First Piece in the video was Inked and colored by PastelMonstaa on youtube and the second was a Patreon Sketch that I got from Arofexdracona! I just did the coloring and technically the first one was a commission while the second one was my own character. I have also changed the title since a few people said it was very confusing!

Eh, I say you both are in the wrong. Yes, you shouldn't have created a character behind their backs and you shouldn't have done a live stream about them, but the person as well shouldn't try and claim a style, and they also blocked you out of pettiness. Everyone inputs other artist styles into their own, even famous artist done it in the past, which is funny because people art style will change. At least you admitted you were in the wrong and apologize.

Kelsie's Art Dump I agree somewhat, I think if you create a GENUINELY original concept it can be copyrighted you can’t put tons of rules like “I can take it back no refund” or “you can’t make a wolf with blue ears it’s MY IDEA 😂 I have created closed spices myself but I could care less if someone else creates something similar I think all the negative stuff drives people away, just keep digging and you’ll find some good open species or really nice creators, the only way you can actually, officially make a closed species is to make one character of that species and that’s it. I just try my best to keep everyone happy and I don’t cross to many boundaries unless it’s completely idiotic (like most part of the closed species community) 😂 also sorry if this made no sense and if there are 67456 mistakes, English isn’t my first language.

The only crime with copying is if it becomes plagiarism and sold for profit as the real deal. And of course if Disney decide they don't like you.then you're also fucked. I heard of a kindergarten almost going under because they dared to have a mural of some Disney characters.

i personally don’t believe in closed species. you can’t stop people or shame people from being inspired or wanting to create something like you do. I can’t stress enough how I do not care about people being inspired and making characters like mine or anything like that. I also do not care if my OC looks like someone else’s even if I’m inspired by them because I know that they aren’t a carbon copy of someone else’s character! I make species all the time and am inspired by the things i see online, compile them, come up with ideas and I feel great about what I create because I’ve come to terms with the fact that nothing under the sun is new or fully original. Nothing. TL;DR: Don’t get worked up over being inspired, or over closed species. Do what you want and don’t be scared of the haters, unless you are actually straight up steals their work.

I am confused when artists claim art styles and species. Do they not believe in their talent? Otherwise why would it matter if someone made eyes like theirs(not traced)? What defines a style and how does one claim it? Does this mean anyone that does a Kawaii style they are technically stealing? What about halloween themes? Can someone steal a theme? Why can't people make their own versions of a species? Can you copyright a species? Because what is stopping someone going out and copyright wizards? Just recently in the Steven Universe movie a character named Spinel. If Mickey Mouse was a closed species owned by a DA character and Spinel was someone's OC you know there would be people hunting down the person who made Spinel for being a copy of Mickey Mouse. Fun Fact. Mortimer Mouse (Early version of Mickey Mouse) was made as a remake of Oswald since Walt thought Oswald was his property since he had a big part in making him but it was in fact property of the studio he was working for at the time, under contract. It was his way of sticking it to the copyright system. Not long after the Disney company when on to reconstruct the laws of copyright so that they could keep Mickey Mouse for a lot longer.(Origianaly copyright terms where about 10-ish years, now it's the life of the creator plus 70 years.) The very same copyright laws that allowed them to be able to make movies based off of fairy tales. It's technically illegal to sing the song "Happy Birthaday" outside of a home because of copyright. If it is sung in a restaurant they owners can be sued. I don't believe in owning a style or a species. I feel if someone is so wrapped up in these things they are just worried about losing a bit of income they are tricking others into thinking they owe them. Even in this video it was pointed out she was making the art work, she had the color theme ideas, she did everything, but because it was a closed species she had to ask for permission to make the art then pay someone to be allowed to do it. Also there is the fact that she bought a character, she still didn't technically own it, and the "species creator" was upset she got art done of said character she paid for. What are you paying for then? The right to look at it? The right to say you sort of own it(but it can be taken back at any time with no refund)? How many DA artists actually have a federal copyright for their species? It sounds just like those star selling scams. People can claim you bought the character but they could sell the same character to a lot of people and what is stopping them? You don't own it as far as they are concerned. Maybe I am wrong, maybe I am missing something, this is why I am confused. Can anyone explain this to me?

