I feel bad for the management getting fired, however, I'm surprised the exmanagement didn't bend the rules and let the resident put on deadbolts until creep gets freaking arrested, like that's ridiculous. Thank god that guy freaking got his ass kicked and put to jail.

The key this about having it is true, but owners have it. Let's say they have a maintenance check, the owner would be there to unlock the door after knocking on the door saying who it was. But for that kind of thing, they would give u 24 hour notice before going in too. But they dont just come in before saying anything or knocking

I dealt with this type of things when I was younger. Our landlord had a brother come live with in the apartment complex, and my mom noticed that this guy might’ve moved her stuff around in our apartment and even fixed the stuff in my closet (mostly kids toys and all that). Well one day I accidentally locked the door and had to get the extra key and once we checked out extra key was gone and I felt very worried when seeing that and figured that guy had our key and that’s how he was able to get into the apartment. My mom also had a thing to defend herself when we went in cause we were nervous someone would be in there. And she caught him moving her cloths out of the laughed room dryer or washer and it was the weirdest thing that happened and I’m happy we left.

I used to live in a complex that had something similar happen, but there wasn't a lawsuit and most of it wasn't actually reported because management was teaming up with the maintenance guy doing it as well as stealing a lot of money from the owners of the complex. It went on for years before the company found out (they lived on the other side of the country) and the only reason they did find out is because somebody went to corporate frustrated with their apartment basically falling apart.

In apartmemts, it is normal for the repair guy or the super to have keys for all apartments. The reason for this is, for example, if a sink or something is leaking in someone's apartment and they aren't home, and someone else lives below them, repair meeds to be able to get in there before it causes damage to the apartment below as well. If the tenant isn't home, those keys should only be used in emergencies. I'm sorry this happened to you

The title made me think of the fact that one of my parent's former landlords got arrested by the FBI. Shitty landlords are shitty. The "exploded sink" story made me think of the fact that the shower above our apartment in our last apartment leaked so badly that the ceiling of our bathroom dripped. Oh god, upon hearing you say "walked in" I know I for sure would have ended up hitting him with my "fuck off" stick, a 6ft walking stick that lives by my desk because I'm paranoid and jumped at every little sound when we lived in an apartment. If they came in without knocking I would have super freaked out and just slammed him with it because I DID know it was illegal for anyone to enter the apartment. Also CHEESE AND CRACKERS the fact that the man worked on your sink when you were asleep on the couch I would also have felt EXTREMELY unsafe and told them that I would have asked to be let out of my lease, because HOLY SHIT that just really is horrible.

It's 💯% legal to change locks and NOT give a key to owner or mgmnt unless it's otherwise specified in your lease. State of CA.

See if management can sue the company for being fired if an employee works and is part of a lawsuit of said employer. According to California employment law you cannot be fired. They should look into am employment law firm.

This reminds me of our landlord, he didn't really care about the apartment at all. Like instead of replacing a rusted (it was chipping in places) door with a broken doorknob, he hired a painter and painted the door. The furnace inside of our house was actually not good, it almost put my dad on fire a couple of times. The roof was leaking, which cause our ceiling to get damaged and then cause the ceiling to get mold. Mold that could cause all of us to get sick, especially for my dad who have problems with his lungs. People actually broke into the basement, stealing stuff especially my dad's tools (especially a car jack, which apparently was involved with a crime so my dad couldn't get that back) the first floor neighbors would washed the floor with bleach. Bleach + metal= rust. Almost hundreds of dollars of tools just gotten destroyed and stolen. Then, the landlord actually kicked all of the tenants (especially one that lived in that apartment for almost 20 years) when we all only had about three months. When he should have told us 10 months before hand. So that forced us to look for apartments or houses to live, which then another shit hit the fan which also caused us to go south because we had been offered a place. So yeah. That my landlord story.

TBH we did do something like this. Cause it was the only way to feel safe. When my husband would go to work. He would put up a stool we have by the door with a box ontop. So if it were to open it would make a noise. It was seriously the only way I could sleep somedays

The shit he did goes beyond " Well he's my sisters child and I promised her... / He is a v close friend" stuff. It's one thing to bail him out and entirely another when everyone tried to move out which should've lost them a lot of money.

Honestly, if this was me, I'd find a work-around for not being able to put a lock on my door. After all that shit that Creep did (and was continuing to do), I'd have moved some damn furniture to block the door off when I'm home. Someone invading my home when I'm sleeping is literal nightmare fuel. My belongings would be hidden away, I'd have a bell on the door, my phone (specifically its camera) would always be within reach, the whole nine yards to ensure I know what's happening in my own home

When I was younger we also lived in apartment complex and then we got rob one day. We honestly believe it was one of the Maintenance workers cause these people have the key to our house. Shady stuff can happen just like that

God that's terrifying. I live in a college residency (which is basically an apartment complex for college students, less expensive and easier to access), and our repair people actually have the keys to each apartment in case we aren't. Which is SUPER creepy, and even though none of the repair men were like Creep so far, I hate knowing that they can just walk in and do whatever they want. They don't even respond to our emails anymore, we just get a visit from the repair guys at random. Luckily they're obligated to be in a pair to kind of keep an eye on each other to prevent theft.

Yeeeeeah... normally people don't just waltz into someone's home unannounced... It is normal for them to have keys though, for when you request for them to spray for bugs and such, but they don't normally keep them on hand aside from management for specific reasons. One person should NOT have everyone's keys all the time.

This is so messed up! I'm sorry you had to deal with this. This actually used to happen at my old apartment... maintenance would just walk into my apartment unannounced. Despite me stating that they needed to schedule their visits with me and me blatantly stated that they do not have permission to enter my apartment, I would be woken up at 8 in the morning, on multiple occasions, to maintenance people in my apartment. And it always happened when I was home alone and asleep, which is very unsettling as I couldn't be aware of my suroundings:/

usually in apartments, management has a master key. and theyre suppose to give a literal 24 hr notice before doing /any/ kind of maintenance if its not already reported on so people can figure out what to do with water/heat/etc for the next day. the only times theyll enter your apartment is if youre not home, or you dont answer your door. so. its still unnerving to wake up to pest control/maintenance in your room, but i sleep all day Q _ Q
