in addition, have you ever tried Dragon General Fu Yuanshan:Faction Overhaul made by my friends? That's a faction mod for cathay, which adds a lot of mechanics, quest lines and exclusive units. I believe that mod will also bring you fun in the game.

Interesting that the native troops has fire resistance. It’s ironic because the real natives in Southern China wore thick impermeable rattan armour but were very weak to fire.