I think it's a very good thing you're admitting in which ways you were guilty. You can't change the past but you're taking responsibility for what you did, which does talk lengths about your growth as an artist and a person. Yeah, it's like... So much miscommunication usually happens when you're that angry, and yep, talking about the other artist as well. There are definitely times in everyone's life where we wish we acted more mature than what we did. But it takes courage to recognize it and say it. Thank you sm for sharing! This reminds me of an artist wayyy in the early days I was first on Instagram. When I first made my IG account, a comment was made on one of my first watercolor posts “lol the coloring on this looks like a 5 year old did it” so, okay. I deleted the comment. A few months later this guy started following me. He made decent art, still had some anatomy stuff to work on but he was good. Anyway. We decided to do an art.. duet? (I honestly can’t remember what they’re called, it’s when one artist does lineart and the other colors it.) Anywho, we did Cuphead and Mugman. At the time, I was broke and only did traditional art. I was in charge of the sketch and inking it, so I did, and spent a lot of time adding textures and inked shading with this Cuphead and Mugman piece. When the guy took it, he traced over the outlines of it, colored and shaded it, and when he posted it, he only credited me for the ‘sketch’ and that he did the lineart and coloring. I approached him saying ‘dude, I made the lineart with extra texture and shading details and you covered all of it up. Why did you trace all of it?” Well, he apparently thought that inking ‘wasn’t an art form’ and ‘fixed my “lineart”’ for me. I made him take the post down before he blocked me. But, I had a realization. That guy who insulted that one watercolor post? That was the same guy who discredited me.

Major points to you for admitting where you were in the wrong and recognizing it. Admitting things like that is hard and I feel like it shows that you have matured since then. I definitely think you weren't the ONLY one in the wrong here to an extent. Kind of a lot of pettiness all around, but I think the other artist could have handled the situation better, too. Particularly on the style bit but DEFINITELY on the 'subconsciously copying' thing. That reaches a little into ridiculousness imo.

I wish more people knew about this, because I think it would change a lot for the better: Your brain is not done forming until about 25-26. Those last few years of development in your early 20's are EVERYTHING. Mentally, you really are still a kid. I remember learning so much then, I was almost a different person every year. This is why I think we need to rethink the whole 18 years old being the magic adult number when you suddenly know better enough to smoke or date some predatory creep twice your age. It's a mich bigger problem than a lot of people realize. When someone grows out of something, they seem to just forget and stop caring (until they have a spawn and then it's suddenly relevant again 🙄).

Full offense, closed species are dumb and no one can 'steal' an art style, I've seen many videos and heard many arguments for those and no one has been able to give me a valid reason why these are considered okay, btw I'm someone that with good reason am always willing to admit I'm wrong and change my mind, but this is one of those issues where it just doesn't change a thing for me, like in as fine if a clothing company made a shirt with one side having a long sleeve and the other a short sleeve and claim other companies cant do the same, it's just ridiculous.

Ok listen there is no such thing as Art Style Theft. No one can really own the art style. The art itself? Tracing? Recolor? Drawing someone's character and claiming its yours? Yes that is all stealing. However drawing a style that is similar to someone else? Its not stealing. In fact many people have art styles similar to each other, and many can learn to grow as an artist by taking a little inspiration from someone's art style then adding it to their current style.

Sounds like you both where petty. Taking inspiration from other's people art is how you develop your own style.Telling someone to change their art just cause something is similar/same so ignorant. Stalking is petty. Blocking someone that isn't activity hurting you is petty. And honestly, being hurt by the fact that you loved the CS so much you wanted to make your own is petty. They should be glad even if the answer is still no.

