Brilliantly done thank you. I think what makes Twin Peaks frightening is the fact that the entities that inhabit the black lodge are not simple and mere fantasy supernatural elements. The native american people's believe in evil spirits that can take human hosts as prey. There are many religions and the mystic practices of these religions that talk of the spirit world. Lynch is on a conscious level aware of these realms and has portrayed the astral planes of existence so eloquently in his work. Electricity is a conductor of both positive and negative energy, and i think he is trying to depict these entities as positive and negative energies that flow through a current, namely the astral plane, a plane of existence that is parallel to our "reality". Lynch practices transcendental meditation in which focuses on the sea of consciousness within the recesses of the subconscious mind. He has recently depicted this in the twin peaks return when cooper falls through the the floor of the waiting room. I personally believe that the entities and their powers both the good and bad entities shown in twin peaks is not far from reality, I think if anything it teaches the viewer to choose love over fear as the emotional power they can harness for themselves to get access to their full potential.

The reason Mike cut off his arm is because he and Bob both had matching tattoos on their upper left arms that had the words "Fire Walk With Me" written. To break the bond between him and Bob he cut off the arm above the tattoo meaning the entire arm was cut not even leaving a stump behind. The arm evolved into the Man From Another Place, the place being the White Lodge.
@augustgreig94203 жыл бұрын
Came to the comments to look for this. I haven't watched the show since it originally aired, and I was about 10 then, so I don't remember perfectly. But I thought Mike had a tattoo on his arm, but I thought it was a tattoo of black fire that he could use to summon his familiar. I must have made that last part up, or mingled different parts of the show together. Where exactly does he explain about his tattoo? And when does it say that the arm is from the white lodge? I thought the white lodge was good.

Yes, Mike and Bob used to be a team for many ages to symbolize this bond they made a pact over the Fire. They both enjoyed the chaos, misery, fire and volcanic darkness of old America which would bring darkness to the entire Northern hemisphere. Very good "introductory" level examination of the Lodge entities; thank you for putting it together. One criticism I would have, though, is that Mark Frost isn't mentioned in your piece at all. Mr. Lynch deserves endless credit for Twin Peaks as art, but based on interviews and Frost's own TP novels, I'd think the mythos of the show owes a great deal to Mr. Frost. Lynch has always seemed far more vested in exploring the abstract elements of their world, while Frost, as the more grounded, traditional storyteller seems to be the one who is interested in the narrative and mythology they build together. Lauding Mr. Lynch while ignoring Mr. Frost is like telling someone how great a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup by complimenting the peanut butter and ignoring the chocolate. Technically, you're not wrong... but you're not telling the whole story, either. Thanks again.

Nicely edited video, Mike! That singer in the Lodge was Jimmy Scott (often referred to as Little Jimmy Scott). I first saw a documentary about him when I was visiting Prague back in 2000. His voice was remarkable. Turns out, he was born with a dysfunction that nearly eliminated all his testosterone production in his body... so, in essence, his voice had the ethereal quality of a castrato. I would've loved to have seen him perform live, but never got the chance. Although, one of my friends was fortunate enough to catch a performance of his in New Orleans. He passed away in 2014.

I've been fascinated and consumed with trying to make sense out of the whole thing and find myself coming back to youtube for answers linked to the former 2 seasons and movie. Your synopsis helped break down some of my curiosity. Although i still really am bothered that Lynch has to be so fucking weird all the time, I plan on finishing the season. the first part in B/W is a William S. Burroughs quote, one of his short stories, it's also in Thomas Pynchon's Against the Day and many other sources, the same idea, that something was here before 'whitemancame' and occupy the places that the indigenous consider sacred or don't recommend anyone to visit at all. It's about place, the different times but the same place, existing as much now as they did then. Just putting in my two cents worth, I have done a lot of research on this, including David Paulides work and I think there is something worth considering.

I agree completely. I've heard of a few directors trying to start projects based on Lovercraft's work and they all sound terrible. Like The Mountains of Madness set in the modern era instead of 20s/30s and the characters are all switched around and its made into a dull action-thriller. Ugh. But Lynch is a master of atmosphere and mood. Everything Lovecraft does involves creepy, unsettling mood and the implication of something hideous/terrible. Lynch could do that perfectly.

