The actors who portrayed their parents, John Amos (James), was 34, and Esther Rolle was 53. This is similar to the age gap between the leads of _The Jeffersons_ (Isabel Sanford was 21 years older than Sherman Hemsley). And Ja'net DuBois (their neighbor Willona) was 41 at the time of the taping for season 1 began.

Compared to the other family sitcoms from the 70s, Bernadette was probably one of the youngest black women in her age group to have such a long run in a sitcom television and on CBS. Think about The Brady Bunch where you had 3 young girls to captivate the screen, there was only one girl on Good Times to represent the young black girl on screen. That's a remarkable feat at a time when there were far fewer parts for young Afro-American women then compared to now! Bravo, Bernadette!!!! Bravo!!!!!!
