Great system. The mistake that audiophiles often make is not simply enjoying their systems. The upgrade bug can become a never ending quest for perfect sound.

Its amazing from when you start to where you go. The sky is the limit. Im still tweaking my systems. Yes you heard that right systems. I have a few that i will never part with. And others that are getting well used. One setup is to go with the movies. The other side is for audio. Also learning how the system works with my house amd room. Magnavox seems to follow me the most. I do have a marantz 2230 i got free. Needs alot of tlc. Including the recapping. To each their own and its part of the journey. 😊

What?? True audiophiles don't pursue "perfect sound" because that's not a thing. What is your system?
@Cakebattered Жыл бұрын
People who get lost in the upgrade cycle do so because they either can't afford their dream system or can't fit their dream system into their lifestyle. It is a hobby, and if it were just about the music, they would cease to be an audiophile, and just a music lover.

First time watching your channel. I'm 65 years old now and I've been a collector of vinyl, then when they went out of fashion, collected CD's, then when they fell out of fashion, progressed to storing my entire library of music as flac files on external hard drives. I understand the nostalgic appeal to vinyl, but can't see myself ever going back. The clicks and pops drove me nuts! I have gone strictly electronic and glad I did. Still enjoy music produced from my youth and my parents era, and the quality is outstanding over my current rig. Sometimes you have to go through a few hardware pieces to get the synergy right, but once you do, the emotional connection can be revisited time and again. Listening to music is what brings me great joy and helps to transport me to better times and experiences long past.
@MelindaMurphy Жыл бұрын
I understand what you mean about the clicks and pops. One thing I was careful of when starting my collection was avoiding scratched records when possible. The Dire Straits record was a very early purchase and unfortunately it's pretty noisy. At the same time, the music is gorgeous. I think it's great to have so many choices now. We can listen to great music however we want. ♥️ Thank you and take care.

First time watching the channel too. I am about your age also. My wife wanted a record player. So last Christmas I got her a turntable and we started collecting vinyl. By now we have about 30 of them. The initial novelty wore off and now we listen to Spotify a lot. I too have an extensive CD collection. I have a friend in Boston who listens to records only. His set up is very basic. I think my receiver costs more than his entire set up (record player, amplifier and two bookshelf speakers) I think it is about enjoying music not so much the tech. I got sucked into the upgrade game too but had to stop at some point due to cost. I am totally happy with my system. I have had musician friends comment on how good my system sounds. The records are so expensive these days. the 30 or so records we have purchased so far, far exceed the cost of the basic record player and the Schiit Mani 2 pre amp I bought for better sound.

So happy for you that your system is complete. I own a pair of Klipsch Forte speakers from the mid 80's that deliver that "goosebump"-inducing sound you describe. I'm also very happy with my Pro-ject turntable and Ortofon 2m Bronze cartridge, connected to a Macintosh Phono preamp. I use a Yamaha receiver and would like to upgrade that piece of the puzzle! But I do get great quality sound as it is. It's exciting when you finally achieve that 'perfect' sound that you and you alone can truly appreciate! I recently replaced all the speakers in my car stereo and I agree with you that the intro to 'Eye In The Sky' is one of my favorite pieces of music to listen to -especially when it plays on Sirius XM in the car. Melinda, I'm so proud of you and your husband. He supports your endeavors, and one of the things that I love is that you are doing this at your pace without pressure. This is how it should be done. As you upgrade, it is almost a never-ending cycle, but I have always done it at my pace like you have. My last upgrade was a Hana ML moving coil cartridge, which was the icing on the cake and made my hard work worth it. As you move up, you hear more of what the artist intended, and it brings you more into the music and the emotional impact and the expression that you will now feel will sometimes bring you to tears, if the music puts you into a space if a loved one who is no longer hear, like a parent, relative or very good friend. I bought my cartridge from Music Direct. The bad thing Melinda is, you will be out shopping for better pressing of albums that you own for the reasons that you mentioned. That cartridge was my missing link, and yes, I get goose bumps and envelope in the music like never before. I just upgraded my phono stage last year.

