As a gambling addict with 15 months sober, the issue here is that streamers don't show the reality of gambling and addiction that the average person will experience. Viewers don't see the financial devastation a gambling addiction causes. They don't see the lies constantly being spun to justify their behavior. They don't see the devastation inflicted on personal relationships. Gambling streams only show viewers that losing money is ok because eventually you'll hit something big. Your average teenager or young adult doesn't have the critical thinking skills to comprehend the concept of chasing loses which drives not just the addict but the entire industry. It normalizes this idea that playing slots for hours upon hours is the norm, and that if you lose quickly you just haven't spent enough yet to win. In short, the streams are normalizing and downplaying gambling addiction. The fact that online casinos are targeting streamers should raise a red flag as to their intentions. They're not targeting content creators on KZbin who have been posting gambling videos for years. They're not targeting creators with older audiences. They're specifically targeting creators with younger audiences and lower critical thinking to help normalize gambling to a new generation. I have seen a sharp increase over the past year of individuals who are as young as 13 seeking help and assistance for gambling addiction. Almost always, the main contributors of their gambling are online sportsbook and online casinos. This isn't simply an issue of adults making their own decisions, this is increasingly becoming teens and young adults being lured into this space. I am all for adults doing what they want to do. And I'm all for people having the right to gamble if they want. But personally, and in the gambling addiction community, the ease of online casinos and the nature of streams is abhorrent when younger audiences are targeted. Ultimately, a lot of young people WILL get hurt by this if sponsored streams are allowed to continue.

It's like drugs. Do your research, look into safety methods/health risks. Then proceed as you please. If you get fucked, it's on you. Especially if you didn't do the research.
@weeman2470
@weeman2470 2 жыл бұрын
@@GodofLovers that's not really an apt comparison though. Everyone knows drugs can be addictive, including young people; but when it comes to gambling it's not seen the same way. As a recovering addict, very few people have actually acknowledged that gambling is a proper addiction. A fair portion people (and I would assume a generous portion young people) don't associate gambling with addiction unless it's touched them personally. I would find it really hard to believe that younger viewers of these streams would actually look into gambling, the statistics, and addiction. Hell, if everyone did this the casinos would go broke. The whole point is that when online casino games are streamed by massively influential and well off individuals, it only serves to glamorize the act of gambling without the need to research the costs. All most of those viewers know is that you push a button, reels go whhrrhhh, and you either lose or win money.

@@weeman2470 I'd say generally people know gambling is addicting. If we're talking about kids, then their parents need to pay attention more, and let them know the reality of gambling. My mom would make sure to if I was watching a movie or something, with gambling, for example.

@@GodofLovers Seriously, past 14 years old, who listened their parents ? My sister just stop listening advices from everyone in the family at this age and made really bad live choices (even we were very supportive and let her make every big decisions). Fame is everything for them and i really cant blame XQc because without proper regulations by the autorities it will continue even it's not XQC who streams. It's like seeing drug dealers give some streamer free drugs to test on streams and let the kids watching where to find some... it would not be realistic ONLY because it's prohibited by law. Really it's not that different, gambling is a drug and people waste their life on it too.

I get it but to me it's just like winning the lottery since being a streamer requires a huge amount of luck to get the audience you need to be popular/profitable. And, just like lottery winners, most of them tend to lose a ton of it through theft, being taken advantage of, bad business/investments, reckless spending, etc. The truth is most people don't know how to handle having large amounts of money because most of us will never have that kind of money. So I can't really be mad or upset at stuff like this.

The scale of the world is ever increasing, such that doing a job that creates value locally is super unlikely to compete with a job that drains money directly from the global masses. Its like most people are crawfish in a gentle economic stream, but every once in a while you see these giant tsunamis roll through from huge oceans that aggregate all streams. Not saying this is good or bad or what to do about it, just that its whats happening. Personally I think gambling websites should be subject to paying extreme taxes or face consequences, just like successful streamers.

