One minor detail you missed is that some primers act as micro fillers, particularly Mr surfacer and alclad primers. Micro-filler primers fill in shallow scratch marks caused by sanding, which makes them ideal for anything you've had to sand to shape. The numbers on Mr surfacer primers are roughly indicative of the grit of sandpaper used to scratch the piece up, Mr surfacer 1000 for example will completely fill scratches from 1000 grit or higher sandpaper.

Just wanted to thank you for all your content and tutorials. I've been spending the past few days researching Gunpla, as I plan to get into Gunpla. Of all of the channels I've found so far, yours in particular has been one of the most the helpful (if not the most helpful) in providing concise, yet comprehensive information.

Thanks for answering question that bothering me all this time that is : primer help paint to stick, but my primer paint gives rough surface and if I sand it some area of the primer might gone. So either I should use levelling thinner to smooth the primer, or paint thicker layer of primer so that when I sand it there is still layer of primer on surface. Any comments or advice?

Say, I gotta ask. Does using cheap spraycan primer like the ones you mentioned have a high chance of causing bleed-through of certain colors? I've had reds bleed through white really badly when I was trying to paint one of my kits causing me to scrap the project altogether. That out of the way, this guide was very informative! Thank you!
@GuntanksInSpace9 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks for the answer! Guess I should look into switching primers. At least Tamiya Spray Primer won't cause that I hope (since that's what we have available where I live). Also, I forgot to mention that it also happens on cheap spraycan clear coats. Had that happen to my Sazabi and the red bled through the decal work.
@streiya8 жыл бұрын
Hi Henry your tutorials are awesome! I noticed you have a tutorial for just about every major aspect of building/painting Gunpla. However, I notice that you don't have a tutorial about "Seal Coating". Do you seal coat your Gunpla or just call it a day after you paint them with lacquer paints? I mainly use Tamiya acrylics to paint my kits and then I use different kinds of sealers depending on what type of look I like flat, semi-gloss, glossy, and clear. Do all sealers come in spray can paints or are there any kind that come in airbrush types (never seen them)? I"ve just recently in the past year have gotten into airbrushing and painting my Gunpla and it would be great to get tips on how to properly apply sealer and maybe show what each different type looks like. I have encountered the issues of sometimes my semi-gloss Tamiya spray sealer leaving my kits slightly sticky afterwards. Is this normal? I myself and I'm sure other of your viewers would appreciate your take on this topic. Would also make for another great tutorial video to add to your collection!

Krylon primer is just terrible, it goes on far too thick to be useful. Avoid it at all cost. Duplicolor sandable primer in automotive section I never had issues with, actually painted my sons one model with it as a main colour and it's held up to him playing with the models.