We were in a vintage shop and found the record bin, I explained what she was missing out on by not being analog, so now she's just gotten one of the Dayton HTA100's for her birthday connected via wire and some of my old HT speakers, and she's enjoying it but already thinking about a new turntable. I'm a multi channel guy but once we get her a little more dialed in I'm going to get my own 2ch rig happening. It's fun to share the tech side with her while our whole gang can enjoy the music. And Kudos to you for going with Andrew Jones and REGA (appreciated, a I too am a Brit, living in Germany). I sold my soul to Linn Products back in the 1980’s so all my equipment now is from Linn: LP12 turntable (not quite the top of range but not far off), Linn Streamer / Pre-amp, Linn power amps and Keltik speakers, and more Linn gear in the Home Theater room. I just bought 3 Deep Purple records last week to add to my 5-600 or so collection, but since my stroke 4 years ago I cant handle them so easily, so I mostly stream through the Klimax DSM streamer and iPhone App. I’ll subscribe and follow your journey. Nice upgrade and great journey! I never understood how people can invest sooo much into their vinyl collection and hardly anything into a sub standard audio system that doesn't even give them all the sonic benefits of vinyl. You don't have to spend a lot, just make smart choices, audition gear, know your preferences and your room and placement. What a great story on your journey, when gear speaks to you, you know! Two recommendations I would say to you, upgrade the sub next to a REL, Rythmik or HSU. I like my REL at how well it blends for music. The other is, look at a tube preamp for your phono. That's some next level air, dimensionality, warmth and the benefit of changing out just the tubes to get a different sound. Thanks for sharing, dig the videos and honesty! Take care as well.

Hey Melinda, Love your videos, your presentation & all is just great! I Wish my spouse supported me & My Hobby like your spouse does. Yes, now that you have a high end system you have come to the realization that with greater fidelity, comes the amplification of all the snap, crackles & pops! When I Got into this a few years ago as well, my journey was similar to yours, I was not as particular in the condition of the vinyl, but as my system improved, I hated hearing all the artifacts that where not supposed to be there, so I became very persnickety when buying vinyl. I always wonder what the record store employee thinks of that weird guy inspecting all the vinyl when shopping. LOL! I work to hard for my money to buy crappy vinyl! I Do not know about your experience, however, I Have found that at least 25% of the new vinyl that I buy has some kind of defect & I Send it back for a replacement, & there have been times it has taken a couple replacements to get a good one. Very disappointed in some of the manufacturers these days. Anyway, Enjoy that new system, It will serve you well for many years. I do look forward to the day when technology allows us to virtually visit other peoples music rooms, that will be so cool. as for me, I am content with my Vintage gear; 1- Fully restored Kenwood KR9600, Empire Troubadour 596 MKII TT & Technics SL1600 TT, Teac 3300S R2R, Klipsch Forte II's & Klipsch KG4's restored with Crites Cross overs & Titanium tweeters. SPIN ON!

I like the sound of your vintage gear. Some quality stereo equipment. I was a very picky album buyer in the 1970's, having returned many albums back to the Record Store due to warpage or excessive noise. I'm still that way, but it's paid off through the years, as I can still listen to those same albums from the 70's and they still sound great! Even though I partied with them, I was the only one who handled the records, so that helped with their longevity. One thing though, when it comes to listening to music in general, I don't have a problem with noisy old 78rpms from the 20's, 30's, 40's etc. I grew up listening to noisy music, scratchy 45's, barely audible AM Radio stations playing noisy music, etc. Nobody paid much mind to how records were handled back then. I doubt young people today could listen to it, being they have what I call "sanitized ears".
@raywoods2132 Жыл бұрын
I totally get it Gerold, I remember listening to my parents 45's & Such in the 60's with all the Snap, Crackle & Pop, & That I think began my musical journey. Although I never really was exposed to the 78's, except when my aunt who had a antique victrola would play some of those, & hey, that was High Tech back in the day so it was totally acceptable, sort of like AM radio Still, LOL! God Bless! @@geraldtanderson9044

Hello Melinda, you just got another fan, from the Netherlands. 2023 November 1 . I started buying vinyl in the sixties. THE KINKS album was my first. Still have it. MONO of course. Some years later I became a West Coast fan. Jefferson Airplane, Quick Silver Messenger Service, Janis Joplin, The Byrds, Moby Grape, Grateful Dead etc etc. And I still have them all. Although in my seventies now I still enjoy listening to my old heroes. True love never dies. And a good equipment helps a lot.