I disagree with Asmon when he talks about how doing the sponsorship when gambling is becoming normalized and thats why we shouldnt care, the problem is still there, these casinos do those deals with big stars and put ads for the purpose of becoming big and hopefuly people see it like a normal thing and stop complaining for the most part bc people will eventually get tired of doing so, gambling is one of the addictions with the highest suicide rates and that the biggest streamer is influencing his young fanbase that love him is very worrying for the platform.

Asmon tends to rationalize the morality of an action based off of how popular the action is at any point in time. He paints it as him being a realist but I tend to see him as being malleable and defeatist. He is very "If you can't beat them, join them". We see the same thing to how he crumbled into microtransactions with Lost Ark. Now he states if gambling is popular enough he would make his own gambling site, like wtf. Honestly it's one of the things I dislike most about him, he doesn't really have any viewpoints or pillars he stands by and tends to submit to whatever is popular in public opinion as long as he can benefit from it.

@@smccann1998 perhaps is because streamer values things in different standard than viewers. The danger is these streamers in particular are 'functioning' addicts because they can afford to gamble and lose millions and it doesnt impact them really financially. Ultimately however, there is potential that for whatever reason this bubble will burst, the gambling streams will be stopped and they will not be paid this money anymore. Will they keep gambling off stream, seems that way. Someone will eventually lose it all and there will be consequences. And thats just these big streamers who can 'afford' to gamble. I am sure there are a lot of kids, young adults and adults who watch the content, gamble, lose and regret it. Ultimately the content is damaging and harmful, and should be stopped. I agree, its a problem in wider society not just twitch. Gambling advertising in sport in the UK is a huge issue which needs to be dealt with, its just as damaging as smoking or alcohol which are banned from sponsoring teams in sport here. Ultimately it should be stopped on twitch.

“Showing kids isn’t the issue”, it’s the “people who are prone to addiction”. You big streamer personalities with your echo chambers need like the slightest bit of understanding about psychology and development of a child’s brain to realize that watching a person you look up to as a kid- Train, Ludwig, xQC, gamble away massive amounts of money leads to the development of addictive personality. Big voices like yours Asmon, need to be more responsible with spreading that information. We are damaging young people in their development and setting them up to be the only people that ludwig and Asmon empathize with- the addicts. It’s so backwards. Stop the problem at the root. Asmons takes in this video we’re hot garbage man. So disappointing to hear the justification of perteptuating this issue as basically “bad people are gunna suck so let me fall into all the traps they want”, “don’t blame the streamer because they are just making money and exploiting twitch”. Such selfish and individualist sentiment. It’s gross. Ludwig’s video is a cry for help for himself and his friends because the only people he can see this problem hurting are the people he interacts with, not the youth and impressionable young people that watch them. People gotta be a lot less prideful these days. And realize that participating in watching this stuff is hurting us as a whole down the line.

If that was true everyone would be a rapist and a murderer. Of course these thing are illegal, so it is not the same, I am just compairing the general idea. These sayings are attempts to put the blame away from themselves. This does not mean that the state is not responsible, or people are not responsible for themselves, but it also does not mean that the streamers are not rensponsible for their actions.

I know a guy who started death roll gambling in wow classic after being influenced by a "winning" streamer. During one month, every time I login (night or week) he was there, same place, gambling all his money, stuff and even his place on a raid. Few weeks later a common friend said to me that his girl kicked him from her home because he was already pretending during all this time going to work, buy gold with real money to gamble and finally spent 8k dollars a day on online gamblings... Online gamblings are the worst 'cause these people don't feel the wallet getting empty, everything is made to be compulsive and unreal. Gamblers are ill but those streamers/companies are the real desease

I have a feeling it's so popular because viewers want to see the streamer lose everything and have a stroke. Just like Nascar and violent crashes. The lottery is nothing but boring to kids. Their favorite streamer playing essentially a video game and having epic celebrations when winning is a totally different thing. That would snag my attention to start gambling if it were around when I was a kid. That's what people mean by marketing to kids.