Me 16 minutes in: Style stealing doesn’t exist. Unless you trace, it’ll never be the same because no matter what, your style is formed by the media you watch, or how you study art. Two people can have very similar styles and not even know the other exists. In the Warriors community, I know people who were like, “Oh you stole x person’s style.” To another artist. I’ve been compared to some people and my style looks nothing like theirs. I have a friend that goes: “I hope you don’t mind, I like the way you do this, can I use it?” Like.. I don’t care. If you’re inspired by me, by all means go for it! I’m flattered. As long as you don’t trace or claim my art as your own, I don’t care. No one style is completely unique. It can always be compared to someone else with even the slightest similarity.

I`m a kid. Y`know, middle teens, and last year around this time i remember the person i was. And i do think i've grown as a person, last year i was just brewing in my own anger and shouting at my Mother and being a dick about things, and now i at least try to be a good person. I try not to be mean to people and i don`t get offended if someone insults something i like. I noticed it cause the other day my friend said they hated a song from a band i`m super attached to, a small thing, i know, but last year i wouldn't have talked to them for a month. I realised that people don`t really think too much before they speak. And most people don`t have bad intentions, especially if you don`t know them, or are a close friend~ Not saying there aren`t bad people out there but i think the majority of people aren`t going out of their way to insult you.

This was a good video, my dude. I have a similar issue where I did regrettable and awful things to people, I was a massive jerk just because I could be. I was fueled by the person I was dating at the time, and he liked to bully people too. It got so bad that people thought I was just someone he made up to give himself numbers. And this was only 5 years ago, give or take a few months. After I realized what I was doing, I dumped him and went around apologizing to people. Some forgave me, some lectured me, some acted superior because I was finally "giving in", and others never responded. To this day, my behaviors still haunt me and I have nothing but regrets for the way I treated folks. I still have days where I feel really down because one of the people I bullied was a super good artist and I would've loved to collaborate with her and learn from her as a friend. My ex also tried to "apologize" but he just went right back to his old ways within the year. Now I've got pretty bad anxiety when faced with conflict, whether it be in person or online, because I remember how I was and how much time I spent being a massive dick, just fighting endless battles with people over petty garbage. I just sort of shut down all conflict as fast and as peacefully as I can because I physically can't handle it, I get sick to my stomach and have really bad shakes like I'm freezing cold. Anyone who says people can't change are wrong. If you know what you did and you actually own up to it, you've changed. Whether the people you've hurt choose to forgive you or not is their decision and doesn't have a bearing on whether you yourself have changed, they just may not want to open up again, and that's fine. It is what it is. Thanks for this video Michie, it's a good lesson!

A comment on when you said “i didn’t think it was bad to incorporate someone else’s style into my own.” That’s not a bad thing and is a key factor in how a lot of people grow and mold their art! It’s a bad thing when you copy every aspect and say it’s your own, but taking inspiration isn’t a bad thing to look down upon... that’s how an artist can grow and learn. Art is something that bounces from one thing to the other and incorporating many different aspects from many different artists is what helps sculpt and mold your unique style so I don’t think you were in the wrong for taking inspiration and using it to help grow your work

I admire this kinda honesty. Its very rare you see someone actually admitting to mistakes now a days and i think this video sends a good message that we grow and we are different the more time goes by and that honesty is key to maturaity. Yeah we all were assholes i mean I myself through this video was reflecting as well and athough art wise the worst thing ive done was repost w/out credit nonart wise i was an asshole child. I remember it came to a point of my childhood where i started drama in elementary bc i was bored with my uneventful short life. It was immature and it was douchy and i remember i stressed alot to the point where i refused to go to school bc of said drama (shocker i wonder why). Now thats a bit different from your story bc technecally i was a child. But i count it as an asshole move bc i kneeew what i was doing. Now a days im still a bit of an immature child but I've gotten out of that phase of literally fearing no consequences and today i want to grow better. But if i wanna grow older i needa admit to mistakes and make up for it by learning from it. Good video 👌👌 gotta love that honesty

