I agree with you to a point that Prince was really the only one who could pull off his fashion style. However, it wasn't that nobody tried or thought they could pull off his style Cuz, many did try by dressing to the nine's like Prince, along with the fashion styles other music artists were wearing back in the day, my friend's. In relation to Prince there was a clothing store in most malls called the Merry Go Round in the '80's. And in '84/'85 the store exclusively carried the clothing collection made by Prince named "Purple Wear." If I remember right the store sold the complete black outfit Prince wore in the movie Purple Rain on his motorcycle with Apollonia. They also sold the white ruffled button down shirt as well as his iconic purple velvet studded long coat. Prince was no different than a few other music artists fashion styles people wore back in the '80's. Like the red plethora zipper jacket MJ wore or his rhinestone glove & socks. Not to mention all the dude's who looked like chicks that used more hair spray then most girls. And let's not forget all the girls in HS who tried their hardest to imitate & look like either Madonna or Pat Benatar. We definitely rolled in a different way back then compared to now for sure. Just saying... ++Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friends++ 🤘😜🤘

I am going to address the elephant in the room. Aside from being a huge Prince fan due to his musical genius, I appreciate the fact that this man genuinely loved women, could wear makeup and still get any woman in the room and never had any impropriety or scandal follow him around despite being openly a very sexual human being. Prince was secure in his physical appearance, his talent and manhood and it showed. Prince wrote all his own music and very often played every instrument on his songs, which in and of itself is phenomenal. The comparison between Prince and MJ is the epitome of apples and oranges.

@maryanndavis8284 Well, I wasn’t sure so I looked it up. I was kind of shocked. Prince came up with the music & sent it to Stevie Nicks to write the lyrics because it was supposed to be a country song at first. Stevie Nicks said she was so overwhelmed by the music that she didn’t feel she could write lyrics. So Prince played it at the end of a practice session & 19yo Wendy picked up a guitar & plucked a few chords & that’s how the current version originated. Prince is credited with the lyrics while Wendy is credited with the opening chords & setting the original tone for the song. I tried to get that from several sources. I haven’t seen the movie in a couple of decades but I believe the 2 females were given credit in the movie for writing the song. Thanks for the reply. I enjoy learning new things.

I think someone already kinda mentioned this, but the guitar solo you are talking about is from the 2004 Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony performance of The Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", in tribute to George Harrison, who was being posthumously inducted as a solo artist that year. Prince was also being inducted that same year. And yes, it was a great, mind-blowing solo for sure, but - and take this from a Prince fan of over 40 years, who was lucky enough to see him in concert 5 times - he played solos equal to, and far more impressive than that one, night after night, in arenas all around the world, for 35+ years. Even at rehearsals and soundchecks. He could play that kind of solo in his sleep. Talent and music flowed from him like water. It looked effortless, although it would be a disservice to him to call it that, because he spent countless hours (and his entire life, really) honing his craft And, while I understand the instinct to compare Prince and Michael Jackson, it really makes no sense. Other than them both being African-American and having the commercial peaks of their careers around the same time, they have hardly anything in common, musically or otherwise. This is not a slight to MJ in any way, but Prince was a serious, overwhelmingly talented musician in just about every way you can imagine. Michael Jackson was a performer. An amazingly gifted one, to be sure, but it's beyond comparing apples to oranges, it's more like comparing apples to lightsabers. Not much in common. Keep digging into Prince's catalog - you have much to discover!

The issue of Prince vs MJ was mostly that MJ's music was more palatible to kids, whereas Prince mostly made music for himself and by extension it was more for the adults than kids, for whom the music went over their heads figuratively-speaking. I think if you look at both as an adult, the answer is clear, but childhood nostalgia is a powerful thing. I'll never forget being at a roller rink watching Thriller for the first time on a small movie-theater style screen while we all rolled around on the rink. But at the same time, as an adult, it's pretty obvious that Prince is the best. As Stevie Wonder said: "If Michael Jackson is the King of Pop, then Prince is the Emperor."

anti-michael prince fans say the darndest things. I'm a fan of both and both have a variety of sounds that can appeal to many different listeners. to categorize mj's music as 'for children' is ridiculous on its face. many tracks explore very adult themes. a more accurate take: michael jackson had closer to universal appeal (literally global), whereas prince's music is for a smaller audience -- many of them musicians themselves.

