing machine? is that some sort of guide?
@TomKatStitchery2 жыл бұрын
It's a finger guard. Because the industrial is so fast it can sew through your finger if you're not careful 😬.

Questions: I am wanting to do the Arlington with full sleeves and shirring at the wrist. I've got the long straight sleeve printed.. Would I lengthen the sleeves for this? How much width would be good to add to the sleeves? How much does shirring take up? I enjoyed this hack video, as I do all of yours.
@TomKatStitchery2 жыл бұрын
I would at least double the width of the sleeve to get a good shirred cuff. As far as lengthening it, I would just add the length of the cuff to the sleeve pattern and you should be good!
@patgottshalk88082 жыл бұрын
Great tutorial for the placket. I heard you talk.about having the interfacing on top when you sew. Did you say that it helps to minimize stretching? Thanks for the wonderful content you share.
@TomKatStitchery2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Let the feed dogs do the work of moving the stretchy side of the fabric through and you will get less pulling and pinching.

Ya know Whitney, I would love to see a process video putting a zipper on a mock turtle (or a bit higher). I bought a merino long sleeve with a zip neck (zipper is about 8-9 inches?) in NZ a few years ago and I love the option of zipping it but mostly wear it like a collar. I like the way it looks and have been thinking about making it. I don’t have a pattern that does this. A pattern reco would be good too, if you know of one.
@Queenread822 жыл бұрын
Like the Stanton quarter zip but not a sweatshirt.
@TomKatStitchery2 жыл бұрын
I love that idea! So it would be like a nice sweater instead of a sweatshirt. Let me think on that, but I think I could put something together!