I gotta say, I don’t really believe in stealing styles or ‘closed’ species. Sure, I have an original style (which takes various inspiration from others), and a few species of my own, but I don’t see a point in guarding those things. I don’t think I’d be thrilled if someone were to copy my entire style, or make characters in a species of mine w/o permissions or credit or whatever, but I don’t see why I wouldn’t let someone use assets. If someone stole an entire character of mine, or story, I’d be reasonably upset, but I don’t think I could say the same for a species or style assets. (but yes if someone says not to use assets, respect that or try to work something out civilly depending on the situation) I don’t know, if you disagree please explain!

Technically you were in the right. You can NOT own/copyright an art style. So if you liked a certain aspect of someones art, you have every right to use it. And with the closed species, you had every right to have made your own personal one, as long as you never post it, they cant do anything about it. As long as you keep it to yourself, your not freaking hurting anyone. I've made up my own MYO of a closed species that I really love, but I've never posted it to the public, and the artists know about it, as Ive shown it to them. Since I haven't made it public and just keep it all to myself they don't care. All I'm saying is that it's complete bull-shit what that artist did to you.

oh my god i used to be sooo cringy and stupid back in the day!! warning; this will be long(ish): *SO* i had a very dumb drama on dA back in 2018(witch is not even so long ago oof) where i traced art and kinda took other people's designs and just posted them all mashed up in one random character. i got A TON of hate and i was so embarrassed and felt like an idiot because like, what did i even expect?? i deleted the traced stuff and started doing my own art and slowly people forgave me and now i'm okay with everyone and people seem to enjoy my art. usually it doesn't turn out so well than my case and i'm super grateful the drama didn't blow up. also baaaack back when i was smol kid i stole designs(not posting them tho phew) and made them my own and then i flexed to my friends for being so good at designing characters :'D my characters always looked exactly like my favorite's from series i liked and i thought in was so cool. i believe everyone had this phase at some point. it was very cringy and kinda stupid but thank god i didn't post any of them or had a following anywhere. it's a good thing you can admit your mistakes because honestly, some people just keep saying they did nothing wrong because they just don't want to admit their mistakes. you're one of my fave youtubers and i love listening these while drawing

Hi there, thanks for the video its nice to hear things of this nature that aren't normally shared. I think its right to face shameful actions directly if you want to be a better you, clearly this moment was significant and left lasting impressions but I think its ok to be a little less severe on your younger self. While legally we are adults at 18, we are actually still developing the brain into our mid-20s. We are all of us more likely to act irresponsible in these years, its normal. And while of course we shouldn't give ourselves a free pass, its fine to be a little more understanding. I have a question about the conflict, why do you believe style theft is so important?

