I love how you repeat "Don't do it at home!!!" about a hundred times :) :) :) You know that's the first thing every little girl wants to do (and probably will no matter what they're told). Amazing advice as always! Also, I wanted to say that you have so much talent and such a bright future in whatever you decide to do. I can't wait to see what the future holds for you, Katie! xo

Wish my teacher is watch this. She always puts students on pointe whether they are ready or not and a lot of girls really struggle with pointe because of this. I feel that you should at least be 11years old to get on pointe but theres this girls who 9 and just got on pointe. Lucky I researched about pointe before I went on pointe so when I did I was educated and I wasn't has hard. Two weeks after you get pointe shoes my teacher start doing Pirouette when we are not ready.Its really annoying.

Anne Harrison , that's good😄. Yeah, we really do reliy on our teacher. we trust that they know what they are doing but sometimes they can be worng and that's sad. sometimes we need to be smart and take matters into our own hands. Example, I researched about pointe and when I went on pointe I felt ready unlike other girls so sturrgle. Keep up the good work and I hope your feet get better😀.

I assist with teaching basic Pointe and sometimes sub the class when the senior instructor is absent. I appreciate everything you shared. As I've never taken a Pointe class, I still do understand the principle of having a strong ballet technique. All that you have shared is what I explain to the young dancers. So it's wonderful to know that I am on track with really helping their growth. Thank you for this.

I'm at home sick, binge watching your channel. Now I know what went wrong with my pointe work. My teacher wasn't consequent at all, sometimes we had to do very basic excercices, sometimes very difficut ones, even if we lacked proper preparation. Even though I did my best best, I did not feel successful. Now I will start again with another teacher.

My ballet studio has "pointe Wednesdays". We have to wear pointe shoes (or pre-pointe shoes), for at least half of barre. You are allowed to take them off if you would like, but it has strengthened me so much. Just once a week, 1 hour of barre, it is so amazing.

Katryn - the 'rolling through the ball of the foot' has been a game changer for me. I'm an older adult beginner and I have a pretty bad bunion on one foot. I've been working on 'articulating every bone' - it's kind of hard with the problem foot but - the other day I felt my toes contact the floor in places that haven't touched the floor since I was little. I've gotten so much benefit from your videos.

I've been on pointe for seven months after reprising my ballet studies, since quitting dance at my first studio due to a lack of opportunities, and I really appreciate this. Thank you so much for this video Kathryn. Just a note, it has recently been discovered that using the theraband to do releves, is pulling on your joint and when you push it through to pointe it's putting a lot of stress on your foot. Instead of using your theraband, try a ball. Again I loved this video and please keep uploading amazing and insightful content!

Hello Kathryn! I have been dancing for over ten years, I'm 14, and I'm going into pre point very soon. With nutcracker season, I didn't want to add another class to my hectic schedule. Now, I am definitely ready to commit to pre pointe. I've been doing excercises at home to strengthen my feet, and I know that you shouldn't go on pointe not ready. But, I was wondering if there were any tips you have to help strengthen more quickly, resulting in getting on pointe quicker? I'm not sure if you can, but I'd love to hear any advice you have! Thank you!

Eleves and, as she said, rolling through your feet. Foot and ankle strength are critical. I did tons of eleves while training to get on pointe (while watching tv or brushing my teeth). Your teacher should be able to tell when you’re ready. Keep working on strength and you’ll get there!

Hi! I was wondering if you had any tips on getting over your box? I have low arch and flat feet and I am not all the way over on one of my shoes. It make it harder to do turns and can't straighten my knees all the way without my ankles kicking back and not being over the box.
@evelynchang9639
@evelynchang9639 7 жыл бұрын
CraftinLilElephant I have low arches as well and when I first got in pointe I wasn't getting up all the way either. It really helps to bend the shank in your pointe shoe more so that your arch does not have to push against the hard shoe as much. When you go up, just squeeze everything, your legs, calves, butt etc. Try plié ing in pointe and then straightening up while trying to remain over the box.
@2kooldancin
@2kooldancin 7 жыл бұрын
I used to have to cut out about half of my shank because I don't have the most beautiful arches. This helped create less resistance against my natural arch and allowed me to get over on my box. But be careful, you have to have very strong feet because you will not have as much support as you might think. Buena Suerte!
@MariaTkl
@MariaTkl 7 жыл бұрын
There are 3 things to consider! firstly are these pointe shoes right for you? it seems that many people don't know that almost every brand has a more or less lower vamp model ! then it is the strength! you have to build strength to be able to stand correctly ! third it is the amount of time you have spend on that specific pair.. i would recommend breaking the shank but try many slow releves through demi pointe (which will also help you strengthen)

I ahve seen quite a few ballet videos in the past month. My newest obsession even though Im not a dancer. And there's something about you that makes you nicer to watch then all the other ballerinas. They are boring to watch. You have some kind of fluidity in the videos you have posted where you comment how you danced..other dancers looks like have an excellent techniques (i mean obviosuly, they are prima balerinas or whatever it;s called) but when I saw you dance it was more...natural. not forced. and very fluid.

