@@ABC-ik9vj I'd say it's about a 5-10% chance because Leo's a bit of a wildcard and Genesis is his event. But given that he's only just getting motivation back and recently lost to Armadillo I don't think it's particularly likely.

I think what tweek is talking about at 22:00 is the old mango quote about playing grands with zain behind a 7/11 for five bucks. Tournaments in tweeks backyard (LMBM) feel grass roots and genuine, whereas the massive, almost coporate-like tournaments on the other side of the continent feel like so foreign it's hard to play the same.

I think Charles is pretty narrow in his view of the rankings. Maybe it’s purpose in smash 4 was to help people get teams, but it has so much value as a tool to shed light on the greater scene beyond the same players we see at every major. Maybe somebody isn’t ranked in the top 50 but they could be the highest ranking player of a character which is notable, or even of a whole region that doesn’t get the chance to travel so that person may be their best rep. It’s a tool for the community at large, not just to see who gets picked up

I think people wanting a 6-month ranking are very biased by the old way of ranking players, which was not entirely algo-based and was taking into account some "legacy value" from the previous season. If you are to use a full algo-based ranking like Lumi without considering previous seasons but only the current 6 months, you guys have to realize that top players don't meet each other THAT often. Take someone like Gluto who goes to many tournaments, he has played vs HALF of the top 50 players in the whole of 2023, and this percentage would go down to like 25% in a 6 month period. Sonix would be at like 15% probably. So we are ranking you vs a majority of players that you haven't played against even ONCE in the season. Does it really feel optimal to you? This was not the case in past times when most of the top players were in US : they were facing each other often because they lived close to each other. But now, how many top US players fought more than a few top 100 JP players? If you want to be able to say who are the best players RIGHT NOW, it's a "seed ranking", which can be computed live, like every week. And you have to be ready to see your favorite player going from 3rd to 12th in the span of 1 month because of 1 or 2 bad performances. I'd love to see that implemented somehow. But otherwise, you have to accept that old rankings were super biased and profiting from centralized US scene, and that if you wanna reduce these biases, you need to extend the time period. Did you notice how few critics there have been on placements in this 2023 LumiRank ? People be complaining about the full year period, yeah, but nobody jumped off their seat by looking at the placements. Because they can see that it's overall a very good ranking, and it's thanks to the time period.

what I've heard with Acola is that initially he wasn't feeling motivated to compete so he didn't register, and later on he changed his mind and wanted to register but it was too late for his sponsor to organise his trip. It's a bit more complicated since he requires an adult with him too. As for rankings, you definitely can be ranked high while staying in Japan, but i think to be #1 you do still need to go to NA, since NA players don't come to Japan very often and those wins are important

I'm curious if we're gonna get a player having a massive breakout at Genesis X tbh. It happened at 8 with Jmook for Melee and MuteAce in 9 for Ultimate, maybe we could see another one of those runs again but for a different player this time.

I'm thinking genesis is gonna be shuton's big p tier pop off since BOBC. since this season's started, he's lost to. Miya, tama (on the run of his life), acola, and miya again. his sets with acola and miya were also actually pretty solid. I think he will definitely take sets from them this year.

Charles has talked a lot about wanting to grow the scene by making it more inclusive (e.g. rulesets should be made with that mindset), but then it feels a bit strange to make rankings less inclusive (eg not top 100 or more) so that more players get more recognition and exposure for their efforts. I understand the argument that it makes no practical difference for a majority of players and, instead, hurts a lot of the top players, but it does feel inconsistent with the mentality of inclusivity.

If you're already top 150 in the world you're very invested in the scene and probably won't quit if you miss Lumirank (you would still see plenty of recognition via region/state PRs anyway). I think Charles is more interested in bringing in (and keeping) brand new players who are not so invested in the game and could easily just move away from Smash if they have a rough experience at their first local

As far as Lumiranks, why not do both 6 month and a 12 month ranking. 6 Months in release the top 50, 6 months later release the top 50 of the 2nd half of the year. Then also at the end of the year release the 12 month top 150 for the year. Can't be that expensive to do both right?

The only bad thing (and it’s also a good thing too lol) is that Kagaribi is held like 3 or 4 times a year so it doesn’t always have the hit that Genesis or Smashcon have when they’re only once a year. It’s good that the Japanese tournaments happen a lot just because it’s good for the game, but it feels like it loses a little bit of that oomf for me PERSONALLY

On the topic of acola not attending tournaments despite being ranked 1st, do we know how steve-banned tournaments play into rankings? I know it hasn’t come into play yet since he’s had other events to go to during like LMBM but it does seem kinda jank that the #1 player in the world might not be able to attend some tournaments, or at the very least forced to use secondaries only

Also Acola won Smashcon which the other two attended and Summit which Sparg0 attended due to how consistent he is