I've had a similar experience with another artist I used to be friends with for 2 yearsish. I used to have a KZbin Channel with a moderate amount of subs before I deleted it due to being blackmailed and threatened, and we met when I was starting to become noticed. Everything was fine until I started to become more and more popular. I felt like I was on a throne, and all of my subjects were under me. Because of this mentality, I began to treat the friends, which included the artist, like utter trash, constantly being toxic, manipulative, and always demanding I have my way they do as I say. Eventually I said something about the artist, and she found out through another one of our friends, and she eventually went onto my server and turned everyone against me, which I deserved for everything I did to people, but I think it was a bit extreme considering the thing I said which I won't say, but if it eventually got through to my head I was a bad influence and friend, then I'm glad it happened. I found new friends and left one day with those new friends as I kicked my previous ones out. While I was with my new friends, we decided to pick on the artist and go to their server to spy on them. They eventually found out and that made things worse. Things were quiet for a bit, but I was still spiteful and talked smack about them, which I shouldn't have done and just let things go and move on. But nope. Things were quiet until one day, her mods (which are my ex friends) followed me on twitter. They posted their dumb memes to me, and I just blocked them. This was recently, actually. By now a few months have pasted and I believe I've matured for the better. I kinda realise I'm almost off to college and I needed to grow up, and it's best if I just stay in my group and let them be them, as I think they're better off without me, and I don't deserve their companionship. But it was weird. They began to follow me and I had no idea how they found me, since I change usernames regularly, and I changed again so they wouldn't find me, so they aren't hurt by me again. I told my new friends, and they took a look in their server as they still talked to some old friends are were in there. The artist had managed to track down my new username somehow and told my ex friends, which meant they all came after me. This was incredibly petty, considering the fact they had said they wanted nothing to do with me, and that they wanted to forget me, and I wanted to move on, but I understood why she'd do that, as I had felt the same towards people in her shoes too. I DMed one of her friends and politely asked to pass a managed on to the artist to leave me alone and that I meant no trouble. After this my friends told me that the artist and their friends started to freak out, and the artist wanted to speak to me. She eventually got hold of my Instagram and messaged me an apology. I accepted it and moved on. I didn't argue like I would have a year ago. It doesn't take long for a person to change. If I didn't change I would have sent my friends after them, but I didn't. I just asked them to stop. I've been told they make stupid memes out of the fact I deleted my channel and they talk about how I used to be, but I don't care. I used to do the same things. They'll get over me eventually. All I'm focused on right now is my art. I mean I'm getting more serious about it now I'm moving to college. I'm glad you spoke about this Michie, it really spoke to me. I hope to make content too in the future and I wanted to address my past mistakes for a while now to show my audience (if I ever have one) of how not to treat people. It bites you back eventually.

Can I use this comment section as a place to admit the time when I fucked up and when I was a bad person? When I was in sixth grade, I was extremely transphobic. For some reason, I was much more bothered by AFAB trans people than AMAB trans people and I’m not sure why. One of my best friends at the time was trans and we got into so many stupid arguments because I refused to give him the one common courtesy of just using his preferred pronouns (a side note, not all of our arguments were about that because he was very pro-life, oddly enough, and even back then, I was very pro-choice so I do think I was right to stand up for my beliefs in that situation. Not that that excuses the way I treated him because of his gender). I would often mock people who identified as anything other than male or female and I would call them “toxic tumblr SJWs” or something like that. I also insisted that there were only four sexualities (heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, and asexual). And if you think this attitude came from my parents or anything I learned from the internet, you’d be completely wrong. I’ve grown up in a very liberal environment for most of my life and I just decided one day that my beliefs weren’t going to align with that anymore. I still honestly have no goddamn idea where that mentality came from there, especially since I myself am a trans man now. I just wish that I could apologize to that person that I hurt because I know all the other times I did, it was only half-hearted and I wasn’t ready to admit how awful of a person I had been to him. I feel like I’ve become much more accepting of all types of people now, but I can’t undo the damage I did all that time ago. I just hope to improve in the future and move on from my past mistakes, not like they never happened but because I know that they don’t define who I am anymore. It feels really good to get all that off my chest, even if it’s just in a random comment section. If anyone is reading this, feel free to use this comment to talk about a mistake you made in the past, and we’ll all forgive you and be proud of you for admitting it.💗

They were confused and I showed them some vent art, and they got really mad. I don’t know why they got mad to this day, but they blocked me, I blocked them, had a breakdown and freaked out, made a bunch of posts about it, and almost deactivated. Looking back, I was such an idiot. I later deactivated my account because I didn’t want people to remember me on da and it stressed me out to keep the account open. Yeah I’m glad I left when I did. I like adopts, but I have mixed feelings on closed species. While I do think that a lot of closed species are really well-thought out and original, at the same time, people tend to get very protective and worked up over them... To an extent, I understand why artists are protective of their ideas, style, etc. BUT I also think that many artists take it too far. Defensive artists can cause a lot of dumb drama over their "copyrights". I know a lot of artists that are like "do NOT reference my work in any way" but I personally find that to be really stupid. Yeah, don't trace or copy someone's work, but referencing is something that every artist can and should do. I don't know... Just my opinion on this sort of stuff.