OH MY GOSH WELL FITTING POINTE SHOES ARE SO IMPORTANT LET ME TELL YOU! I've been dancing on pointe for years now and just in the past couple of years I've developed this problem where sometimes when I roll up into releve a tendon or something will shift in one of my toes and I come crashing down because of the sharp pain that this shift causes. I had no idea what I had changed to cause this to happen because I have never had this happen before but I finally realized what was going on watching this video. I wear Gaynor Mindens and I usually buy them online because I know what size fits me perfectly and can special order them but the last time I got a pair I went to the local dance store and bought them there because I needed shoes quickly. They didn't have shoes in my size with a high heel and hard shank so I got a low heel instead because, as stated before, I didn't have time to special order them. Because the heel was too low, I ended up unconciously skipping part of my roll through when rising up in order to keep my shoes from slipping off my feet. Because of this unconcious change in technique, I have been unable to really work on anything substantial for months now. I cannot stress this enough: please Please PLEASE do not think you can work with a pair of ill-fitting pointe shoes. It doesn't work like that. Also, shank strength is really important. I used to get cramps in my arches from wearing too soft a shank until I switched to hard shanks. Don't do that to yourself. Just get the righy shoes.

Thanks for this video, very helpful :) I have questions for your next Q&A, unless you're planning on a separate"getting en pointe for recreational dancers" -video. 1) Have you got specific bench marks you think a dancer should reach before considering pointe? How many relevees, how many pirouettes...? 2) How do you feel about soft blocks for feet strengthening for getting en pointe? 3) Is it good to do the latter part of your feet & pointe strengthening workout just going on demi-pointe in ballet shoes if you're not ready for pointe shoes yet, or will that teach your muscles and nervous system an incorrect movement pattern, and therefore best to leave the latter part for when you're actually in pointe shoes? Bonus question, any recommendations for adult beginner recreational dancers when it comes to upgrading to pointe? (Maybe just forget about it, leave it to the professionals... :D ) Thank you so much, this channel is amazing! Emma

OMG I am so glad that I am such a coward so I am not trying anything by myself because I'm so worried about injuries. By the way, If you haven't made one, would you make any videos for improving bad habits during dancing such as squeezing your toes during pointe in ballet slippers, rolling in your lips kind of things. Orrrr anybody please gimme the link if you've seen any videos from her about this issues!

My teacher that graduated in Mannheim gave us all of that advice too. My other teacher that graduated from Vaganova just let us do whatever even though there were people who haven't even done ballet before. Wooooow...

I'm 15 and in my third year of pointe. I'm still terrified. I have anxiety. I just finished my intermediate exam a week ago (now advanced found) and stepping backwards on pointe is so scary. I love releves. But stepping up onto pointe, especially on one leg?? Ahhhh It's all in my head however - my teacher says I'm very strong. But I can't help it, it's so scary One thing I've realized helped is wiggling my toes when laying down in the pointe shoe. It helps me ground myself. I always feel like my pointe shoe is a thick box attached to my foot, so wiggling my toes makes me remember the pointe shoes are around my foot, not beneath it.

Just a question from a bustier dancer: How can I help to eliminate or decrease the upper body movement while I'm dancing? Especially for performances when I can't wear my normal sports bra that helps during class?

It doesn't hurt, I'm just aware of it and I want to feel supported while dancing and not bounce or anything.

Check your dance apparel store for options in specialty bras that fit under the leo. I do it for when I have to move books at work as they actually help my back to better. If they don't have an option - check your nearest department store for specialty bras that look similar in build to the ones in the dance shop.

Capezio Bratek Leo's are super supportive and come in tons of different styles and colors, they run about $40 I think, but it's totally worth every penny. :)

so I have a barre at home but doing any pointe work on my tile scares me because theres not as much friction. is there such thing as like a portable dance flooring? I only ever have one 30 minute pointe class per week and feel like I need to be practicing as much as possible but in a safe way.
