This video was the first video by a Black artist to ever be featured on the still new MTV. This video came out in 1983 and MTV had only been around for 2 years and, believe it or not, they kinda had a non black video policy. CBS Records was the label Michael was signed to at the time and the President of CBS Records at the time, Walter Yetnikoff, threatened to pull all the other artists they had from the channel if they didn’t play it. Then their ratings skyrocketed and Michael was there pushing the envelope of what a music video should be with videos like “Beat It” and the 14 minute long “Thriller” short film that soon followed that same year and Michael was the leading influencer in music videos. MTV probably wouldn’t have been as big as it was without Michael and particularly this video. It opened the door for other black artists to be featured on MTV like Prince, Lionel Richie, Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, and his own sister Janet.

They didn't have a "kind of" non black policy. It was a full no black policy until after what you said.

Good Job! Michael said that the reason "Billie Jean" was written was the rumors that one of his brothers at any given time got some girl pregnant was just about a constant thing (listen to the lyrics) Okay.....moving on now, yes, watch the1983 Motown 25 special clip of Michael doing the moonwalk for the very first time! The crowd reaction is amazing! May I suggest as a future MJ song to react to is "She's out of my life" off the "Off the wall" album released in 1979. Try not to cry! The 1970's and 1980's were an extremely high quality era of music! The production, talent, and emotion put into each song was at a very high quality. That level will never be reached again! I am 54 years old, I am fortunate to have grown up in that era!
@itsjustnaima10 ай бұрын
You didn’t get the story behind Billie Jean quite right haha. It was Michael himself who experienced what he’s singing about. A woman claimed that MJ was the father of her twins, even stalked him, jumped over the gates of his Hayvenhurst Home, demanded a DNA test which he agreed to in order to stop that and she even attacked his security guard lol. She wanted "Child support" and Michael took her to court multiple times because she wouldn’t stop. She went to jail multiple times and every time she got out she just kept going all the way up till MJ’s death.

David Williams became a popular session guitarist, playing on albums by the Pointer Sisters (1980), Peter Allen (1980), Aretha Franklin (1980) and the Four Tops (1981). In 1982, he was used once again on Michael Jackson's Thriller album, where his signature funky strumming and a minimalist solo famously anchor "Billie Jean".

Michael Joseph Jackson, the greatest entertainer of all time. I was three when he did this on Motown 25, and as iconic and game changing as it was, him being with his brothers was magic. Michael was at his best when he was with them, that's the real Michael. Thank goodness for KZbin and for the ones who saved all this old time shows and stuff for us younger crowd who wasn't born during the J5 era, can now see it. Mike was electric when he was performing with his brothers. Remember The Time is my favorite video by him, and my favorite song by him is called Happy. He was only twelve when he recorded it, but he went off on it. There will never be another Michael Jackson

One of the best songs! Love the video. MJ was a talent like no other. This was Michael's peak. THRILLER was a monster album with so many hit songs. His videos broke down the color barrier on MTV and made MTV leap into the stratosphere. Say what you will about Michael, his talent overshadows any BS people want to say about him. Yes, he became a bit eccentric as his fame catapulted him into a realm not many could handle, combined with his wealth he was unable to be normal. Being as famous as he was since the age of 5 I would imagine that one would be a little odd from the get and while he did create a unique world around himself that many simply could not relate to or understand, it seems clear as to why. But like most people that make it to the top, we also love to bring them down. Fortunately, MJ's talent is still recognized to this day by kids today. Billie Jean as a video made MTV what it was. Before this video and "Beat It", MTV was only playing white artists whose videos were mainly concert driven or simply had no rhyme or reason to them. The art form of video being movie-like was created by MJ. From there the record industry saw video as a means of selling albums. The $$$ pushed the music industry to give larger budgets to videos from there on. But no one topped MJ's $14 million dollar budget for "Thriller". The guitarist for this song was David Williams. He is a session player on a lot of funkier, predominantly black artist albums. He was also on MJ's OFF THE WALL album.

When you listen to his music, but hear special instruments from behind that accompany the song? This special powerful music, which gives the song a special, additional charm, can be heard in Bilie Jean, Smooth Criminal, Who is it, ... A legend of legends. The voice and dance are from another planet anyway. Love from Slovenia ❤😊

So in the part ( for forty days and forty nights, the law was on her side) he is referring to the fact, that while the case and paternity was on going, ( it is that) M.J. had to pay chijld support, which may have been California law, during that time. Guys, I was 10 years old when this video came out, and I remember that afternoon perfectly. Yes, this was a breakthrough in production values although obviously videos would become more polished after a few years. I didn’t see it first on MTV. HBO had something called Video Jukebox, where they would play one or two videos after a movie so that the time slots would line up with the top of the hour. I still like this video best.
