When I was in the Invader Zim fandom, I was writing a fanfic for my IZ character, I went to the fourms page, made a fourm searching for a artist I could commission to make the cover for it. I got several people wanting to take the job. I picked a guy, he asked for half pay, pay for the rest later, so I did. Dude, that was like 2 years ago, still never got it.

Ugh... There is this person who I often commissioned. I commissioned her a art piece that was the most expensive thing i EVER commissioned. So I payed her beforehand, and she said she would get started. So 3 months later, I asked if there were any updates, because I do understand artists should take their time as I am an artist myself. She told me "you never commissioned me that. You only sent money to my paypal account for that recent YCH you claimed." I was so confused. Maybe I AM just thinking things...? I checked my paypal transaction history and... There she was. The transaction I had made. I didn't bother to say anything, but I think it's too late now.

oh man that sucks ?? you should try to contact her again (take screenshots of any evidence before you talk to her in case she deletes comments), and if there isn't any luck just try to make a paypal claim. i don't know if it's too late for that, but even if it doesn't technically let you, still try contacting paypal directly -- since it's a service, it should work. also, credit card companies can sometimes do refunds as well. good luck /:

Me too, but I get why TD didn't. I mean, like they said, if you call out a popular artist (or a popular person in general), the little shitweasels from their fanbase will come harrass you. I mean, even the nicest, sweetest people have their fans do it. Not because they ask (because most people when finding this out will get mad and tell fans to stop), but because fanbases are like a wild animal. Harmless most the most part, but uncontrollable.

You can't legally reveal the identity of the said artists or you could get into some problems with the artists and stuff. I don't fully understand the concept but if you thought about it, if someone found out that they were telling people to avoid you and you made a living off of like commissions and stuff, I'd assume there would probably be a lot of unnecessary drama I know this is a bit late, just a bit

I was scammed by 2 artists. I will not name drop them because I don't wanna "ruin" their careers...like it has been ruined in my eyes. One was when I payed for a full OC (front and back view) from scratch. All I got was a basic sketch but I never got the full art I payed for . The second was basically the same thing. 2 separate artists ripped me off on the same OC.

If that ruins their career than its their own fault. IF you speak up, than at least you are giving the artist a chance to fix the issue and hopefully learn that "hey, scamming people isn't worth it, I learned my lesson" - best case scenario but better than people not having some kind of incentive to be vary of the artist and save their money. Not everyone can afford commissions and some people save for months to commission an artist, to get screwed over. Without even knowing its a possibility from that artist is the worst :(. @Victor Vera I am sorry that you got scammed, it really sucks. I just do hope you say something even if there's negativity your way, because at least 1 person that sees might be saved from a scam.

Never ever go below $5, even if your starting out. I suggest going to the artist lounge subreddits and ask, post a typical piece you would do and ask about pricing and people will help you.

Calculate your hourly wage. I know it’s been 2 years and you’re probably not just a “decent” artist anymore, but if I were you, I’d calculate prices as minimum wage x how many hours you’ve put into a piece. The better your art is, the higher your hourly wage should be. Good luck.

i commissioned an artist about 6 months ago when she was going through a tough time because i thought her art was awesome and i wanted to support her. i sent her a message recently asking her if she had forgotten about it since she had opened and closed commissions multiple times in the period i had heard nothing back, but she said she hadn't forgotten and it had been pushed back. this is my first commission i've actually had an artist do for me, so i'm not really sure if this kind of thing is normal, but i wish i could just get a refund at this point. i would love to give my money to someone who is more willing to finish the art within a reasonable amount of time/actually give me updates about what's happening.

Aww that's awful to hear. That is NOT common practice to not contact and push something back without telling you. Unfortunately I doubt she'll ever get around to it. The thing about this sort of situation is it would be okay had no payments been made or has she offered to do something for free. Ask for your money back politely or set a date you need it by. Best way to ask for a refund.

i have a story of how i was scammed from an artist, now im in the pony community so i wanted to commission somebody of my main pony oc when i came across this really good artist, i commissioned them for a fullbody fully shaded with a background, i understand that something like that does take alot of time but what happened was they started to give me every excuse in the book when i asked them about my commission after a whole month, when i asked that they finish it by next week they said i was rude and that they had a life and college and that they were busy, i asked them then why the hell did you accept my commission if your so damn busy?? they didn't respond to me. Another full month goes by and i ask them, hey it's been two months now are you even doing my commission?? they said that they haven't even started and that they would start with in that day.... another month goes by.. it's December, i send them one finale message asking and demanding that if they don't finish it before Christmas that i demand a full refund, they posted the commission before Christmas and half assed it, it still looked like it was in it's sketching stages for crying out loud! i just said thanks and unfollowed them and that was it, i want back to see if they were still around and they moved accents. Never again will i commission that person, they were so rude and told me every excuse in the book as to why they couldn't do my commission

Scam artists could really break reputations for those artists who aren't even scammers. I really hope for the better of the art community. Bringing awareness is the best thing. It would also benefit commissioners.

Only issue there is that the back of a character / person, has a lot less detail than the front. IE face, bust and such. So when someone tells me that they are adding another 100 dollars to basically draw my characters backside and ass, which takes me not much time at all, I basically go "Nope, absolutely not".