You guys did the right thing. Asking for others opinions. Just because that question has been asked a MILLION times. And for those commenting on Michael’s “ Sexual Scandal”. This question isn’t about “ scandals” that followed either of them. Some people, mostly MJ fans, react harshly, or with lots of anger when that’s brought up. They also then point a finger at Prince, and throw his sexuality into faces of MJ critics. The FACTS are MJ was considered to be the “ King of Pop/rock”. And Prince was considered to be a “ Musical Genius”. My own opinion, being a HUGE ACDC FAN, is Prince was more than a musical genius. He was a musical Prodigy. Who spent his life acquiring knowledge of music, and mastering more than 25 instruments. I think they both died horribly early. And both had so much more to give. So how bout we just end the “ Who’s greater” question and just love them equally for what they both left the world. Princes sex life has no part in what he gave us, and MJ’s sex and personal life does not either. They are just weapons to be used by people who hate instead of love. So don’t be haters, learn to love more. Appreciate what each artist brought to the people who loved them!! And still do to this very day! That’s the gift they gave us. USE IT!!💙

Prince was overall much more talented than Michael, he played 20+ instruemtns, had an incredible voice, could dance his ass off, produced his music and others, wrote all his songs and many other hits for other stars...he was a true, multi-talented legend. Prince and MJ shouldn't be compared. They were two different artists with different agendas. MJ's goal was always sales. If he had an album sell 10 million copies, he wanted the next one to sell 15 million. That makes sense when you consider that Barry Gordy, who was first and foremost a businessman, was his mentor. MJ would wait 3 to 5 years between albums. He did this because he wanted to build anticipation which would inevitably result in more sales. Prince's goal was always his music and his artistic expression. This makes sense when you consider that his father was a jazz pianist and his mother was a lounge singer. He wanted to get his music out there as soon as he created it. This can be seen in the fact that he released 39 studio albums in a 38 year career, and some of those were double and triple albums. He also wrote and composed several albums for other artists. Yes, sales were important to him, but only in so much as they provided enough money to allow him to continue to make music. He knew some of his albums wouldn't sell as well, but he went where the inspiration took him. This is why he has an acoustic album (The Truth) and a 4 song jazz instrumental album (N.E.W.S.).

Prince came across as more than a little weird earlier in his career, when he cross-dressed and sang more or less exclusively about sex, in a hyper-sexualised way. But by Purple Rain, (and the album before it), he had switched it up and presented himself and the band as a cutting edge New Wave band, at least in terms of fashion. Meaning yes, they looked very cool at the time. He was aiming for an MJ-sized crossover and reached it with Purple Rain - the movie and the album. (Then he quickly abandoned it and did whatever he felt like for the rest of his career). This is a scene towards the end of the movie, and I think you have to watch it to fully appreciate the powerful effect this song had on the audience. As a semi-autobiographical rock’n’roll movie it still holds up - it’s how Prince was finally presented to households all over the world. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed - the live show scenes alone are worth the price of admission.

Prince and MJ are the best in their own right. MJ will forever be the "King of Pop" and Prince.... well, he was the best at the kind of music he played. Besides ALL the music for the movie Purple Rain, he also performed most, if not all the music for the movie "Batman" starring Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, and Kim Basinger. Prince always had a thing for the color purple and his attire was questionable to say the least, but blended well with the type of person he was. It's like.... once you get to know him, you forget about what he's wearing because it's just "him". Prince and the revolution later became just "Prince", and then later he changed his name to a symbol and called it "He". May I interst you in a reaction to a Finnish band named Nightwish? I was a teen in the 80s. Watching this video again was so bittersweet. Hard to believe that was 40 years ago. Regarding MJ vs. Prince, if you're talking pure musicianship then Prince wins hands down. There's still a vault filled with songs he never released. He was always, always, creating. 🎶

About the Prince or MJ question. What instruments did MJ play ? Prince played everything.

The look Prince had was an evolution of the Funk look from the 70s. Men wore platform shoes in the 70s and the funk look had a lot of tight pants, capes, and flourishes. The 60s Rock era also had a good number of celebrities that wore this ruffled shirt/ military jacket style. The Beatles had a version of this ruffle look from their Sergeant Pepper era. Jimmy Hendrix also wore clothes like this. Prince put his own 80’s twist on this theme. The lace gloves were a big thing in the 80’s, lace in general. Prince or MJ… that’s hard. They were so different. I like rock music and I love the fusion that Prince does. MJ … is MJ.