Doesn't matter, that number was just tossed around to show how many people have actually tried it, some of them would probably get really addicted if they went deeper instead of just doing it one time. If 60% people are willing to try something that anyone can figure out, when i was a kid i never wanted to gamble in real casinos because of the odds always favoring the house. I gambled with my friends when i could scam them out of their money. Gambling can be really addictive, there was a link i think Train showed that his viewers lost millions of dollars from one of his links that he advertised, that was months or half a year ago, not really sure but by now they probably lost much more. He can't get paid so that gambling sites are losing money, if they are paying Train for example 4 million a month, they are making much more from his viewers.

One issue with saying it's very popular with gamblings streams is that you trust in Twitch view numbers. We have seen youtube, spotify, games (Lost Ark) all manipulating numbers with bots. If the casino earns so much money and being is such a lucrative business I would argue it's not hard to guess they buy views on streams either to make it seem more popular and acceptable than it is. For numbers to be trusted we need a verified user system... But that is a huge debate in itself.

I get Asmons point of view on this, I live in a town with a lot of Casino's and used to work in a convince store with scratch offs. By law payout and/or odds have to be posted, each scratch off has odds on the back and Casinos have to post payout for each category of machine. People don't care, I think at most Twitch should ban gambling and at least require that gambling streamers follow rules like Casino's have to. Casinos have to have gambling addiction hotline phone numbers posted everywhere and show odds and disclaimers on games. Also, to note most of the websites are probably hosted from some place where there are no regulations and so they don't have to post odds. Which is why I think the minimum is that Twitch should require the Sponsor and Streamer to show those odds. Native American Casinos are a big deal because they are not regulated at all, and why the stereotype exists that the games are rigged, as an example.

My father has always owned little casinos since I was a kid, I even worked in some of those during school for quite some time. Anway I really really gotta disagree with the point being made around 15:00 because while yes, these kids cannot buy lottery tickets or play in these online casinos themselves you have to understand that especially this type of gambling is about simple Pavlovian conditioning. Meaning the game shows a symbol or makes a sound and uses that to train a neurological response. That's why whenever someone gets a huge win in a casino and the slot machine plays a respective sound you will see EVERY head turn into that direction IMMEDIATELY. Like this is how badly addicts are conditioned by these games, and kids watching these games simply gain a much higher tedency towards addiction. Hell here in Germany (and I think lots of other places too) casinos have to cover their windows completely so you can't even look inside and generally kids are completely forbidden from even entering those establishments simply due to the fact of just how impressionable they are. Yes, most people are okay with gambling, my state even has it's own casinos due to "the people's need for gambling" but still.. this shit CANNOT fly without rules and regulations. We HAVE to offer numbers for addiction hotlines and contact data for help organisations, yet kids can get the rush of gambling online without consequences? Nuh uh. Those fucking online scammers are disgusting for running those ad campaigns, and the streamers and Twitch are even worse for indulging them.

I feel like Sykkuno was the only honest one among all popular streamers giving his opinion about this, because he was the only one that actually admitted to not wanting to touch the topic too much because the main culprits are his streamer friends. Everyone else just ignored or handwaved that fact despite being one of the main reasons why gambling streams are a thing, just to not be confrontational towards their streamer friends. The "Slots" category had almost 200K viewers, and over half of those were XQC alone - to say that the individual streamers are not worth being held accountable is disingenous at best. They say _"go complain to Twitch about it"._ Well, guess what: Twitch would see that the problem is literally like 3 guys and address *them* before addressing gambling streams as a whole since that is easier, the same way they did for the "copyright meta" which, by the way, XQC was once again part of them. Twitch did not change their copyright TOS, they simply banned the streamers causing issues. The same will happen here if gambling streams get out of hand and Twitch feels like they may be held legally liable for them: they will just start handing out bans, not changing their TOS for anything other than I guess removing the Slots category. As a rule of thumb, think of it this way: if a problem on Twitch can be over 95% removed by simply banning or moderating the streams of 3 top streamers or less, then it is not a Twitch problem, it is a _streamer_ problem and should be treated as such, so yes, people ARE right to call out individual streamers for this particular case the same way people did for purposeful copyright infringements back then, and it worked for that one, so I do not see why it would not work here as well.