I'm so happy for your upgrades on buying new stereo equipment and that you are happy with the great sound quality with the upgrades. As for me, I still have my vintage 2 channel stereo equipment. Yes, over the years I have had my stereo equipment serviced a small number of times. I'm still very happy with all of my vintage stereo equipment. I'm old school and 61 years old, as I'm going to be 62 this year in November. I still love playing my records on my Realistic Lab 420 Turntable, as it plays records flawlessly. Land sakes I was a Freshman in high school when my uncle bought the Turntable for me, as he bought all of my stereo equipment for me. As a teenager I didn't have the money to buy the stereo equipment that I have. My stereo equipment, is from the early 1970s to 1983. As I stated, I have had my stereo equipment serviced a small number of times over the years, but I wouldn't trade any of my stereo equipment for newer equipment. When I play my Genesis The Way We Walk Live Volumes 1 and 2 records, I relive the memories of going to the old Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, PA to see Genesis in concert. I had front row seats at the show. This Genesis tour was the band's The Way We Walk Tour 1992--1993. Genesis Is my favorite band, and I was listening to the band when I was in grade school, which of course is during the Peter Gabriel Era. I was also listening to The Beatles and Yes when I was in grade school. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment and my vintage 2 Channel stereo equipment, is in my living room. My tv set is in my bedroom, with my Pioneer home theater system. I have big DVD collection and I watch my DVD movies on my Pioneer home theater system. My Pioneer AV receiver, is a complete package, with both front and rear surround speakers, subwoofer, and center channel speaker for the dialog. I'll admit, I do have a newer Turntable in my bedroom, that's hooked up to my Pioneer AV receiver. I have an Audio Technica ATLP60X Turntable. It's a fully automatic Turntable, just like my Realistic Lab 420 Turntable. Though, my vintage Realistic Turntable is a direct drive model, as my Audio Technica Turntable, a is belt drive model. Both Turntables have mm cartridges. My vintage Realistic Lab 420 Turntable, has the original Shure mm cartridge, which is the cartridge that came from the factory with the Turntable. I was able to buy on ebay, the EXACT Shure mm cartridge for my vintage Realistic Lab 420 Turntable. There was a seller on ebay, that has replacement cartridges and parts for vintage Realistic stereo equipment. So, I have 2 original Shure mm cartridges for my Realistic vintage Turntable. The original cartridge ALONE retailed for $80 dollars when the Realistic Lab 420 Turntable hit Radio Shack's store shelves in the 1970s. So, yes the Turntable is over 40 years old, and going strong. I take excellent care of my vintage stereo equipment. Take care, Alan.

It is so great to listen to your audio journey, not everyone has that same appreciation for audio and the gear. I have finally assembled a system I am completely happy with, as of yet my main deficiency is the lack of vinyl. I mostly play digital sources, my PC, and CD's. I had my record collection stolen from my parent's home when I was overseas in the USMC, was a bitter pill to swallow, I had been collecting since I was about 9 years old. My first LPs were Uriah Heap's Demons And Wizards and Iron Butterfly's In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. I hope sometime this year to get a new turntable and start buying records again. I have a lot of nostalgia associated with playing vinyl records, some of my fondest early memories of music. I played on my parents' console stereo, I plugged in a pair of Koss Pro4AAA into the jack in the back and listened to music while they watched Heehaw.

Vinyl is also very nostalgic for me. I spent a lot of time listening to records as a little girl. I'm so sorry your records were stolen. That Iron Butterfly record is wonderful. ♥️ Thank you for the kind words. 🤗 Take care.

I grew up with the same Motorola console stereo as a kid in the early 70s. That thing was so loud and boomy! And it has 16/78 speeds too, but like 10 grams of tracking force - a vinyl killer. Then in early 80s, graduated to my brother's hand-me -down Pioneer SX-650 and BIC 960 turntable. Thanks for sharing this. I hope you kept the Motorola!

