Jan West Thanks :) I find vellejo a bit to thin but I use it on tools/wood and faces. I personally find Tamiya a very nice consistency when thinned down a bit; it seems to cover easier and levels really nice. But I've yet to really experiment with other brands :D

Thanks for the great vids! What's your trick when doing tamiya paint over tamiya paint in layers? Whenever I use tamiya paint over other tamiya paint, the first paint layer starts to roll/ball up or come off. It seems that's an issue with tamiya paints...I haven't quite figured it out, I've tried x20a, laquer, water, and straight paint. yet I always have a problem with tamiya paint coming back off.
@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 7 жыл бұрын
I guess I did thin layers and didn't really brush it on as much as it did let it flow from the paintbrush. I work very delicately. I haven't painted a figure in forever though, but I will again soon, so I'm a bit rusty with all that.

well done. Really helps me get ready for a diorama I plan to do which will have around 14 figures in tanks, a truck, and on the ground. Hi Panzermeister36, I am new and from the date of your video... very late. That being said I am wondering if there may be a better way of highlighting the collar accouterments and unit insignia. I am yet to try this method but I was thinking ...what about base coat painting the unit insignia white as you have done (but not in such fine detail as you did) ....then paint the shirt collar then using ultra fine sanding sponge sand the insignia until the white comes through...anyway just a thought...I will try it and see what happens....Thanks for the video

Two questions. Are you thinning down the Tamiya paint with X20A (a lot) when you brush it on? And are you thinning the Vallejo (and with what)? I have all of the paint you're using so I may try to mimic this as a learning study.
@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 9 жыл бұрын
I thinned the Tamiya paints with the Tamiya Lacquer thinner (yellow cap) as I find it works better than X-20 which is pretty much just isopropyl alcohol. I don't thin it much, I just mix up the paint on a piece of plastic, then drop my brush in the thinner and swirl it around in the paint. Paint some more, then if it's starting to seem thick, I drop my brush in the thinner again and mix it around in the paint. Probably 1/3 thinner to 2/3 paint. I just do it by eye though. The Vallejo was not thinned.

Hwat arr your thoughts on dragon 1/35 figures i recently bought 2 kits and they seem amazingly well detailed and they even have their swastika and eagle badge in pe but i dont know they seem a bit too good for me to build and paint them you know like they are waaaaaay out of my skill league
@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 6 жыл бұрын
Dragon figures are usually about as good as they come in plastic...above them in resin figures from guys like Alpine. This guy here is a Dragon guy and he looks very good. I don't see why they would be too good, since if you're going to practice you might as well do so on a well-detailed figure with all the details you'll need to paint on a "better" figure once you advance your skills. It will give you an idea of what to expect and will give you more opportunities to practice painting little details on figures.

Thanks for the video. Whenevrer I've used Tamiya paint, it always became encrusted on the figure and looks awful. How much thinner should one add to prevent this?
@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 6 жыл бұрын
You probably want to try adding some retarder to make it dry slower. But also, make sure you thin with about 50 to 60% thinner, maybe more if you need.

Btw I checked that cobblestone street you made. That's from Celluclay or something like that right? I also use that usually on top of styrene sheets or cheap wood. When you sprinkle grass, do you airbrush it before or after painting the Celluclay? I'm researching ideas for my next project of a King Tiger in the Ardennes 1944. Got any leads? Model is a Dragon King Tiger ( henshel ) + Verlinden Engine parts. Dunno for infantry though, the kit came with some 4 Volksgrenadiers
@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 9 жыл бұрын
The street was made from "Scuptamold" which is basically very liquidy plaster. A thick Plaster of Paris should work too. I didn't sprinkle the grass here - it was a store bought grass mat from Hobby Scene. However I would paint the base dark brown, then sprinkle the grass, then spray with a lighter brown, and then drybrush with a light beige if it were a winter setting because the grass would not be green. If it were a non-winter setting, I'd paint the base, then sprinkle the grass (assuming its prepainted green) and then drybrush with light green over the grass. Sprinkle the grass onto diluted white glue, and also keep in mind that scenery looks a lot more realistic with gentle slopes of hills, so you can make those with a bit of clay or plaster. Even the tiniest variation in the surface height makes it look so much better! What kind of ideas do you mean; like diorama setup? Definitely check out any Dragon Gen2 figs because they are beautifully detailed! How are the Grenadiers that came in the kit?
@byrnespeed
@byrnespeed 9 жыл бұрын
Panzermeister36 Those are Gen 2 figures but I'm more used to the Verlinden production ones, The sad part is that you can't really mix those 2 because ( I'm sure you know or noticed it ) the VP figurines are a tad bigger on 1:35 scale so if you put a dragon figurine next to a VP one, it pops right away. I haven't been modeling for years and I just re-started today so I have to do a huge clean up and do a couple of spreadsheets of what I have and what I need. I doubt that those woodland scenics moss and stuff are still good, my garage is full. I have around 30-40 unopened boxes most of em are Dragon's, its my favorite compagny for armors, they have so much more details than Tamiya. I don't know if they improved in the last 10 years but those I have all include Magitracks and photo etched parts details and infantry figurines with them. Those are the ones that camed with the King Tiger 1944 Ardennes kit.www.google.ca/search?q=Dragon+Volksgrenadier&espv=2&biw=1400&bih=941&tbm=isch&imgil=uOmEIRKrE6A8wM%253A%253BGfg5IZc1YwfV6M%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.aliexpress.com%25252Fstore%25252Fproduct%25252FDragon-6115-1-35-German-Volksgrenadier-352d-Division-Ardennes-44-4-Figures%25252F314824_1142720079.html&source=iu&pf=m&fir=uOmEIRKrE6A8wM%253A%252CGfg5IZc1YwfV6M%252C_&usg=__dxmjjMd6ypPxItrqKgqOwa8unww%3D&ved=0CCoQyjc&ei=okMJVfTuOMTBggS0vIP4Dw#imgrc=uOmEIRKrE6A8wM%253A%3BGfg5IZc1YwfV6M%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fi01.i.aliimg.com%252Fwsphoto%252Fv0%252F1142720079%252FDragon-6115-1-35-German-Volksgrenadier-352d-Division-Ardennes-44-4-Figures-.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.aliexpress.com%252Fstore%252Fproduct%252FDragon-6115-1-35-German-Volksgrenadier-352d-Division-Ardennes-44-4-Figures%252F314824_1142720079.html%3B1568%3B973 let me know what you think, thanks forward!