I'm addicted to gambling online. Thankfully I've had the knowledge to force limiters on myself and my spending on the websites I use and I have a set amount that I can spend every month and no higher. I have myself blacklisted from over 40 gambling sites because I will just create a new account and put more in. Thankfully I saw the pattern early and put gates in place for myself so I cant go off the handle (online at least), but it IS A PROBLEM. I know im going to lose, I know its stupid, but I can't help it. I feel bad for a lot of people who get into it and lose everything because the "pull" of it while youre in that headspace and aren't able to get the support they need or have the capability or forcing restrictions upon themselves. One thing I am happy about though is trains gamba streams, it really gives me perspective of how bad the system really is, but also allows me to enjoy it with no risk, albeit with a much lower rush when he wins big compared to when you win big personally. Ultimately though I think online gamba should be 100% illegal worldwide, its TOO easy to put money in, TOO easy to do it at 3.15 am while your sleep deprived and not thinking. At least if you visit a casino or a gamba establishment you are grounded enough to have to have gotten yourself there, there's at least a barrier of entry being "you have to leave the house" I doubt anyone will read this but this is how I think and feel.

I had my share of slight gambling addiction in my younger days. We had slots in the bar I worked in and I would often sit down after work and on occasion gamble away what I've earned that day. In this environment I got to know quite a lot of people with gambling addictions, some more severe than others. One thing I can say from my experience is that for none of them, gambling has been a net positive in any way. Whoever gambles regularly is losing out, just by the nature of how it works. If you are addicted, your daily routine is revolving around that addiction. They would start loaning money, their relationships would suffer because they'd get into arguments with their partners, sometimes they wouldn't be able to pay their bills, their attention is going towards the slot machines, not the people around them. It is pretty rough to see someone go from throwing their first few bucks into a slot machine to becoming a fully fledged addict that sits in front of the machine every single day. Now, I'm holding myself acountable for whatever gambling I did in my past and I'm still doing today. And I think others should aswell. However, there is a reason why society as a whole sometimes intervenes and sets up rules and regulations in order to protect everyone. It's why we have traffic regulations for example. We cannot trust the individual to always do the right thing, so we come up with a set of rules for the greater good. Even though I think gambling shouldn't be prohibited altogether, normalizing it isn't the greatest idea in my opinion. We have bigger streamers gambling away thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars in a heartbeat, while viewers are cheering them on. They are showing a form of gambling that is completely detached from an average person's reality. They are not showing the consequences of losing their "hard earned money". So viewers, especially younger ones, are mostly seeing the entertainment factor, not the negative aspects. I'm not so sure if they can put things into perspective. Also, normalizing gambling has already shown to creep in to other forms of entertainment throughout the last decade, like gaming. The more accepting we are of gambling systems, the more we are going to get in our games. I for one don't really enjoy that every other game is fundamentally a gacha these days. At some point we went from gambling with our play time to gambling with our money. Why is that? Not because we asked for it, but because developers slowly but steadily tested the waters and implemented gambling into their games until it became normalized. And now we're in this situation where games aren't as good as they could be, because they have artificially created problems that you can buy the solution to. And here we all are saying: "It is what it is." I think normalizing gambling contributes to that. Over here in europe, governments have already started to regulate gambling to quite a large extent. Online casinos for example, have been made so god damn inconvenient and unfun that I don't even bother with them anymore. In germany, they did the same for on location slot machines. Some countries banned gambling altogether. I think in the grand scope of things, regulating gambling is a good thing, because it is not a sustainable form of entertainment, it's highly manipulative and the possible negative consqeuences are severe. For the same reason, I would like to see gambling in games being regulated aswell. I'd prefer to go back to knowing what my money can buy rather than taking an off chance to get something at all.` I think it is unhealthy for everyone involved in the long run. Just my two cents, take everything with a grain of salt. Cheers

First, gambling comes in many forms so a 60 percent stat includes so many forms, not just unregulated offshore casinos. Second, if you ask someone if they are okay with gambling, most, including I, would generally say yes. For example, gambling on a game of 2k with my buddies or buying a $2 regulated scratcher is different from completely unregulated online casinos operating out of safe-haven countries. I also do love that streamers have a seemingly self-serving opinion that streamers aren't at fault for encouraging gambling and receiving millions for doing it. Obviously, blame the platform as well but twitch isn't getting paid millions directly by these companies. There is no other industry where we would pretend that the parties getting paid millions to promote something aren't responsible for promoting it. Many actually receive percentage of losses, how are they not responsible in a moral sense?