Wonderful video again, Melinda! My journey started about 6 years ago when I took part of a Christmas bonus and recapped my first stereo system - a 1976 Fisher all in one I received for Christmas when I was young. (Yes, it has an 8-track player, and I still have it). I played an LP of "cowboy" music my grandfather gave to me when I was six. ("Cool Water" by the Melachrino Strings). Their version of "Ghost Riders in the Sky" is still my favorite rendition and my number one track for testing a turn table or cartridge. I was immediately hooked on vinyl and stereo! Overtime, I have upgraded my system. The most recent addition is a Marantz TT-15S1 turn table playing through a vintage Denon PRA-1200/Marantz MM7025 amp. I know FLAC and DSD are much higher fidelity, but I want the warmth and the ritual of vinyl LPs. Also, these LPs keep me tied to my grandfather and my late dad through their LPs I now have. The next upgrade will be the speakers. Enjoy your journey!

I've experienced everything you say in regards to hearing music in a very clear, new and exciting way. That experience came way back in 1978, with my new Phase Linear Sound equipment and Advent Loudspeakers. The sound was incredible! My 65 year old friend at the time, who was well versed in musical equipment and had a keen ear for sound (being an organist), said he had never heard anything like it. The speakers are encased in walnut cabinets, so I know what you're saying about a warm feel to them and looking like a fine piece of furniture. By the way, the system still works perfectly to this day and still sounds great. Purchasing quality stereo equipment is the best investment anyone who loves listening to music could ever do.

Great story of your journey. I also started with a Zenith Console my Grandmother gave to me when I was 13. It’s sounded excellent. My new journey started 25 years later in 2004 I picked up a pair of working Magnepan speakers for $50 but didn’t have a receiver or turntable. Since then I’ve had many iterations and ended up with a Sherwood HP 2000 integrated amp, Thorens TD 160 turntable and JBL L100’s that I built myself (Cabinet, crossovers, and all reconed original drivers) pulled from and rescued from the previous abusive owner. Started rebuilding my record collection in 2015. At about 100 plus currently

