This was an interesting day. There was a big swell running that evvvvvveryone was hyped about. A couple of waves in this area work on swells like this, but when I got there and checked them, they were maxed out or way too windy. Yet, there were a ton of lookyloos just sitting in the parking lots, waiting and frothing. I used my OCD Surfing Computer Brain and felt that even IF it cleaned up at some point, the angle was all wrong and that the waves would be kind of short and crowded at the more traditional spots. As you all know by now, Travis and I prefer to do our kooking ALONE.
So, I drove on to this little stretch of sand I watch constantly. It's beautiful, but it essentially never works. It's always super dreamy looking because it's more sheltered from the wind, and the setup is super pretty. However, that protection means that swell hardly ever gets in there, and when it does, it's just all closeouts. But with all the rain, I thought MAYBE something weird could have happened with the sand and made some of the saves rideable. And low and behold, when I checked it this day, there were some semi-decent little runners. I told Travis where to find me, and we managed to kook a few little runners by ourselves. It certainly wasn't great, but at least we were alone, and the wind didn't blow our face skin off.
We found out later that the wind finally did get better at the more famous spots with about an hour of light left. The verdict from a source I trust was that the only spots working were super crowded and a shadow of their best selves. So, we were stoked about how our little adventure paid off. A little extra gas money was worth it this day!
