My dad tried all four branches, Coast Guard, Marines, Army and Navy. He was getting his hair cut off when the barber caught his left side speaking to him but my dad didn't realize until too late. He had major hearing loss in his left ear. They HAD no choice but to turn him down. He worked in the Passkigula (Misp), MS ship yard for the duration of the war building mostly Liberty ships! He lost many friends and relatives in WWII. Married right after the war to start a family. Lost his wife in less than a year to Cancer. I tried to ask what type of cancer 25 years later and he still could not talk in any details. Too painful. We had just lost my mother four months before!! A lot of loss and pain for one generation! Thanks to your father's and families for their service and support!

We had a good friend who was a B-17 instructor pilot in WWII. He said they were given wornout birds just returned from combat, which made transition training interesting. Like the captain of the weather ship, he made several belly landings, one of them on a golf course. The accident rate was so high that he yearned for a combat assignment. Over twenty years later he walked away from another crash, this one just a couple of miles from our home. His son-in-law was flying a brand new Piper Cherokee 140 with him, his son, and another kid aboard. The engine quit on takeoff just above the trees and beyond the field. His son-in-law was a new pilot, and froze as the plane began to stall. Gene grabbed the yoke, just missed one tall tree, then stalled the plane right above some other trees. The Cherokee feel through them, snapped off its wings, and crumpled to the ground. The only piece still intact was the cockpit. Miraculously, they were all able to crawl away from the wreckage. I hiked in with my Dad to examine the wreckage. It was quite an accomplishment based on flying skills learned in WWII.

Whew, you gave me chills mentioning that incredible "crawl away crash" in a Cessna 140. I flew 40 hours in the 140, got heat stroke in my last solo, the triangulation, no AC in July, Texas. Because I was not obsessing with procedure I slicked it in the short grass field at Burdett.

This show was much better than often depicted. While not all of the shows were good, many were good to excellent. War is much more than firing guns and dropping bombs. It was about the men who were sent out to do a job, the officers who had to make decisions to ask men to put their life on the line. Lets not forget the mechanics who were often required to do the impossible and keep planes flying with minimal supplies and parts. I have often wonder what I would have done if I was a young man during the war. Would I have been a pilot, gunner, or aircraft mechanic? If I was an officer, would I have been someone with the horrible responsibility of put kids into harms way. I agree with the idea that the men and women of WWII where the greatest generation we have ever known.

I probably remember the "Black Cats" from an out of print series of British books on world aircraft. They had copies of the ID silhouette cards + production & squadron data. One of the author's last names was Green. Fortunately or unfortunately I think the collectors market got them reprinted in large format & $$$ price.

On this and other episodes, they show sn HU-16 Albaross as the rescue aircraft. In reality it first flew in 1947. The more likely option would have been sa PBY Catalina which Americans and British both flew. The other possibility would have been a Shorts seaplane of British design and manufacture. One was used in an Indiana Jones movie and was actually a static display being restored at the Air Museum in Oakland CA.

QM shows could often play up the "romance" as part of QMs "people's stories". Maybe more of this on 12 Oclock this season in the attempt to widen the viewer base in this "make or break" remodeled season. It's Monday 730 this year and the series was attempting to court more women for the audience. Though Combat (also 730) from another production company did not go after the femme audience; it relied almost entirely on the "family male demographic". QM also had quite a guest star stable including many actresses.

So, what would happen if Hollywood tried to do a one-off movie remake of the original novel the series is based on? The original movie was made in 1949, there were still a lot of flyable 17's left back then. You probably could count the operable ones today on one hand. The TV show's main aircraft, "Piccadilly Lilly" (which had more lives than a cat in the TV show) exists on display at the airport in Chino, CA, needing about $2Mil in restoration work to operate again. Another one was lost to gross negligence in CT last Fall (I read the preliminary NTSB findings). The group that owned it should probably never be allowed to fly one again. Anyway, perhaps with modern movie-making techniques and production sensibilities it might be possible to do justice to the material. They remake a bunch of bad old movies all the time, maybe they should try this story again.

41:10 ok what a BS. the airspeed indicator gives IAS... if you were in a 100kt tail wind for more than 2sec your airspeed would return to the normal IAS since you fly relative to air to keep your lift. your Ground Speed would be greater but you can only measure the GS by using some sort of GPS, measure distance and time or by an observer on the ground that has some sort of speed measurement equipment. NO way they can see it in a B17 in 1944 by only looking at the instruments. sad stuff. this has become such an soap opera, sad. i really liked the first season even though it had its fair share of romantic stuff... this is ridiculous btw how the women behave in this season so far. no wonder i had to take a break of 3months since the last episode. i mean its a great show, it gives a special feeling but i can only take so mich of this...maybe the next episode will be watched in 3months after all.

Back then a navigator had what what was called math, checkpoints, beacons, and compass readings that would allow him to calculate ground speed. Not a bunch of GPS dependent pilots who can't read a chart these days. I agree, the romantic relations in this and every other Hollywood fantasy are ludicrous.

This must be one of the worst/weakest episodes in the series. Bringing a scatty, irrational woman into a war drama is bound to end up wet as a rainy weekend.

Gallagher’s lashes seem to grow everytime he looks at a woman. He’s a lady killer. Or a flirt. Savage was more stable and had only 1 love interest.

so much of this show was canned, stock footage... canned air combat scenes..same (wrong) aircraft....American P-47s substituting for Luftwaffe planes....same footage of aircraft getting hit, same chattering .50 cal machine guns chattering, same planes banking, diving, etc. Same belly landing scenes and sound effects. I guess audiences were a lot dumber back then, cuz they either didn't notice or didn't care. I would've felt kind of insulted or cheated.

May be we were glad to have more than one channel. Even though there were 3 networks, most places only had 2 channels. Every 12 O'Clock high show we ever saw, it looked like it was in a snow storm with major static.