While I think they in their own regard were supernatural beings, I believe Albert was right about BOB and to an extent JUDY. BOB is the manifestation of suffering and the evil that man does as represented by his birth during the first atomic detonation. For example there are times where Leland did wrong without BOB's influence like sleeping with Theresa Banks and her eventual murder to keep her quiet. Meanwhile JUDY is Sarah Palmer's neverending sadness. Yet, they still manifest in their own ways like BOB influencing Leland and JUDY straight up possessing Sarah.

great analysis, thank you. I also think twin peaks is a microcosm of the world and the corrupt systems that are put in place, the dark side of the family structure and social institutions and i think certain characters are representative of these flawed systems

This was a truly great video man! I've been following your series for the past couple of weeks and I've have seen your content gradually improve in every aspect, I seriously hope you continue making videos. Heres my question not related directly to the Black Lodge... So we see in Fire Walk with me that Philip Jeffries has become some sort of bizarre conduit for "the room above the convenience store"... So what is your personal take on the disappearance of Chester Desmond?
@michaelsnow17 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Ominously Desmond was near some electrical wires that were sort of whistling slightly like the man from another place. And in the new series we've seen that people can be transported directly through the electric wires from and presumably to the lodge. Maybe the strange ring he found and wore, the green one, was a conduit that pulled him in. I suppose he's still in there or died during the process.
@davidtrudell83047 жыл бұрын
I'm okay with Lynch never explaining the disappearance but were he ever to do so, I'm seriously hoping for another glimpse into "the room above the convenience store". The scene with Jeffries has always stuck out as one of the most unsettling sequences in any form of media.
@michaelsnow17 жыл бұрын
In a deleted scene Bob laughs menacingly and Jeffries is shown teleported to a hotel in Argentina. Maybe he was forced back there across the electric lines to prevent him revealing too much about the world.
@michaelsnow17 жыл бұрын
The ring is peculiar because it seems that Mike, a good guy, may have thrown the ring to Laura to put on. Thus dooming her. But it may have been to protect her from being possessed by Bob, even if it meant her death. Judy, its speculated by some fans based on non-canon stuff from scripts, may be Josie Packard's sister. What relationship she has with the Lodge is vague at best.

I also see that Bob is an actual entity. I'm not a fan of the theory of Leland being actually guilty of committing the crimes. I think Bob uses his vessels by their gifts a lot-- as seen by Evil Cooper investigative abilities, and Leland's conciliatory abilities.
@michaelsnow17 жыл бұрын
Maybe Leland was gradually slipping into being more and more evil over time. But its seems that Bob did all of the worst stuff like with Laura or killing Teresa Banks.
@JamiHeart7 жыл бұрын
I don't know if you've read The diary of Laura Palmer but, in that book Laura is clearly being influenced by Bob but, she also clearly likes being a "naughty" girl. I don't think Bob can inhabit a pure spirit. I believe Leland was a bad person to begin with. Bob even says that Leland is a "babe in the woods with a huge hole where his conscience used to be."
@rdkarlov7 жыл бұрын
Actually the entities were said to inhabit vessels that invited and opened themselves somehow. So there's a chance that the vessels if not guilty are at least accomplices. I just don't know how this fits Coop though. Is Coop being punished for the events regarding Windom's wife yet to date?
@williamharvey3817 жыл бұрын
No. Coop is being punished for what he did to Dianne. We found that out in S3E7, when Dianne visited him in prison at the insistence of Coops boss.
@kimmolaine80697 жыл бұрын
Whatever Evil Coop did during the prison phone call was done by Bob's power I presume. Earlier in the episode Coop looked at a mirror and said "You're still with me. That's good." In any case, Leland being possessed and Evil Coop being possessed don't compare. Cooper's doppelganger was evil to begin with.

