To bring in the New Year we take a look at our mate and engine build specialist Johns 1977 XC Falcon Ute race car.
John built the entire car himself from what was his daily driver 20 years ago. It features a twin turbo 351 Cleveland running on methanol via a blow through Demon carby.
We take a detailed look at what a talented bloke can do in his home garage before looking at ways to improve the setup with some modern tech.

@@ThatGuy_21 😅 Geography is not on our side unfortunately bud. The full weight streetcar XY is a bad unit, but not sure it would have anything for this light full chassis drag car though.

So much fab porn in this beast, but I’m especially swooning over the rear end. The whole setup with the perfectly fabbed yoke, dead straight tubs, right down to the location of the trans cooler for ease of maintenance. This is a labour of love fellas, and we’d love to see more of these build features!

Love John's work. The fan stuff is all freaking spotless and the overall thing is crazy overbuilt for that kind of drivetrain/power which is what I love. Dude is clearly doing this 'cause he loves the tinkering and the building, the racing is just an excuse to spend 4 weekends in the shed making brackets 😂 I know how that is! Hope he's not spending too much time by himself in the shed though, blow through carbs and mech pumps is def a cry for help

Someone spent an awful lot of money building a hot engine, setting up their 351 xc ute for drags, then unfortunately had it repossessed. My boss bought it at auction for $1500 in the 80s and we used it as the work ute. 4 wheel discs, Dick Johnston front suspension kit, with 10 inch steering wheel (no power steering, heavy..). Heavy twin plate clutch and Top Loader, with one of those short shift things that you almost need a screwdriver and a hammer to find reverse on it. The really tight diff made it almost useless in the rain. Turning from a stop in the wet, with an engine that barely ran under 2500 revs, with the worlds heaviest on/off clutch, was educating for someone that had just got their licence. It had twist from the radiator support to the cowl of almost 2 inches. Almost forgot the "tramp bars" painted silver for fastness.

Everyone: "John... you should go EFI!" John: "I like carbies..." Al: "... but how will you turbo it then?" John: "Hold my micrometer, my machinist blue, my lathe, my mill, my obsessive compulsion for neatness and my massive balls of pure defiant WILL!" That thing looks sketchy as fuck and perfectly mint at the same time!
