However, my grandmother claims she herd a booming voice say "Call Jessie". My sister was a night nurse and asleep, my nephew was 6 months old asleep in his crib. Grandma woke her up. She left the house during sirens screaming 2 minutes before her house being removed from the face of the Earth. Both of her neighbors died. Believe what you will. "Jo. Things go wrong. You can't explain it, you can't predict it. Killing yourself wo'nt bring your dad back. I'm sorry that he died, but that was a long time ago. You gotta move on. Stop living in the past, and look at what you got right in front of you." "What are you saying?" "Me, Jo." Fun Fact: There are a total of eight tornadoes in the film. Casting Notes Fact: This movie reunites Helen Hunt with Bill Paxton who both appeared in Next Of Kin (1989). Music Enthusiast Fact: Jan de Bont is a Tori Amos fan and decided early on he wanted to include some of her music. Tori Amos filmed a music video inspired by The Wizard Of Oz (1939) in 1994. Sound Effects Fact: The unique siren sound made by Dorothy is achieved by combining the sounds created by a standard police, fire, ambulance siren control head. These control heads have modes called yelp, siren, and phaser. Cutting Room Floor Fact: Was shot as an R rated film that featured profanity and grislier wound details. The film was edited down to a PG-13 in post-production which caused additional scenes with Cary Elwes and Philip Seymour Hoffman to be left on the cutting room floor due to content alone. Exposition Dump Fact: Jami Gertz's role as Melissa Reeves doubles not only as a love interest for Paxton's character, but also as a vessel for exposition. With her character being the only one with no knowledge of tornados or meteorology exposition is "disguised" as her simply being curious while feeding the audience important information about the science behind tornados. Computer Enthusiast Fact: All of the computers in the movie are Silicon Graphics workstations. This is highly unlikely (albeit not impossible), especially for the main characters' unsponsored team, since the average price for a Silicon Graphics workstation was around $40,000 at the time. ($73,296 in 2022 money, adjusted for inflation). Furthermore, the Silicon Graphics laptop did not exist in reality. It was created specifically for the movie by Silicon Graphics as a prop, and was not actually a functioning computer. Needless to say, Silicon Graphics was a sponsor of this movie.

Always wanted to be a storm chaser. The closest I got was receiving a Storm Spotter number when I was living in Iowa. I got my certification alongside a friend of mine and, technically, we actually did go out chasing the storms. His family owns a lot of farmland and we would just be driving around keeping tabs on the locations when severe storms were rolling through. As fantastical as this movie seems, the visuals and sheer destruction are very accurate. I don't live in Iowa anymore, but I miss it just for the phenomenal weather.

2 time tornado survivor feeling obligated to give PSA: DO NOT, under any circumstances whatsoever, attempt to take shelter from a tornado under a bridge. Don't do what ANY character (s) in this movie do, for that matter, they should have all died in various nasty and unpleasant ways in the first 30 minutes and could have ended the movie early. Billy and Jo would not have been still strapped to that pipe when the thing passed. Okay maybe parts of them would still be attached, like an arm or something, but you'd have to go on a treasure hunt from hell to find them rest of them. It would not all be in the same place, either.

The scene with the aunt's town in shambles hits home to me. I grew up in a little town in Northern Illinois. About a decade ago i was living in San Diego and saw on the news about a major tornado that struck. Luckily for my family it did miss our town but it literally wiped out the small town about 5 miles away. Only 1 or 2 buildings were left standing, everything else was wiped out. I was freaking out for awhile because I couldn't get ahold of my parents. Quite a few friends or their families had to completely rebuild and start over.

Soon as the horizontal rain started, he told me to floor it. People clogged the areas under overpass. This mf tornado was 1/4 mile behind me and closing. I had that semi in top gear doing 123 mph on I44, black smoke pouring out stacks..and we made it. Let me tell you the tornado was loud, but not as loud as that Caterpillar 550 motor!