While some closed species can be cool, if done right. I feel like the idea idea of a "closed" species is fucking stupid. If someone wants to make an oc that's part of the same species you made, there's nothing you can do to stop them, and I don't think it should be. You shouldn't have to pay someone to make another character in a species. However, I think it should at least be polite to credit the person whose species you used. Though, at the end of the day, no closed species is completely original and you can't copyright a "species" like you can a character.

Makes me think of how I've been petty about something for probably too long now. Someone I used to be best friends with abandoned me; (Going into why would take forever) we did and still do use the same template for characters sheets. I didn't make this template, but heavily edited it into its current form. It's been four years and I'm still mad about them using it still and not finding something to distinguish them-self. I admit I would go on their page and make similar stuff when I'm lacking inspiration just cause I could.(And cause I can't deny that it was good) Got called out eventually, I blocked them so I can't see their stuff casually anymore. Been trying just get over it, move on finally and do my own thing without being a petty bitch. It still hurts after years, losing someone I loved like a sibling, but they clearly were fine letting me go (and blocking me everywhere) so easily. The kicker is that we were both adults when this happened, they are 5+ years older then me and that make it seem even worse. I need to move forward with my life and just get let it go. I really, really do.

Tbh I think you’re both pretty accountable. I’ve never been in support of closed species for that reason, mostly because having things that are actually 100% unique is really hard. An artist can absolutely hold attachment to a character of species, but I feel like paying for the species as opposed to art OF the species is kinda weird. You definitely shouldn’t have copied the artist and definitely not made that stream, and likewise that artist was kind of frustrating to hear about. They also clearly handled the situation wrong as well, especially about the art style thing. Personally I find style theft super silly. I know artists who have styles exactly like other artists with absolutely no connection or knowledge of the other at all, so the “you’re subconsciously copying” thing is hilarious to me

Unpopular opinion but bro ngl if someone wants to say I can’t draw something then either sue me or shut up. Like the whole adoptable thing sounds like a scam to me but then again I’ve had another artist claim I “stole” their species when I didn’t know that they existed and I wasn’t going to erase my characters just because they looked similar

This entire thing is dumb. Making your own character of the species, kept private, is literally not an issue. Taking an element of someone's art style and incorporating it into your own is literally how every artist (subconsciously or not) grows. This person was petty and I can understand how they aggravated you. That doesn't excuse being petty in return, but it's understandable

Okay first off. There is no such thing as “art style” theft, cause if that was a thing then nobody would be able to draw. Speaking of which there is no such thing as being “original”. (Unless you were born on an island alone with no contact with other media) But there is a thing called being inspired or drawing inspiration. So for that artist to tell you to stop drawing in your style because it was too “similar” is bull. They have no right to do or say that. The only way I could say that your committing “art style theft” is if you took her drawings and copied or traced it.

Amen, I came here to say this. The concept is just so illogical but also kinda toxic, bc it makes ppl believe they can control what other people draw. That's why it's a concept that bullies love to use - you can ALWAYS argue that something is similar to the way you draw (bc something always will be similar - there's a finite way to draw chins!) and mess with another artist. Saying 'you have to change the way you draw noses/lips/pupils whatever because its' MINE' is such a widely unreasonable, conceited and preposterous demand!

On an alt account for reasons (Sorry if this is confusing, I have writing problems) What a lot of people don't understand is that when you copy someone's art style it can hurt them a lot. I'm a decently popular artist and my art style has been copied a lot and it's annoying as these people are usually older than me or they don't want to change. The worst part is when people copy your own art, making them popular so more and more people copy your art style, making it so your art loses value as its no longer 'original' in your sphere. This is what has happened in the emo dog community. I know nothing is 'original' and we all copy an art style once in our lives, but what people don't understand is that it hurts or annoys a lot of popular artists. Sorry if this is worded wrong or no one can understand