I watched both of your videos now regarding both sides scamming the other and it reminds me of literally two situations that are happening right now. Last year I decided to commission a wonderful artist on Tumblr, but I've never seen anything of that till now. The artist is uploading regularly, opening and closing up commissions all the time and I asked like 4 times, if there is a possibility that she forgot my commission. "No no, I didn't forget you! I will get it done as soon as I can." I'm an artist myself so I have ALOT of patience, when it comes to artists and them taking their time with my commissions. Sometimes you are just stuck with your style, have personal problems or you are just not in the mood for drawing. I'm absolutely fine with that. But in July it's a WHOLE YEAR since I commissioned them. So glad that I didn't pay anything until now, would've definitely asked for a refund. The 2nd situation is pretty much the same. Commissioned the artist -> send references -> got the okay -> Never heard anything back again, but asked multiple times. I don't really like to commission an artist anymore tbh, if this keeps happening.

I once got scammed in an art trade, so i asked a popular artist if they wanted to art trade, they agreed, i gave them my reference sheet, they gave me theirs, i worked HARD on my side, and they said they were ''working on it'' and a month later i asked about it on the EXACT SAME COMMENTS SECTION of the post where they agreed to art trade, they acted like they had no idea what i was talking about. I think it's funny how most people don't like talking about entitlement among artists. The fact that these people have a skill does not change the fact that they are running a BUSINESS. I think lots of artists go into making money off their art without first understanding the responsibilities involved with being a business owner. Also, as for your friends, I would tell them to open disputes with PayPal. If they used PayPal Business then they have a bit of buyer protection in this sort of scenario.

Commissioning experiences with most artists in my experience over the years has been far from perfect. Awesome video!:) I am an artist too:) I do more of realistic style and portraiture :) Yeah there’s definitely scamming in all areas of the artist community. Most are good people, but there’s a few bad apples for us to definitely ones to be aware of. In the tattoo community being a tattoo collector as well, the industry is also trying to clean up the dishonest bad apples. It’s more of where they force their clients into on going sessions. For a project that should only take one session. The catch is they don’t complete the work and the client is walking around with a half a done piece. While they demand more money that was never agreed on initially. Also deposits can be a hassle too. Which in some ways is scary since that is permanent art on ones body. All in all I agree and can relate to what you are sharing:) I also keep all my screen shots too:) It’s amazing how yes the sheeple fans don’t speak up on it. Thank you for bringing this to light!:)

I commission people for art a lot. Usually people I know in real life and not strangers. This video pretty much Summarized why I only almost always commission real life friends. My icon/Masscott chibi is actually a commissioned work from my friend/sister (A friend I consider my sister.)I'm a writer and roleplayer so I have a lot of OCs, but I can't art for shit. I really wish more artists were trust worthy for that reason.

For me as a commissioner (it's been really hard for me to get myself to learn to draw due to my disorder that causes consistency issues for me), I've been commissioning artists online for over 3 years now. And I've pretty much seen it all. But in terms of getting 'screwed' over, it's not really that I actually get scammed. But the thing that's been most frustrating for me in the commission process is when an artist doesn't do exactly what I want them to do or they intentionally miss certain details that I had already told them about in the beginning for the sketch. And then they don't go back and actually fix the work (to cut corners). Or especially redraw some things. Even when I give them all of my details before talking about pricing and money, Very rarely does an artist ask me for any clarification on anything in my info that I type up. And even when I tell them to let me know about this because I also have to explain some things in text because I'm not always able to find exact visual references for what I'm looking for on a detail. If I had the option to commission or already knew a trustworthy but also responsible skilled artist in person, I'd definitely go to them all the time instead. Because I'd have the freedom to see the cartoon character drawn right in front of my own eyes and also let them know right then and there about something on the work. But I don't know any in person or really have any friends, and I also live in a small city to top it off.

On this site I do art on, they have a function where you can send the payment but the artist has to physically accept the "trade" to get the money. Whenever someone commissions me, I tell them the prices and they can send me the trade but I won't accept it until I have the art finished and made sure they liked it. Also $300 for a reference sheet?? Mine are like $35 at most, sometimes more depending on what extras people want added on. I don't know if she's still popular, or even an artist on DevArt, but this chick named ASHRYN screwed me out of $150, literally 15yrs ago, when I was existing on fixed disability of $550/month!! I was supposed to get a FULL LARGE SKETCHBOOK of sketches, inked pieces, etc. & after almost a year of arguing, haggling, getting excuse after excuse, and I ended up with a digital sketch of a basic character with a few boring fill-in colors, no shading or detail or background, took her all of 5 mins & she didn't even sign it!! Put me off of ever buying art online again!

I was selling animation commissions, and when I finished someone's commission, I guess they forgot to pay because they left the pm we were in - I already sent them the final product. After, I realized that they hadn't payed me, but I'm just too lazy and also don't really feel like chasing after them and yelling, "YOU FORGOT TO PAY ME!"

I don't have DA or PayPal yet, so I draw almost everything myself, but I think I'll never commission someone to do a ref sheet for me. I always want my refs to be completely how I like it, with my style etc. I want it to be totally mine. But idk, always when I request someone to draw a detailed oc for me, I'm always scared that they would miss some design aspects, if the oc doesn't have a ref sheet yet xD And always when I do art trades/requests, I ask a lot about the design if I'm unsure, because I don't want to miss something and make the requester disappointed. Maybe I'm like that because it kinda upsets me when someone get the design of my oc wrong, but I guess that mostly people don't care about details like that...? idk, maybe I should get rid of that habit XD

Lassie its always been scammers. They existed in everything before the internet and they will in everything after the internet. Take it from someone who works in a funiture shop that sells old funiture and holy ass have i found fakes amoung our wears. Luckily they have me who had arcitecture and art history in collage.

I'm an artist and I've not followed thru with commissions before, but that's why I don't ask for money up front *shrug* I have a hard time with mental health + I have a day job and school so I often get burnt out on art,, and I Know that so I don't wanna take money for something I haven't done yet. Just me tho I know deposits up front are important for folks who actually have this as their job
