TV Licence Fee Is Paid For Them. But They Really Shouldn’t Have To

The Isle of Man is continuing for another year to cover the cost of the tv licence fee for its residents over the age of 75. Which is great, but they shouldn’t have to do this

5000 x £159 = £759000, not £75900. The BBC are getting 10 times the amount you say they shouldn't, CJ! The Isle of Man is a very wealthy place and a tax haven, in fact. That only 100 people living there qualify for a free TV licence doesn't surprise me at all.

BBC reporting now that they have sold the Eastenders set and studioes on a Sale & Leaseback ----they need to "save" £500m. Why did they offer toerag Lineker a £4m contract last year then ???

It's probably a "shell company" like BBC Studios, so they can continue to leach off tax payers, and hide the profits. BBC use tax payers money to make programmes which they then sell around the world and hide the profits in these "private" companies. This is why we can't see how much the likes of David Attenborough are being paid, because "technically" they aren't BBC employees!

My mum is 89 this year and still pays for the tv license as she get her pension but is not on pension credit the bbc should be ashamed can anyone stop this tv tax

£759,000 they are getting from IOM. The DWP in the U.K. was always paying for every licence fee using the householders NI Number to enable the payment. Taxpayers were funding the so called free licence for over 75s It was never ever Free.

The Isle of Man has never been a part of The UK as it is a Crown Dependency ( meaning it shares the same Royal Monarch as The UK) and is NOT a Political Dependency of The United Kingdom since they don't send any Political Representatives MP's to Westminster to look after their interest. Being an Independent Country The Isle of Man could at anytime abolish completely the needs requirements to have any TV Licence, since whatever business they do with The UK is on Contractual for Services basis like with using The NHS in England etc.

@2:10 Sorry but you are wrong on putting the blame on Boris. This current "Royal Charter" agreement was the result of the previous one ending on 31st December 2016. They run for approxiamtely ten years, so next "review" will be in 2026/7 as the current one expires on the 31 December 2027. The section in law (Communication Act 2003) was amended in 2017, by, I believe, the Tory/Lib Dem Government to add section 365A - TV licence fee concessions by reference to age. Where the previous concession was over 65, to give the BBC the power to determine the concession. The blame is purely the BBC, they took the decision to axe it and criminalize our older folk. And I quote "For the purposes of section 365(1A) the BBC may determine that a concession in specified terms is to apply."

When the French ditched their television licence it was folded into indirect taxation, meaning you couldn’t avoid paying it. Very typical political sleight of hand. This is the flaw in Chili’s argument. The TV licence may go away, but the TV tax will not. They’ll just take it using another method. Those of us who refuse to pay it and refuse to watch live broadcast television will then have no alternative but to fund the BBC even whilst we choose not to view it.

​@walsingham-xxiii Precisely because so many people are now refusing to pay for a licence, the government have realised that the current model can't fund the BBC for very long. It is easily possible that by 2027, when the current charter expires, 25% or so of households will not be paying. That is the real reason the government is talking about putting it on income tax. The success of the non-payment campaign will destroy the licence model come what may. So, the more that refuse to pay before then reduces the budgetary baseline that they will have if it does go on income tax. It shows the failure of the BBC. Broadcast television will be entirely gone in 10 to 15 years anyway. Those who support the BBC are backing a dying industry. Government love to waste money supporting the dinosaur businesses.

Why should anyone get a free TV licence just because they have had a certain number of birthdays ? Lots of pensioners are quite wealthy. Poor young people are prosecuted for non-payment. Why not the same for rich old people ?

How many pensioners do you know who are quite wealthy and wealthy compared to who? When you get as old as me (74) you'll be very happy to have some sort of concession to offset the cost of living!
