I was fourteen and it was EXTREMELY obvious to me what it was in reference to. Seems like allusion and innuendo are lost on many younger people. I wonder how long it would take then to figure out that "One-eyed Jack peeping in a seafood store" has nothing to do with shopping for ocean based proteins.

Times have changed. I was 12 when this album was released and I knew EXACTLY what DLR was singing about.🤣 No disrespect. The 70's was a very unsheltered time in which to grow up. The first time I heard this song I was 10 and actually thought it was about a man who sells ice cream. A few days later my 13 year old brother explained what the ice cream man was really selling, I loved this song even more.

Um…the tempo never changed….it didn’t speed up, it just went from acoustic with no drums or bass to an electric, amplified, all-out jam! Does everything have to be speed metal for you guys?! GEEZ! But you have to realize the song would not be nearly as good without those "slower" opening verses to set it all up so it can smack you in the face. That's the art of great songwriting. And I know that a lot of non-musician people in reactions use the word slower because they don't know what the term dynamics is all about, so I can understand what you are saying. But technically it's exactly the same tempo all the way throughout the song, Never faster, never slower. But it does start off more dynamically pulled back for sure and then it explodes. In addition, those opening verses are a tip of the hat, paying homage if you will, to the original blues music that so much of our modern music derives from. Even right down to the double entendre so characteristic of early blues music.

You’re completely off base. Don’t know what shows you saw but they weren’t Van Halen. Eddie was “well known for recording his rhythm and lead parts as one track.. no overdubs. Your comment about him needing to edit his parts together couldn’t be further from the truth.
