The only thing seperating MLMs from pyramid schemes is the fact that MLMs involve a product that you CAN make money off of. MLMs fit every single criteria for pyramid scemes except for that one point. If you even take a look at any MLM "company's" handbook or whatever, the majority of it is legitimately about how to recruit and manipulate other people. Literally over 99% dont just not make money, but they end up LOSING money. You're stastically more likely to make money in a pyramid scheme.

Man, I hate MLMs so much. I'm so glad that people are talking about this now. Actually, my aunt, when she was in college in the late 90s-early 2000s, got into a pyramid scheme/MLM and it completely and utterly ruined her financially. She didn't have money to keep going? Just get a credit card and borrow money! You'll make it back! Those loans you got out for college? Why waste it on college when you'll make so much more money if you invested that loan into this company! Oh, you can no longer afford your house and you're homeless now and are leaving the MLM? Well, you failed because you didn't try hard enough. It is completely and utterly your fault and you should feel ashamed of yourself. Absolutely disgusting.

I'm embarrassed to admit it but I fell for the Mary kay thing last year. I knew it was a pyramid scheme but my "leader" treated me so nice and made it sound amazing. My husband is in the air force and we live on base. I felt pressured to contribute and didn't feel like I could get any other job where we moved. My leader treated me like family up until I decided to leave. I met her husband and they had us over for dinner and another girl (the one who recruited me) was super nice. I learned quick and jumped out before spending too much money but they pressured me to stay in. I avoided their calls and texts. My breaking point was when my leader told me that I had another month of active membership (you have to sell 500 and its counted as 250 then you become active, so when you sell 500 you still have another 250 to sell) and you're supposed to get 4 months of active membership before you have to sell that amount again (not combining the months, just sell 500 in one month regardless of what you have sold between those 4 months or you have to sell the 750 again) Anyways, I didn't have another month and couldn't order anything with the 50% discount so the $200 order that I put in I had to pay full price and full shipping and didn't get any money. I paid more than what my customers had given me even with charging them tax and shipping. Needless to say, I'm so embarrassed by it and my husband still makes jokes about it and holds it over my head. Roughly 400 down the drain and nothing to show for it but a huge box of MK shit. And now I'm a tattoo apprentice. So I guess it worked out 😂 dark times Quick edit too- she also tried to get me to get the credit card after I told her I lost money because SHE told me I had another month and I said that's bullshit ma'am and hung up 😂 Last I heard from her was 2 months ago. Ever couple months she trys to get me to come back. they're so sneaky

My best friend's older brother tried to get both me and his sister into one, as well as other family members into one. His sister still lived with their mother, helping her make in meet and he knew money was tight for me. I have a tendency to act stupid around people who expect me to be. So I shocked him when I called him out on his bs. I only agreed to go because it was the only way for my friend to see her new born nephew, and she didn't want to go alone. I hate it. He was newly married to a woman with 3 kids who came from money and just had one, living in a house above their means and begging for money from everyone else to support them!
