You drew a very nice prallel between Tarja and Floor. To me personally, Tarja has much more powerful natural instrument. Knows how to utilise it, sings with passion and radiates certain elegance. Floor has a very good breath control. As for Kakko, he's awesome. I used to listen to Reckoning night on repeat, whe I was a teenager :))

Tony rocks... I love Sonata Arctica... i saw them live 2 times here in Buenos Aires...both times sold out venues... Btw ... I deeply love Tarja.... related to this video, she has so many Xmas albums 😃!... here I feel that she doesn't use his full "operatic" voice as other times I heard her....but she is absolutly amazing.... you should hear some of her Real opera singing. 🤘🏻

Hi Big Brain Singer! I really liked to listen tou your comments. I Follow Nightwish and Tarja Turunen since many years, and still love them both and I was fortunate to go to concerts from both in the Last years! From my perspective, this performances shows just a little of how Tarja keeps on experimenting with her voice throughout her career. In her first Nightwish years (first 3 albuns), she used mostly a classical vocal technique (as she is a professional Classical singer, specialized in Lied repertoire. Tarja herself said: an opera career would require full time, and she loves to experiment with other genres). However, Tarja slowly started to learn how to soften her naturally Big dark toned voice to adapt better to different musical structures or effects, being an early exemple of that: the song "Sleepwalker" to wich Tarja recorded 2 studio versions around the same time: one using her full classical technique (full power), and another version (which came out in the "Deep Silent Complete" CD singe) that was named - "Sleepwalker - heavy version" - on this version Tarja tried to fit within a more contemporary sound, and she would also re-record "Sleeping Sun" later with the exact same purpose. Century Child and Once albuns are already showing Tarja's vocal experimentations more (I would recall the song "The Siren" as a perfect exemple of that), but in her solo career, Tarja would go some steps further, develloping a stronger lower register, and starting to stwitch between a raw chest sound and a classical infused vocal technique for her Rock/Metal works, while at the same time perfecting her classical techniques for her Classical albuns and classical concerts (namely her albuns "Ave Maria en Plein Air" and "From Spirits and Ghosts"). My favourit Rock/Metal album by Tarja is her last one "In the Raw" which also shows her growing path as a composer. While I would say that - probably due to the intimate feeling or also rock feeling of many of the songs, on the Rakasta Joulua concerts, Tarja actually rarely used a full classical vocal placement on these concerts (If you compare the same Ave Maria she sung here with one of her Classical concerts' performances, you can easily tell she softened her voice a Lot for this), in other words she was using less than half of her vocal projection to make it a more emotional performance - also matching Tony Kakko with whom Tarja Loves to sing since many many years... (I also really like Sonata Arctica) =) I'll leave you 3 links for some essential Live performances by Tarja Turunen solo in recent years: 1st - A very energetic Live version of "Victim of Ritual" (song composed by Tarja)... the crowd really goes wild at this one - from Woodstock festival: kzbin.info/www/bejne/famnn5uYfLl9idU 2nd - An unbeliavable version of "Supremacy" (a Muse cover) Live at Hellfest festival - Very powerfull high notes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZ6wc3yVZb1mpac 3rd - As an amazing follow up this video, here it is "Stargazers" in a Live performance in which Tarja surpassed even hersef in the studio version from Nightwish's legendary "Oceanborn" album... its simply a Perfect and unmatched rendition: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHnPY5yYlrqpmbM (starting at 40.56min) Sorry If I wrote a lot, but I really appreciated your video. I also hope you enjoy these sugestions as much as I do! Cheers! \m/ \m/

@@CharlieCalottaReacts And it was the same with her first one (Let It Go) too. I'm wondering if she's doing the mixing part herself and doesn't want to "over emphasize" herself, she seems VERY humble and sometimes even shy. I feel like she's a person that doesn't want to take away all the glory from the others performing with her.

I have Tarja's "Ave Maria" album which she renders in a very traditional style. I enjoyed how here she held that style back, except for a few spots (which worked BTW), and made it a bit more contemporary. When you talk about Floor's voice, what's interesting that every now and again, she cracks open the opera toolbox, then just as quickly slams it shut. She does use a musical theatre/classical voice quite often, but rarely really tries to replicate a true operatic sound. I know that she has sung arias, but her sound doesn't quite get all the way there like Tarja. Yet every now and again we get this tease (e.g. the ending of Shoemaker) that says that the capability is there. One day I would love it if she really cut loose her opera chops. Another reactor with an operatic background remarked that opera only gives sopranos a high money note. She was impressed with the low power that Floor produced during the ending of "Shoemaker". She also puts this low, resonant power on display for a few short segments of "Pan". Another commentator remarked that she thought Floor to be a mezzo with a high extended range. Floor actually has a higher range than Tarja, but to my ears at least, her high opera sound is below that of Tarja. That said, I think she might have to drop into mezzo range to fully explore her operatic sound. Her lower tones are very rich and resonant. Listen to her sing the contralto role in "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" with Simone Simons. In theory this role should be way out of her comfort zone, but she manages it quite well. It was a lighter performance than a true contralto, yet impressive for a soprano to get that deep with a comfortable resonance and power. We can see that she is working a bit at the bottom end, nevertheless it's impressive to my ears. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJnXgIKIjrl6rpo I know this is liturgical and not opera, but it is a useful indicator. This analysis of course, could be full of shit. Curious to know what you think,

I always put Tarja as the mezzo when comparing her to Floor due to how much richer her voice is, particularly on the low end. But I'm not a vocal technician. You can really hear the difference and richness in Tarja's version of Nightwish - Nemo (End of an Era version) and in her cover of Muse's Supremacy (milan version has better audio quality imo). She also did a Led Zeppelin medley that shows off the richness in her voice.

@@kunou4527 The problem when we're trying to sort out Floor's approach to a song is that we can never assume she can't do something just because she didn't do what we expect. I agree that Tarja's voice has a richness to it, but Floor can do it as well, it's just a matter of us running across that song where she chooses to use that approach. Sometimes she only cracks open that technique for a few notes, but it's there. She has such a huge toolbox of vocal techniques, it's not a surprise that we only get to hear some techniques now and again. As a fan, it's a bit frustrating that we seldom get to hear her put any technique on display for a full song. It's always this tease - a bit here, a bit there. I guess that keeps us coming back for more. It works in my case.

Hi, I'm new on your channel. :) Can I recommend another artist version of "Ave Maria"? But not Schubert's "Ave Maria", but Caccini's "Ave Maria". Can you react this in Kokia's performance, live version from 2008? For me, and I expect to gather some, make that loads, of hate, but I can't deal with her phrasing. Almost as if she swallows parts of it.
@Rosannasfriend
@Rosannasfriend 3 жыл бұрын
that's not phrasing. Its pronunciation, her vowel modifications. People say she doesn't sing contemporary, but this is her way, with wide vowels(contemporary style) mixed in heavy classical vibrato, lowered larynx, and high operatic soft palate. Her palate lifted too high with the wide vowels gives sound that is "good" but not to everyone's taste. Whereas Floor bounces from one style to the next, Tarja tries to mix them simultaneously in a hybrid. My opinion. I think there are better ways to do it, but her voice is still gorgeous to me.
@kunou4527
@kunou4527 3 жыл бұрын
@@Rosannasfriend I always get enjoyment out of Tarja's phonology. She retains the Finnish vowels and even some consonants it seems, and it always comes off as a stylistic touch to me. Examples would be "three" in Nemo and "opera" in Phantom. I guess some people really don't like it.

In this song they both sing it very slow. Tony "swallows" parts of his wording, the stops and emotional style does it. Yet that doesn't bother you?
