Thanks for posting the finish!!! I have been following along, setting the project aside between videos. To trim the guards, I used a stainless strip as spacer/straightedge. Due my undisciplined hands I always make my cuts on the waste side of the straightedge.

Love your tutorials ❤️. Question... to avoid cutting pages at the end, could the album pages be bound with only one page already trimmed? I’m sure the answer is in part... « not without difficulty » lol. Thank you, Belle

I was going to ask the same question! I've actually made an album like that and the swell of the spine does make things a bit difficult.

When I was taught to make albums we sewed signatures with the pages already cut out. But in order to do anything, the book had to be "packed out" with scrap paper so we would have a solid block to trim on a guillotine and put into presses. The packing would move or fall out if the book was handled without extraordinary care. I developed this technique of guarding when we were binding and making constant deliveries of 10-15 albums for Ffolio 72 back in the 70's and 80's, those books were rounded and backed as well which would have been a real nightmare for one packed out album let alone dozens. Thanks for watching. Stay safe and get vaccinated.

the swell of the spine is why we round the spine, it puts all the threads into an arc and the book block becomes paralell as it should. Thanks for watching, stay safe and get vaccinated.

Hello. I just want to say that I watched the video called PERFECT BOUND BOOKING (if I'm not wrong) and I did it with a book I printed. It's amazing. Thank you very much.

Hi Sage! I love your videos and they have inspired a certain highschool senior to order some materials to bind a book or two. One of my projects I want to be a photo album for a good friend, and I was wondering, do you put any sort of corner holders for the photos on the pages? Or slits in the paper at an angle to slide the corners of the photos in? It would seem like doing so would make using the album more pleasurable, and also the photos would be removable. Thanks for your time and great videos! -Erica

Usually we mount photos directly to the page with archival adhesive film. I comes like tape in a gun and it's very good. My friends also write captions and names under the photos so removable is not really an option. However, if you do need to have that option, I'm sure you can find photo corners in crafts stores , or photo shops if they exist any more or maybe some scrap booking places. I think the modern trend with digital and scrap booking is to mount the photos permanently. Slits are not a good idea because the corners are visible and would be an obstacle to putting anything on that surface ( also, page movement may set the photos free...). Thanks for watching. Stay well and get your vaccination as soon as you can.

Thank you for the video, I want to make an album, too, and I have a few questions, 1/ What is the advantage of this technique compared to using bolts to join sheets of paper? (when using bolts, we don't need to cut off each second sheet of paper, as we can set small pieces between. And it will require paper scoring) 2/ Does the paper have texture? 3/ How many grams per square meter of paper? 4/ Do you think it useful to add tracing paper between pages? Thank you

1/ What is the advantage of this technique compared to using bolts to join sheets of paper? (when using bolts, we don't need to cut off each second sheet of paper, as we can set small pieces between. And it will require paper scoring) There is no scoring. the books as you can see will open flat. Bolts or screw posts require at least an inch of paper and the books will not open flat as well as having have a bulky, inflexible spine. 2/ Does the paper have texture? I am using Black Stonehenge, grain of the paper runs parallel to the spine. Texture is like a matte paper. I also have videos on making a photo album with white Stonehenge paper. 3/ How many grams per square meter of paper? 250 gsm 4/ Do you think it useful to add tracing paper between pages? Do not use tracing paper. I have a video for interleaving with glassine in my channel. Thank you for watching!

Great series! I've found these videos to be very informative. I have a question about pressing the book in the nipping press after casing in. I noticed that you had the whole book in between the boards in the press. I've been taught to never put the spine of the book under pressure after casing in (or at any point after you've glued, rounded and backed the spine). I've been taught to leave the spine just outside of the boards when you put the book in the press. I imagined that this was done to protect the spine and keep it's shape, but your albums look fine after pressing the spines in the nipping press. The spine of your albums also looks a lot more mobile than I'm used to seeing. Are there like differences on when you have to protect the spine and when it's fine to put pressure on it?

I hope that one day I'll be able to reach your skill level of putting books together. I'm curious about the pages you cut out. Will you use them for another project?

Those cut out sheets were divided and sent to a person who draws and watercolors on black paper. I saved some for myself on which to paint and use colored pencils, and some will go to a local art lab for kids to use. Thanks for watching. Stay safe and get vaccinated as soon as you can.