Isn't playing the lottery considered gambling? Like gambling has always been popular in hundreds of not thousands of different ways in every country and culture. I enjoy watching poker streams but personally refuse to ever gamble because of my mental health, bad paranoia that "luck" is out to get me so I avoid putting myself in RNG scenarios.

I know asmond doesnt bother checking these posts, but he's actually wrong about people and morals. The reason you dont see people sticking to their morals is because thats entirely the point. The person who is not going to take those sponsor ships from gambling because of morals is the same person who is not going to brag about it either. You see people be hypocrites, you see people give up on their morals because those people are in the light doing so.

I've spent far too much money on Love Live games in the past. I used to be hard against microtransactions. I saw it as a waste of money, but I gave into it one time, got some good stuff, and next thing I knew I found myself starting to justify the purchases. "oh, its just $5. No biggie". But $5 after $5 after $5, it adds up. Soon enough, $35 didnt sound too bad. After all, that special pack gives so much more than the basic packs that are always available! That pack guarantees a great item and its a good deal! But eventually, after enough purchases of $100 worth of in game currency and not getting anything I want, those "small purchases" turned into waste after waste of my hard earned money. Those things i got didnt have any real value.. i maxxed out some of the cards i did want, , and found I couldnt even use them because they didnt outclass the things I already had at max level.. i started realizing just how pointless and wasteful it was. The lack of guarantees on the banners (aside from spending upward to $600 in a week just to buy the cards outright with pity crystals earned from failed rolls, which I had never sunk low enough to do), really dug the ditch for me. I stopped spending on those games. I had enough of the BS tactics to suck the money from my bank account, feeding off of my fear of missing out. I DO still spend on Genshin, at least enough to get one copy of the new characters every few months or so, if the free currency doesnt snag them for me, and I've been reeling in my purchases on the Konosuba game by limiting myself. But it definitely is dangerous how easy it is to just throw hundreds of dollars away at virtually nothing.. stuff that will be gone if someday the developers decide to pull the plug on the games. Some of which can be influenced by seeing someone do well on their own pulls, and hoping you too can be that lucky.

I live near vegas, I have had friends lose their houses growing up because their parents would spend their paychecks all away in the casinos. I've watch someone jump from the 12th floor at the Riverside Casino in Laughlin NV because he spent his entire life savings and lost it all that weekend. The Riverside ALSO lets their employee's take out half of their paychecks each day. Gamble on their breaks and just completely throw all of their daily "Drawl".. Gambling is absolutely disgusting. I'll put on a coupon for Football every week (basically a list of bets that all need to come through to pay out at a massive bonus). I'll put £2 on it (usually with a £250+ return if it comes through), it makes watching all the games better as im more invested in it. Thats it. I put £15 into the account a year ago and ive not put in any more money, im still playing with that initial £15 and just gambling the winnings, when I take money out I always leave some to gamble more with. Gambling doesn't need to be destructive, Im aware I'm a minority of gamblers though. Gambling is really normal in my country (UK), especially football + horses.

It's like saying it's better for kids to start smoking at an early age because they're eventually gonna be smokers when they're older. Also, comparing gambling to being forced into a religion is not even remotely the same. You can change your opinions on religion when you're older, you can't get the money you lost gambling.

One thing I want to say: I really respect and agree with the idea of Asmon that he wants to do streaming and his brand for the rest of his life, so selling out for a quick cash out that is going to send your name and brand into the dirt in a matter of a few years isn’t the play.