@Panzermeister36 9 жыл бұрын
Tamiya has definitely gotten better with time...but Dragon Smart Kits are still the best IMO too! Yeah those ground foam and moss materials are no long up to par - but I highly recommend Model Scene for scenery products. I also really like Woodland Scenics' 'Fine Leaf Foliage' for making trees and bushes. I've never actually worked with any VP or resin figures but I really hope to soon. I actually wasn't aware of the sizing issue so thanks. What is the plan for the diorama so far? And those figs look super cool with their STGs and G43s...they really look the late-war era. I don't think those are Gen2 though; it's not marked on the box. Gen2 have multi-piece heads and guns and other PE for belts and epaulets.
@byrnespeed
@byrnespeed 9 жыл бұрын
Panzermeister36 They do have multi-piece heads, hollow gun barrels, photo etched stuff, it just camed loose in the box with the tank. They have similar poses to those on the box I linked you. Almost done with the tiger, small details after primer needs do be added. I want to push the research further though, its been so long. So yeah Verlinden and some other resin figures will look bulkier if you put them side by side with a plastic figurine but the detail level is twice what you got with the plastic ones. I think that' why they are bigger to include more small details they can't reproduce from plastic molding. Although its really impressive, comparing what was out when Tamiya launched all their infantry sets. They made 1:35 figurines popular in the late 80's. We have all the choices in the world because of their foresight back then.
@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 9 жыл бұрын
byrnespeed Ah okay I guess it's a retooled or something like that version of the kit you linked. Good luck painting the KT! I t's incredible the amount of detail they can give to resin figures - that's why I want to try some out! Ah the 80's Tamiya figs....I use them as colour testers! I've got the ones from the panzer II F/G but I thin that's actually mid 70's!

Tamiya paints are terrible for brush painting. For airbrush they spray beautifully but the color range is so limited. Tamiya is so far behind other companies when it comes to paint.

Hi Evan, Nice tutorial on the figure - really helped me with one of my dragon figures. Just asking but what do you use to attach the figure to the holder or jar to paint it with accuracy? (Like in this tutorial) Best at modelling Mike :)
@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike! To attach the figure to the base, I used a tiny bit of super glue. It doesn't adhere very well to the glass of the tamiya paint jar to I just put a hobby blade at his boot heel, pushed it between the bottom of the boot and the jar and he popped off no problem!

Panzermeister36 Ahh okay thanks Evan, I will use this tip in the future when painting figures, I've got a few to do actually from Dragon and Tamiya when I get round to it so I'll try it then (got some old jars somewhere anyway)

How did you attach the figure the the paint bottle (Good ideas BTW) did u use superglue or double sided tape or what.
@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 8 жыл бұрын
+Darkguard 21 Super glue is the only thing that attaches to the paint bottle, but still it doesn't attach all that well to the glass so I could just pop him off with a hobby knife in the end

yeah i know 1/35 scale but in video a figur looks bigger than 1/35 scale for me:D All friends I know they all say to me that paint first the flash parts(hands,face) and then paint the face. The face gives u a character for all figure. I am also painting a russian tank crew now. Wich one is the figure(from witch kit) I guess it is dragon?s. Cheers Nejc
@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 9 жыл бұрын
Well he's the same size as all my other 1/35 figures; maybe he just looks big :P Yes usually you should paint the face first, mostly because it is farther down of the layers of the figure (the clothes overlap the skin, so it's easier to work outwards with the layers) but I didn't follow that rule here :) And yes it's a Dragon figure, one from the 'German Fighting Elite in the East' set but I modified his gear a bit. Modern Dragon figures are really good! Good luck on the Russian tank crew, Nejc!

@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 9 жыл бұрын
LacrosseMan0428 Most glues will react with paint. I use Tamiya Extra Thin and it will eat through almost all paints. That's why I glued him all together here before painting. It's a bit harder to paint that way but then the glue is no issue. If i were to glue on parts after painting then I would use a tiny amount of gel super glue so that it doesn't run and eat up the paint where its visible.

@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 8 жыл бұрын
Well the bike doesn't have any little bits like faces that would be a different colour, so I would put the whole thing together before painting. It's the sent thing with tanks, usually you would paint it as a whole except for the tracks which are a different colour so you put then on after paint. Some people will leave off tools and things if they want to paint them like wood and metal but usually they were the same colour as the tank.
