When I was a little boy I used to hurry home from school so that I could be there in time to catch Yan can Cook. I even got an autograph once at a live show. Some horrible old woman stole my autographed cookbook from me while my mom was in the bathroom and I cried. Mom asked Mr Yan for another one and he was incredibly gracious and hooked us up. He was and is my hero and a big part of why I love cooking today. Yan can cook and so can I!!

Uncle Martin helped this poor, rural Indiana kid learn to look beyond the cornfields he was born in to see how huge and wonderful the world was and inspired in me a love of cooking that has lasted my whole life. Each week, I sat enraptured in front of the t.v to watch Yan Can Cook, just to rush out to the grocery with my Dad to try and replicate the things I had seen. His humor and passion are so infectious. Now, I get to sit with my own daughter and watch the old episodes or watch Uncle Martin when he streams, and share with her that same love of cooking. I sincerely think I would have been a lesser person, having not been exposed to that window to a greater, more interesting world that Uncle Martin gave me.

Watching Uncle Martin Yan's "Yan Can Cook" shows on TV when I was a teenager back in the 1990's is the reason why I was motivated to learn how to cook family meals to help my dad cook. After my parents divorced and when I moved in with my dad soon afterwards, I used to cook dinner (mostly Cantonese cuisine, btw) for my dad almost every night for many years (approx. from 1997 through 2012) until he passed away from natural causes. Seeing Uncle Martin Yan again in this video reminded me of his "Yan Can Cook" show, the fond memories of my teenage years learning how to cook my family meals, and is also so great to know that Uncle Martin Yan is still obviously doing well in his life.

I was 18 years old when I started watching Yan Can Cook. I grew up the youngest of 5 in a blue collar New England family with two parents who could cook. Our dinners were healthy, wholesome, old world New England recipes that focused on not just taste and health but feeding many mouths as inexpensively as possible. We kids were all exposed to cooking and 'encouraged' (it was actually mandatory participation in the beginning) to learn. Some of my early solo attempts at making dinner for the family were enough to make a billygoat puke but my parents weren't brutally harsh with their opinion. My brothers and sister on the other hand were brutal. After I moved out at 18 I found Martin Yan and that set the tone for a lifelong love of Chinese cooking; and later Japanese. I think I learned more about the science behind preparation delicious food from those two cultures than I did the old New England dishes I grew up with. Another aspect of Chinese and Japanese food prep I REALLY liked when I had a family of my own with 4 kids was Time. I could prepare wholesome, healthy, tasty dinners in quantity in a relatively short amount of time compared to the style of my childhood. (I never did like or get used to prepping the ingredients though because I'm tall with a bad back). Thank you for letting us check in on Mr. Yan Uncle Roger!! Great video as always!

He had a show on Canadian TV that I grew up with called "wok with Yan" where he always had a pun on his apron like "wok on the wild side" or "over wok, under pay" among others. Other than Chinese take out, this was the first exposure to Chinese food (and cooking) that many of us white Canadian kids had. The show was aired from 1980 till the mid 90s we also had Yan can cook episodes as well. I used to watch both as a kid/teen and learned many techniques from both shows (and from Julia Child's as well as a few other cooking shows.

This video brought me back to my childhood. Yan Can Cook was the first cooking show I ever watched as a kid. I was obsessed with watching it every time it was on. Over the years, I learned how to cook from watching just how easily he taught cooking and the passion for it. Thank you so much for bringing that joy back to me.

I love how his message is so positive. Very thorough energy but not crazy. Also that noodle master really should be getting ALL the ladies! Such skill with his hands.

I could watch and learn from Uncle Martin all day and night. Such a pure soul. This is one of the most wholesome videos I have seen in a while.

Thank you so much for having Martin Yan in a video. Both my hubby and I watched him when we were children and have loved him ever since. One of our favorite videos. We loved it!

This is probably the most humble Uncle Roger video. Love what you've accomplished and how you are further connecting the cooking community with your comedy. If Jackie Chan ever agrees to do a video with you... *chef's kiss*

I met him once in Holiday Inn Bangkok Sukhimvit, many years ago. He looked very tired but I couldn't bring myself to miss the opportunity and he was gracious about the photo. A lovely guy.

AWESOME!!! I love Martin Yan. I loved watching his "Yen Can Cook" show on PBS when I was child. I am so glad that you are working with Chef Yan. I hope you can work with him in the near future. Does Martin has his own KZbin channel? If not, he should.

Yan is well into his 70s and has so much motion and strength in his cooking you'd never know. I struggle to move like Yan and he is much older than me. I loved watching his and Pasqueles Kitchen growing up. I do feel sad Uncle Roger will never get to meet Uncle Anthony but am greatful we got to see you meet Uncle Yan.