One I recommend is Linda Ronstadt - Get Closer, especially these songs: The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and Easy For You to Say. I current use a vintage Yamaha system from 1983: The A-1000 integrated amp, P-700 mm Shure P-mount cartridge--nothing special, but with the capacitance loading selector everything integrates beautifully... no hiss or any detectable background noise from this cartridge, amp or pre-amp section. This was back when Yamaha equipment was only sold in dealerships like you'd go to buy a car.. and boy was it expensive. I've enjoyed listening to your experiences going through the all the start up equipment, including the console. I'll never forget putting on my brand new copy of Alice Cooper's Billion Dollar Baby - Hello, Hurray on my dad's---rarely used Magnavox Television, Stereo console. It was before solid state took off.. it used a tube amp, horn loaded towed slightly inward behind the grills---I used a flashlight to try and see what was behind there.. 12" woofers behind the side grills.. man did it sound good cranked. My high school days my system started with a complete but semi component Winthrop stereo with decent power, radio, 8-track tape, but did come with a separated BSR turntable with moving magnet cartridge, speaker I still have were especially nice and modern in style-- still to this day very handsome in appearence--all cone drivers, 8" woofer, 5" midrange (sealed back), 3" tweeter (also sealed back) with a segmented diffraction horn at the top panel---which was open because it was really the bass reflect port.. love the design even so. Later I upgraded to a Marantz 2220b receiver and bought Electro Voice SP12C woofers, 8HD diffraction horns with 1823 compression drivers and Electro Voice T-35 compression tweeters--same tweeters used in the original Klipsch legacy series. I bought a sheet of white birch indoor grade plywood and used the EV spec sheet that came with the SP12Cs and designed a semi-open baffle corner cabinet that fit and attached to the corner by the top corner point.. I used foam weather stripping on the tops sides that fit into the corner.. there was no back but the top formed a triangle with the front two sides being chamfered edges upon which the length from top to bottom formed a solid strip with the extreme side edges being the recommended port size divided in in half so each edge didn't touch the walls but had a strip forming on each side as the wave guide. Since there was carpet, the bottoms sealed to the floor simply by standing there. I the only attachment to the room was a block screwed into the corner at the height of the speaker cabinet minus the top wood thickness.. only a single nail pin dropped through the top of the cabinet and into the block pulling the top of the cabinet tightly into the corner.. with the weather stripping the top of the cabinet was held tightly enough to seal the baffle to the corner and forming the speaker cabinet. Anytime I needed to clean the room, vaccum the carpet I'd just slide the top pin out and the entire thing was moveable for temporary cleaning.I didn't use any insulation due to the thick pike carpet at the bottom floor. as for the 8HD midrange horns.. i used the mounting L bracket as a stand sitting on top.. so I could tow in or out the horns at any angle.. at first I used Motorola Piezo tweeters mounted to each end of the 8HDs with a fashioned bracket i had a friend cut out of sheet metal. later I added the EV T-35s and used them instead. The place where I bought the speaker components designed the crossovers.. they consisted of inductor coils--taylored to the speaker components--also capactors and an adjustable wire resistor.. the crossover components were glued to a wood block which was screw mounted indide underneath the cabinet top. I got the corner idea from Klipsch but of course the open baffle was my idea to save money and get things goind quickly.. I got several interested people wanting the plans.. and they built there own version. I didn't have grill cloth over the front woofer..just a precission cut hole about midway from the top and floor--rear mounted. I was using the Marantz 2220b receiver--only 20 rms per channel, but boy 1 watt would overwhelm the room quickly.. and the stereo imaging was crazy. Crisp bell like sounds, voices there in the room---close your eyes and you could literally see Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham standing there front of stage.. because of the horns they sounded like one of the Klipsch legacy speakers.. and all from a lower-line Marantz receiver. I still have all the components but I sold the baffle cabinets to a friend. I'm thinking of buying another sheet of plywood and repeated the system setup for a spare bedroom. In the early 80s I bought the Yamaha A-1000, K-1000 dbx cassette deck, and P-700 turntable. and the speakers I used with that system were two-way bookshelf speakers using Audix drivers--made in France if I'm not mistaken--cabinets were midsize and built locally and sold by the Yamaha dealer in town so they were engineered to spec and sounded amazing.. I later added Yamaha's first Natural Sound subwoofer-- I don't remember the model but I bought in 1984 and still works great as well. Well this is a bit too much information no doubt but I figured since you were and are quite the enthusiast I would share.

Greetings Melinda, I have been watching your channel off and on for a long time (years) and I have to say, at first I watched just because we had similar music tastes. As I have watched your understanding of good sound change, I have to say, I am impressed. When I first started watching your channel, you never mentioned gear or had your system in any of your shots. I have been seriously into audio (as many of your viewers have been) for 40 years. I take my audio setup as serious as my music, but that's just not a main stream thing anymore and that's fine. In fact, the two interests are mutually exclusive but I have great respect for people that value great sound as well as great music. When you upgraded the turntable to the P8, added the outboard phono pre, then the SourcePoint 10 speakers and the REL sub - OK, this lady knows her stuff. Your equipment is closely matched, which is a sign of a wise audio enthusiast. $50,000 speakers just dont have the same impact with a $400 amplifier. You have probably also figured out, its a bottomless pit; trying to find your "perfect sound". Get what your comfortable affording, match the equipment, place the speakers correctly - then enjoy the heck out of it. I wanted to say, it adds a huge amount of interest for me when I watch your LP reviews. "This album sounds great" has to mean something, especially when you're reviewing one step pressings. I really value vinyl channels that let me know when pressings dont go that well, and do it in a respectful manor. When I am paying between $25 to $150 per release, I expect a lot. Its nice when the person who has reviewed a pressing has listened to it critically on a good system. I love it! Your great, and in my opinion your channel has gone from just OK, to great. Your now becoming a resource for me and not just another vinyl channel. Lord knows, there's no shortage of those. PS - Huge Emotiva fan ... I have owned a bunch of their equipment through the years - great company. I also love it when you husband is on ... he's a great guy for supporting you!