This was from the film Purple Rain (it is what the film basically leads up to.) If you want to see an astounding guitar solo by him check out his cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps (and yes w/love to see your reaction to that with Prince, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Steve Winwood). I don't want to sound like a "hater" but in answer to your question of who we like better (him or mj) - my vote is for Prince. He taught himself how to play the guitar when he was a child.

For real? Okay, here's my take and I've been a Prince friend since 1979. This man was a genius. His resume included singer, songwriter, producer, director, talent scout putting together such bands as vanity 6, Morris Day and the Time etc.. multi- instrumentalist, entertainer, dancer, fashion icon (because with all of his talent he could get away with wearing anything or next to nothing)..and I'm certain I've left something out..Welcome to the tent, the water is fine 💜🙏⚧️☔️🕊🏀👑🎹🎶🎸❤

He could play every instrument with ease & y'all need to go watch the movie Purple Rain (you'll not be disappointed). He had his own style whic was brilliant. Because I'm such a HUGE fan of Prince, I went to the movie to see it at least 8 times & then watched it over & over again when it came on cable. I've watched it over 30 something times & I'll STILL watch til this day whenever it comes on. ITS A MUST SEE! 💜💛💜💛💜💛💜

It was the Rock and Roll Hall fame in 2004. Tom Petty, Jeff Lynn (ELO), Dani Harrison, Steve Winwoood and Prince played 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps" in a tribute to George Harrison (Beatles.) I think Prince was better in a lot of different ways than MJ. MJ could sing and dance, but so could Prince as well as playing over 20 different instruments. Check out his half time performance in the 2007 Super Bowl. Some like to say that "They played football during a Prince concert."

Glad some younguns can appreciate his weird genius. My uncle insisted I learned 60s and 70s rock, and played in a minor band..but was known locally where he lived. My parents gave me the earlier. I have such an appreciation for that. How it's effected me is profound. Your parents raised you right. Subscribed. But I expect more of this. Rock on, fellas.

Prince, with very exceptions, wrote, arranged, sang and played his music by himself. On the album Purple Rain, with the exceptions of the live tracks, there was no one else on the album. Michael Jackson had some musical ability, but on Thriller for example the guys in Toto played on a bunch of those songs, Human Nature was written by, I believe Steve Pocaro of Toto. The guitar parts, Bass parts and Drums on Beat It were written and recorded by Toto members Steve Lukather and Jeff Pocaro, as well as Edward Van Halen on the guitar solo, Pocaro and Lukather write and played on the girl is mine... Michael Jackson was a great performer, and did some preliminary writing with lyrics, melody and rhythmic Ideas but Quincy Jones and a lot of other cats, had a lot to do with that album. You really can't compare Prince and Michael Jackson... Prince was so much more than a singer and performer.

I've always thought Prince is the only person who could carry off a costume like that in his day. However, back in the mid-60s, there was a group called Paul Revere and the Raiders who wore something to that and they wore the 3-corner hats, too. Twins, you need to see the movie "Purple Rain"

Prince over MJ by far, Prince is a musician, an entertainer, creative, and a showman with a wide variety of costumes. add to all of that the fact that he always surrounds himself with the best on stage, highlights them, and brings them forward like Sheena E. All you really need to do is compare the halftime performance of both. Top it all off with the fact that Prince has a wider vocal range and it is no contest.

When this album hit it blew up and most people’s reaction to his style/dress was just “he’s just Prince and that’s who he is.” It didn’t hurt that he slept with half of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. Btw, great call with the cinematic feel as this scene was straight from the movie Purple Rain. Prince all day… he was an incredible musician while Michael (great) was a performer/entertainer.

Much like today, popular stars "made" what was popular to wear. So yes, big shoulder pads, shiny outfits, puffy shirts - they were cool because artists like Prince wore them. Look at pictures of girls from the 1980s, and they all look like Madonna. There is a story that when Prince put together his band, he required them to dress "like rockstars" even off stage. He felt they had a persona to keep, whether singing or walking through a club. Another "joke" is that Prince was the only man to wear 6 inch heels and eyeliner and could still steal your girl.
