I think the most important lesson for me is "I do this all day for about 18 hours". You want to get to Jacob's level, expect to put in the work. Sure, he's naturally talented, but those talents don't manifest out of thin air!
@MudStuffin

It takes a tremendous amount of work for anyone to get to that level, but to have perfect pitch down to the cent, and exceedingly musical parents helps.

To hear at that level, I believe being endowed with perfect pitch is an asset and really helps. therefore Hearing microtones might not be a big deal for him since he can most likely deviate from the actual pitch. hearing the amount of cents increments is unbelievable and I think even with perfect pitch that would require serious practice!!

It's so heartening to see legends like you be so open with what you do, pretention-less, and childlike; what more does a fellow musician want? This almost feels like having a one-on-one masterclass with you. Thanks a ton Jacob! Warm prayers for you always. PS: I do not know Western music. I enjoy it. I play a different kind of music, but am able to relate to your music dearly.

In the past, great composers stretched the Western tonal system in various ways. Bach, Beethoven, Wagner, Ives and so on. Others tried to completely smash it. Schoenberg, Webern, Berg, Boulez and so on. Right here, right now, Jacob Collier is stretching the system in an unprecedented way, creating a whole new microtonal vocabulary that will one day be fully incorporated into the Western tonal system. One day, the key of (F) half-sharp will be a utilized and fully accepted tonality.
@simonprecheurllarena
@simonprecheurllarena 6 жыл бұрын
Funny that I thought the exact same thing earlier today That microtonal stuff smells like a new revolution in western music, because Jacob doesn't think of it in a conceptual way like schoenberg would, but rather in the most human and musical way possible
@danilodawsonvideos
@danilodawsonvideos 6 жыл бұрын
I thought the same, this perspective is awesome for popular musicians. When I work in producing music now, with Jacob's work in mind, I have new tools to improve popular music arrangements, and I think, Jacob's influence in all popular musicians in the world is a big deal, we are part of a big revolution of how (specially pop music's armony) is expanding.

@27shogun58
@27shogun58 5 жыл бұрын
@@RomanNewhouse First of all of music uses semitones, you mean microtones. Second, there are more musicians that use microtones than I can ever list. Taylor Brook wrote a whole album for microtonal pianos, Virtutes Occultae, which you can find on youtube. Ben Johnston uses microtones a lot, also on youtube. One of the most famous musicians to have used microtones was Harry Partch, an american musician. I can go on? Clearly you don't know what you're talking about.

Will Brown I think it's more so because he doesn't use the usual pop melodies. His music catches your heart, but you remember that. Most of the time, on the radio, you're remembering the melody. It's about what's said out loud, "oh, I'm humming this song by soandso." I've been sharing Jacob Collier to so many people, but some artists use their chords in a way that makes the melody a contagion, whereas Collier makes a river, not a hook. He hooks the heart, and often times I think that's only shown where the people are around him. If I make sense, I mean to say that some artists use that addicting melody. Your family might ask, "why are you humming that all the time?" With Collier, it's on a much quieter, deeper level.

As a jazz vocalist, I am always trying to listen to as many different songs and styles and artists to gather new ideas and to learn, and watching videos like this and listening to your music has influenced me and taught me more than you could ever imagine. So thank you. I was lucky enough to see your live show in LA back in November, and I honestly don't think that I will ever see a concert that tops the one you gave. Unless, of course, I get to see you perform again, which would be awesome. It always pleases me tremendously when I walk into a concert expecting great things and then walk out of the concert having witnessed amazing things. Your energy, enthusiasm, and your love of what you do are so infectious and it motivates me every day to put in that tiny bit of extra work that makes all the difference between something good and something great. 11:08 I could hear that the last note was slightly sharp too... ...but how in the F**K did you know it was approx. 61 cents sharp?! I know you have perfect pitch, but it can't be THAT perfect... ...right?

I just spent my evening listening to this, alone with a beer in the madness that is 2020. I watched from start to finish, and it is glorious. Even the fuck off loud 'HOW I WONDER' gospel which makes me jump almost every time. Thank you for a lovely evening past jacob.

At 25:05, he says he wore "twinkle" trousers for the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Challenge. Good thing it wasn't the Cock A Doodle Doo challenge. Seriously, thanks for the glimpse into how your talented mind works. I learned a few things about music and Logic.

What a treat and a privilege to watch you as you work and create! I do sincerely hope you do more of this - it's simply astounding to watch you come up with so many utterly fantastic ideas and see how you execute them. Thank you, Jacob. Thank you!

Some say he is the modern equivalent of Mozart. Such a claim may be made even more obvious by the fact that Mozart himself arranged this same tune for keyboard 3 centuries ago!

Brilliant! This shows how extraordinarily skilled musicians are and should be valued far more highly than they are by the establishment. Thank you for making this an educational experience. Fascinating. I love the way you include all different skills and knowledge levels of musicians listening. Great being able to see inside your creative harmonising. Inspirational!
