I think the most important lesson for me is "I do this all day for about 18 hours". You want to get to Jacob's level, expect to put in the work. Sure, he's naturally talented, but those talents don't manifest out of thin air!
@MudStuffin5 жыл бұрын
It takes a tremendous amount of work for anyone to get to that level, but to have perfect pitch down to the cent, and exceedingly musical parents helps.

To hear at that level, I believe being endowed with perfect pitch is an asset and really helps. therefore Hearing microtones might not be a big deal for him since he can most likely deviate from the actual pitch. hearing the amount of cents increments is unbelievable and I think even with perfect pitch that would require serious practice!!

In the past, great composers stretched the Western tonal system in various ways. Bach, Beethoven, Wagner, Ives and so on. Others tried to completely smash it. Schoenberg, Webern, Berg, Boulez and so on. Right here, right now, Jacob Collier is stretching the system in an unprecedented way, creating a whole new microtonal vocabulary that will one day be fully incorporated into the Western tonal system. One day, the key of (F) half-sharp will be a utilized and fully accepted tonality.
@simonprecheurllarena6 жыл бұрын
Funny that I thought the exact same thing earlier today That microtonal stuff smells like a new revolution in western music, because Jacob doesn't think of it in a conceptual way like schoenberg would, but rather in the most human and musical way possible
@danilodawsonvideos6 жыл бұрын
I thought the same, this perspective is awesome for popular musicians. When I work in producing music now, with Jacob's work in mind, I have new tools to improve popular music arrangements, and I think, Jacob's influence in all popular musicians in the world is a big deal, we are part of a big revolution of how (specially pop music's armony) is expanding.

@27shogun585 жыл бұрын
@@RomanNewhouse First of all of music uses semitones, you mean microtones. Second, there are more musicians that use microtones than I can ever list. Taylor Brook wrote a whole album for microtonal pianos, Virtutes Occultae, which you can find on youtube. Ben Johnston uses microtones a lot, also on youtube. One of the most famous musicians to have used microtones was Harry Partch, an american musician. I can go on? Clearly you don't know what you're talking about.

Damian Lillard Because he does REAL music. It goes over the heads of regular listeners. Do you think a person that is an avid Cardi B listener can comprehend him???
@Caroline-pb8xx6 жыл бұрын
Will Brown I think it's more so because he doesn't use the usual pop melodies. His music catches your heart, but you remember that. Most of the time, on the radio, you're remembering the melody. It's about what's said out loud, "oh, I'm humming this song by soandso." I've been sharing Jacob Collier to so many people, but some artists use their chords in a way that makes the melody a contagion, whereas Collier makes a river, not a hook. He hooks the heart, and often times I think that's only shown where the people are around him. If I make sense, I mean to say that some artists use that addicting melody. Your family might ask, "why are you humming that all the time?" With Collier, it's on a much quieter, deeper level.