Great analysis, well done! My take is that the spirits inhabit either side of identical lodges (black & white) and that they are roughly equals socially, but have waxing and waning powers that depend on how much they have fed from the corporeal world of mortals. Garbonzea is food derived of pain and sorrow, but other spiritual food can be derived from positive emotions such as love and hope (though only white lodge spirits would enjoy such sustenance). Hawk spoke of powerful sorcerers entering the lodges - this is probably Mike (he speaks of Bob being his familiar); Mike was probably a dark sorcerer who hunted and collected garbonzea with his familiar, becoming every more powerful until he elevated to a true spirit entity; but upon being influenced by white lodge spirits decided to change his ways and cut his arm off (which bore a dark tribal tattoo) severing the link with Bob. As you described, tmfp was thus born, as a sentient part of a shattered whole. The lodges and the spirits are limited by their incorporeal nature and can influence via electricity, but to truly operate as free agents they must possess a human vessel (the giant/droolcup, bob/Leland, mike/Philip G). There are social and possibly physical rules that must be adhered to (a doppelgänger can only take the place of its original/exist outside of the lodge for 25 years) and Bad Coop has set into motion a plan to cheat those rules by having a simulacrum (Dougie) return to the lodge in his place and getting hit men to kill Good Coop when he is returned to the corporeal world - thus maintaining the balance (Mike tells good Coop that one of them must now die - since there are now two Coops running around in the world). What did you make of the season 2 map to the lodges? There is a depiction of a giant next to a dwarf (the giant and tmfp?).
@michaelsnow17 жыл бұрын
It was strange that the map/petroglyph thing was known to people who saw the lodge. Like it was imprinted in their minds when they left. How old was the map supposed to be? Because it was in that cave it felt like it was at least hundreds of years old. If not more. I suppose then that Bob has been roaming around for a very long time. Maybe a human shaman was compelled to draw it but hide it deep with a cave like the most ancient human cave paintings.

That would be amazing in the new series if we see each region of the planet has its own version of the lodge and its entities. Like culturally appropriate for that region or time period. I would love to see more.

I really like your video and analysis, especially with the meta and psychological interpretations that are so prevalent. I’m only a few minutes in, so maybe you’ll address this later. If so, disregard my comment! My one quibble so far is that I tend to believe Leland and Laura never had a truly functional or loving relationship, and not just because of BOB. I think Leland’s perversion and weakness were probably why BOB chose and stayed with him in the first place. Not only would he be easy to ply, but his shame and guilt would ensure an additional supply of garmonbozia. Any father harboring lustful feelings for his child is incapable of being a good parent. Even if he suppresses them, their very presence is a betrayal. I get that it’s a sickness and is probably out of the individual’s control, but the loving and responsible way to handle it would be to voluntarily cut off contact or at least unsupervised access to the child. I believe that Leland’s incestuous feelings were real, and the remorse in the scene where he came to Laura’s room crying in Fire Walk With Me was genuine, too. His jealousy and possessiveness in FWWM felt like an abusive human being to me, not an animalistic possessing spirit. Particularly his behavior in the “wash your hands” scene was all Leland, in my opinion. And most chillingly when Leland was killing Laura and woundedly told her, “I always thought you knew it was me!” The implications of that are so uncomfortable to think about. He was upset because he had thought his sexual relationship with his young daughter was a reciprocal thing, and he found out from her diary that she had only seen Bob. Maybe he could have kept his desire in check without BOB egging him on, but it still would have been a deeply functional relationship and I’m sure Laura would have sensed something was off.

It's a great line and one of the (comparatively few) complete sentences from the actual novel that made it into the film. But, kudos man, it fits Twin Peaks *really* fucking well! Forgotten his name but I love that actor who plays the Kerouac expy. He's the spooky-slick killer in Cronenberg's Dead Zone as well (as you probably know!) and he was also used in one or two other films, I can't think of their names right now though! Great video man (subbed), I'm old enough to remember when Twin Peaks premiered on "terrestrial" TV (I didn't really get into 'til the latter third of the first series and was fairly spooped by the second), this Return, though....*fuck*, man, it's like Showtime just threw a load of money at Lynch and Frost and said: "do whatever you fucking want--*BUT MAKE SURE IT'S TOTAL NIGHTMARE FUEL, PLEASE!*" It ups the disturbing surrealism factor by times 50. At least. "TODAY YOU REMIND ME OF A SMALL MEXICAN CHEE-WAH-WOW" *fuck off you complete maniac I love your work but please don't come near me*

are there any shows like twin peaks?
@michaelsnow16 жыл бұрын
I've been trying to find stuff like it for years but nothing ever seems to quite match up with the Lynch/Frost magic. There's a show on netflix called The Killing set in Washington state that's a pretty good non-supernatural detective story. Another netflix show called Dark was pretty amazing supernatural horror/science-fiction. A French show called Les Revenants is pretty amazing supernatural mystery too. Quite a few shows had bits and pieces of what made Twin peaks great like Lost, The X-files or Fringe but never really had the exact same feel.