Love bass and imaging try Spatial Audio Open baffle speakers. Once you hear them there is no going back to a Box speaker, Electrostatics' but on steroids. Sound is live in your room. I grew up on Vinyl then in 1992 I heard a CD player that changed my bias against the CD format, 2,300 CD's I am still enjoying and still buy them, again, I grew up on vinyl, BS that CD sounds bad, they sound like a live mic feed. Now streaming music, now that lacks big time. You're right a system should be about enjoying the songs you play.

All of my stereo equipment is vintage. 70's pioneer in the living room and in my music room all 70's Marantz equipment with Klipsch floor speakers with Realistic bookshelf speakers. Thank you Melinda, its appreciated your hard work on research of equipment and music. Great journey.

I love vintage gear but when something goes wrong, I don't have the talent to do repairs. Lol. I admire vintage gear but I'm probably better off with the modern gear. I feel like the Sourcepoint 10 speakers give me a retro vibe while giving me wonderful sound. Thank you and take care.

Great system. And there are few things in life as wonderful as having a great stereo in your home. These new components would be a wonderful excuse to expand one's horizons and start listening to jazz and classical.

Yes!!! I agree. I have a pretty nice jazz collection and I have been buying a few classical records here and there. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️

I love your videos and am a vinyl/music enthusiast. I have a mildest system but really enjoy spinning records. I buy from the In Groove and on a visit to Az, visited his store. I live in rural Alaska albeit on the road system in Seward, Ak. (Chilly at 15 degrees here today). I have a surround system with a Onkyo Rz 50 and a Emotiva XPA with a project turntable and a moving coil cart through a mobile fidelity phono preamp. I have a KLH Kendall’s in the front, Polk center, KEF atmos spkrs, and PBS imagine rears, also a Sony blue ray , SACD disc player and stream through Apple TV. I have small room and DIRAC really helps through ONKYO. Back in the day I had a suitcase record player while in Army and then a Kenwood/Technics system. hard to duplicate the sound of that old system but I would say room had a lot to do with it. Have a list of upgrade ideas but at retirement ((75) have to curtail impulses. Keep posting , look forward to watching your videos - have You Tube premium - love it. Thank You

I only had small goose bumps until I upgraded my speakers to the Gold Reference Tannoy Dual Concentric. Now my goose bumps are enormous every time I listen to them.

Enjoy your new system! Trying to reproduce sounds is a fun hobby. I have enjoyed collecting systems that do just that including transistor radios.

I purchased an AR -XB turntable over 40 years ago. Over the years I've had to replace the head shell and the belt and of course I upgraded the cartridge/stylus. It's still going strong.(knock on wood)

I fell in love with music as a young teenager and I became addicted to vinyl at an early age. Things really became more encompassing when high-quality cassette decks came out because it allowed me to master my vinyl via mix tapes. I am now 69 and I still love music and recently had a JVC DD-7 cassette deck refurbished and I can now get back into that hobby again because so much music did NOT make the transition to digital and it's NOT on KZbin!

Nice upgrades! I just got my music room setup, after listening to my records in the family room for years. I have a VPI Scout w/Ortofon Quintet Blue cartridge, Vincent PHO-701 phonostage, Emotiva PT1 processor, 2 Emotiva BasX AS1 monoblocks, and Emotiva T1+ speakers. I love it and am enjoying my music more than ever!

What a brilliant incisive video ,from some one who understands . Yes music is emotiona an experience , that I can only get from vinyl . Yes you get what you can afford and enjoy and tresure it along with your Vinyl collection. When my Turntable died , I stored my vinyl for 20 years the last 3 years I replaced my old turn tablewith two new turntanles , for my two systems. My second system I have built is a valve one. Through hard experience I now have a professional record cleaning system. My Secondary system was tested with the ultimate J S BACH . Lionel Rogg 20 vinyl Lp`s EMI 1976 and the second new york dolls album, details, depth I never heard before . 50th rega edition A& R a60 1979 UK amp, now they are ARCAM, a classic Amp to Buy. That is a fabulous system. Those speakers really interest me, Andrew Jones knows his onions. I've owned a Rega Dac-R since 2013 & I rate it highly.
